PJ Sin Suela Makes History on NPR's Tiny Desk by Incorporating a Sign Language Interpreter

Yahoo18-05-2025

Sin Suela lit up NPR's Tiny Desk Concert with a historic and dynamic performance, becoming the first artist to incorporate a sign language interpreter as part of the performance that premiered on Thursday (May 1).
Clad in vibrant orange — a color aligning with his most recent album, Toda Época Tiene Su Encanto, which dropped September 2024 — the Puerto Rican wordsmith and his 12-member troupe brought a genre-bending set to the stage.

The 24-minute performance opened with the love rap 'Tengo Una Nota' and and the bilingual 'Duolingo.' The artist showcased his versatility with 'Mírame,' delivered in a spoken-word, conscious-rap style that highlighted his lyrical depth and storytelling ability. A blend of funk, rap and hip-hop defined the set's eclectic sound, punctuated by a laid-back yet pulsating performance of 'Amor Artificial' and the high-energy 'Top.' He closed with the emotional anti-war song 'Mambrú.'
'This is a dream come true for me,' said PJ Sin Suela in a press release. 'I remember being in college playing Tiny Desk sessions and thinking, 'One day I'll be there,' and it happened. To this day, if I'm cooking or having friends over, we put on a Tiny Desk. I have a deep respect and love for the platform, and I treated it that way. We prepared, rehearsed and gave it our all. I was able to bring my favorite musicians from Puerto Rico and people I admire and love dearly. I was able to represent what I do visually, musically, and socially.'
Accompanying PJ was a powerhouse ensemble of Puerto Rican musicians, including Jahaziel García on trumpet, Benson Pagán Jiménez on guitar, Gabo Lugo on percussion and Barba Blanca on piano. Alexssa Hernández made Tiny Desk history as the series' first sign language interpreter. Backing vocalists Verónica Rolón Acevedo and Yeidimar Ramos Colón added soulful harmonies to the show.
PJ Sin Suela also used his Tiny Desk debut as a platform for activism, placing stickers on the set that read 'Puerto Rico is NOT for sale.' The message — which he carried as a sign during the 2022 Puerto Rican Day Parade — reflects his opposition to policies such as Act 22, which allows wealthy foreigners to exploit the island's resources.

Find out who owned this gramophone on display at city museum

THIS gramophone is featured in the recently-opened Your Worcester exhibition at Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum. It is an example of the beautiful HMV 157 (His Master's Voice), manufactured between 1927 and 1939, made of oak with a wind-up turntable. Its large swan neck tone-arm picks up information from the record via the needle and amplifies it through the horn-like soundbox in the body. But this gramophone has a much greater association with music than simply being able to play records. More: Meet the woman who creates dazzling window displays in city More: Pictures: All the business award winners from two counties More: Celebrating the 60th anniversary of Worcester theatre It was once owned by Sir Edward Elgar and given as a gift to the family that inspired one of his greatest works. The Pomp and Circumstance Marches are quite possibly his most recognisable works, well known as the melody for Land of Hope and Glory and used to evoke patriotism and national pride. The Enigma Variations led to his international fame. These incredible pieces captured the raw emotions he felt towards friends and places. They demonstrate Elgar's great gift of encapsulating human feelings in music. Enigma Variation VIII is dedicated to Winifred Norbury, of Worcester Philharmonic Society, and was inspired by both her and the beautiful house in which she lived with her sister Florence. It was to Florence Norbury that Elgar gifted this gramophone and some of his records in 1931. In 1942 the gramophone was re-gifted by Sir Edward's daughter Carice Elgar and ultimately donated to the Worcestershire County collection with supporting letters. It remains an incredible link to the composer but also to friends and places he forever immortalised in music. See Elgar's gramophone at Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum. Your Worcester is free to visit, open from 10am-4pm, Tuesday-Saturday, and 10am-3pm on Sunday. It is closed on Mondays and bank holidays.
