Scottish town with unique attractions named country's top spot for family travel
Falkirk has been named Scotland's top family destination in a new LNER study of 71 UK towns and cities
Falkirk has been named the best place to visit in Scotland for families, topping a new league table compiled by rail operator LNER. The central belt town clinched the top spot based on its unbeatable offering of kid-friendly activities, green spaces and family-focused accommodation.
The research, which examined 71 towns and cities across Scotland and England, analysed destinations across five categories: family-friendliness, sustainability, culture, outdoor experiences and food.
Each location was scored out of 100, with data drawn from sources such as the Office for National Statistics, Yelp, and Hotels.com. All figures were adjusted for population and weighted to ensure a fair comparison.
Falkirk outshone other Scottish destinations for families thanks to an impressive 511 kid-friendly activities, more per capita than anywhere else in the country.
The town is also home to 11 public parks and themed attractions, giving it one of the highest concentrations of green space designed with families in mind.
Accommodation options scored highly too, with Falkirk boasting 159 family-friendly hotels per 100,000 people, the top result in Scotland.
Dining out is also made easier, with a wide selection of child-friendly restaurants available for visiting families.
David Flesher, Commercial Director at LNER, said: 'When you're choosing where to go, it's not always easy to know what a city is really best at, especially if you're trying to plan something special. This research helps take out the guesswork and shows what different places have to offer.
'We hope this guide helps people make more informed choices, whether they're planning a day trip or a longer summer break. There are so many brilliant destinations on our route, and this is just one more way to celebrate them.'
The study also spotlighted standout destinations in other travel categories across Scotland. Aberdeen was recognised as the country's most sustainable destination.
The coastal city earned praise for its clean air, ranking lowest for air pollution, and a high number of second-hand shops per capita. It also boasts walkable streets and a compact layout ideal for low-impact tourism.
Stirling, meanwhile, was hailed as Scotland's cultural gem.

Nature lovers were pointed toward Inverness, which was named Scotland's best outdoor destination. Nestled between the Highlands and the famous Loch Ness, the city offers hiking, wildlife spotting, and even dolphin sightings in the nearby Moray Firth.
And when it comes to food, it was no surprise that Edinburgh topped the charts.
The capital was praised for its vibrant culinary scene, including the highest number of Michelin-starred restaurants in Scotland and recognition from the Good Food Guide as the 'Most Exciting Food Destination of 2025'.

But the Oban star still delivered mostly-strong work before the thrilling finale which has secured another positive step forward in the race for the FedEx Cup play-offs and, more crucially, the The Ryder Cup team. MacIntyre's Oakmont display rocketed him to fourth place in the European List and he cemented that excellent effort by banking more valuable points in Cromwell. Staring the week, the Tartan ace was one place behind Shane Lowry and one ahead of Sepp Straka in the List heading into the tournament and finished well ahead of both the Irishman and the Austrian in the closing positions at the Travelers to make more key ground. The 28-year-old went into the 28th and final competitive round of his gruelling seven-successive week spell on the two-under par mark and exchanged shots with the course to stay on that number through 14 holes of his final effort before the flying late flurry. MacIntyre first jumped forward with a chip-in eagle three on his 15th, the par-five sixth on the course as he started from 10th tee due to weather delays and restructured tee-times, to lift his position and backed it up immediately with a long-birdie putt at the next to stretch to five-under par. Following a par on his penultimate hole, MacIntyre concluded with another birdie at his last hole to cap the week and the lengthy spell of events in perfect fashion. The Scot's work has seen him take in the Truist Championship, PGA Championship, Charles Schwab Challenge, Memorial, RBC Canadian Open and US Open before this Travalers and MacIntyre will now return home for a short break before the defence of his Genesis Scottish Open title and The Open Championship at Royal Portrush the following week. Former Ryder Cup star David Howell is convinced the Scot can have a strong run in Northern Ireland having come sixth at the course in 2019 in his debut Open. He said: 'Yes [Scottie] Scheffler is going to be the favourite for that Championship, of course. But he is made for links golf, Bob MacIntyre. And he has proved to himself last week that he can win a Major because, when he had the chance, he did everything right. So he'll have his own expectations to deal with, but surely we'll have a good performance from him.' MacIntyre made it clear in the immediate aftermath of Oakmont that he isn't shying away from the Major challenge and admitted it has handed additional belief as he said: 'There's no reason why I can't win a major championship in my career and that's my goal now. I said I wanted to win the Scottish Open and I got that. I just want to win Majors now.'

It comes following the experiences of Taylor's fans, who grappled with transport difficulties last June when the international singer dazzled crowds over three nights at the venue during her Era's Tour. Now, as the countdown to the Oasis gigs on August 8, 9 and 12 continues, fans of the band have been issued advice, as reported by the Daily Record. It includes them having been dissuaded from using Haymarket station – advice shared on a Reddit thread entitled: "People of Glasgow that are going to Oasis in Edinburgh, how are we getting home?'' The user sparked discussion about how people that live outside of Edinburgh are planning to get home. The post read: "As per title, are people chancing being able to get a train home? A coach? A million pound taxi? I'm really not sure of the best plan of action..." One Swiftie from Glasgow suggested: "Tip from when I was at Taylor Swift last year. Everyone will be trying to get a train from Haymarket, and it'll be f***ing mobbed." Advising instead: "Head to Waverly (either via tram or just walk) and get on the train there, it'll be significantly quieter, and you'll likely get a table seat as well, rather than being stuck standing." There's also been advice from someone who attended Robbie Williams' gig in Edinburgh, where he kicked off his BRIT POP world tour at the end of last month.
