10 Songs That Celebrate the Sound of Philadelphia

Over the weekend, I made a solemn vow to the football gods: If the Eagles won the Super Bowl, then the next Amplifier playlist would be made up entirely of songs by artists from Philadelphia. The football gods upheld their end of this bargain — in case you haven't heard, the Eagles absolutely trounced the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs, 40-22 — so today I will uphold mine with 10 tracks from the City of Brotherly Love (and the brotherly shove).
Across all sorts of genres, Philadelphia has a rich musical history and a vibrant musical present. The sound of Philadelphia soul defined the early 1970s (even David Bowie wanted a piece of the action), and its heirs adapted its influence into a neo-soul boom that took off in the late 1990s. Philly has long had a thriving underground music scene, too, as evidenced by its tight-knit indie-rock community and its reputation for eclectic, innovative hip-hop.
This playlist is certainly not meant to be definitive. Since I limited myself to just 10 tracks, I tried to avoid the obvious, which is to say you will hear neither 'Motownphilly' nor the 'Fresh Prince of Bel-Air' theme song. Today's playlist does, however, feature some familiar local luminaries (Patti LaBelle, the Roots) alongside some younger artists (Jazmine Sullivan, Tierra Whack, Alex G) who are updating the sounds of the city for a new generation.
I restrained myself from including the Eagles Victory Song, though, so I suppose you will be able to enjoy this playlist even if you are not a fan of the new N.F.L. champs. It definitely hits different if you're wearing your Kelly green, though. So fix yourself a cheese steak (wit or witout), pour yourself a tall glass of wooder and press play.

While no one would compare the two players from a success perspective, general manager Jason Licht did speak out with a comparison between the two quarterbacks. Read more: Vikings' JJ McCarthy Just Got a Head-Turning 2025 Prediction During a conversation with Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, Licht revealed how Mayfield's decision to sign with the team was similar to Brady's. "Some of the same ways that Tom [Brady] chose us, Baker chose us too, because he knew that Tom chose us because it was the best place for him to win a Super Bowl, Baker chose us because it's the best place for him to revive his career," Licht said. "There wasn't agendas, and he was going to be able to just play football and try to win. So that was big for him, and he's obviously helped, big part in winning, but those players love playing with him, especially receivers. Who knows if Mike [Evans] would have chose to come here, who knows if Chris [Godwin] would have signed back, they love that guy. It's because they want somebody that's going to help them on the field too. So I hope Baker's here a long time." Last season, Mayfield played in all 17 games for the Buccaneers. He completed 71.4 percent of his pass attempts for 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. Mayfield also ran for 378 yards and three more scores. Back in 2023 in his first season in Tampa Bay, he threw for 4,044 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions while completing 64.3 percent of his passes. Needless to say, the marriage between Mayfield and the Buccaneers has gone well. Mayfield leading the Buccaneers to a championship would equal the championship Brady brought to town. Only time will tell, but the team has a new star quarterback leading the way and Mayfield deserves a lot of recognition and praise for what he's done through two years with Tampa Bay. Countless big names have popped up, including Brady. The longtime New England Patriots QB came out to a pro-wrestling-style entrance, igniting the crowd with his antics. While making his way down the ramp, patrons began tossing Brady an assortment of NFL jerseys. Among those given to him was Manning's Giants jersey. Brady quickly sent the crowd into a frenzy when he ripped it in half. The pandemonium did not end there, as Manning ended up storming out for revenge. He snuck up on Brady and jumped on his back at the bottom of the ramp. The two then made their way back behind the curtain together while enjoying a good laugh. Manning would once again best Brady, leading New York to a 21-17 win. In retirement, both Manning and Brady have hung around the game as TV analysts. The former is most known for his "Manning Cast" alongside his brother and Indianapolis Colts legend Peyton.
