KTMB services disrupted by cable thefts yet again
The Northern Komuter and Electric Train Service (ETS) were delayed due to the cable thefts.
PETALING JAYA : Cable theft involving the signalling and communication systems on three Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad's (KTMB) northern routes today caused disruption and train delays of more than 60 minutes for both the Northern Komuter and Electric Train Service (ETS).
The affected locations were the Tapah Road-Sungkai (Km250.5) route with 200 metres of cable stolen, Kamunting-Bukit Merah-Bagan Serai (Km87.25) route with 110 metres stolen, and Simpang Ampat-Bukit Mertajam (Km15.5) route with 40 metres affected, Bernama reported.
Trains were delayed by 80 to 115 minutes.
The services affected were EP9172 (KL Sentral- Butterworth), EG9321 (Butterworth-Segamat), EX9107 (Butterworth-KL Sentral), EX9207 (Padang Besar-KL Sentral), and EG9420 (Segamat-Padang Besar).
In addition, the Northern KTM Komuter service on the Ipoh-Butterworth-Ipoh route was delayed by 30 minutes.
KTMB said early notifications of the disruptions were sent to passengers via SMS and KTMB's official social media platforms.
KTMB chief operating officer Zain Mat Taha said 45 cases of cable theft have been recorded in the northern sector from January to May this year.
KTMB has announced a plan to upgrade its signalling network at a cost of RM12.8 million annually over the next three years, with a focus on hotspot areas.
They plan to install manhole covers with special locking mechanisms at 21 locations, introduce CCTV cameras and drones, and have anti-climb security fencing.
KTMB auxiliary police, with the help of police, will intensify patrols in hotspot areas to curb theft.
KTMB incurred losses of RM1.28 million last year and RM162,000 as of March this year from these cable thefts.

PETALING JAYA : A consumer body has said it would no longer work with Ikhlas, a society for small-time entrepreneurs, after learning it had been deregistered three years ago. The Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) said it had no idea that Ikhlas had been deregistered when jointly presenting a memorandum to the home ministry recently, according to the Scoop website. 'We do not want the public to question our credibility for joining forces with an NGO that has been deregistered,' PPIM chief activist Nadzim Johan was quoted as saying. 'Nor do we want to work with illegal NGOs. There are other NGOs whom we could work with.' On Friday, the Registrar of Societies confirmed that Ikhlas was deregistered in November 2022 for failing to submit annual financial statements. The society, which had listed former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad as its patron, was led by Ridzuan Abdullah, who is also on the secretariat of Gabungan Ikhlas Malaysia, a group which issued statements in early January on the addendum linked to Najib Razak. Ridzuan recently claimed that the NGO did not receive any notice about its deregistration, and also stated that the Covid-19 pandemic made it difficult for Ikhlas to hold meetings and submit its financial statements. Two years ago, it was reported that Ridzuan had been charged with 12 counts of filing fraudulent claims totalling RM378,000 to the Social Security Organisation to obtain incentives from the Penjana Kerjaya 2.0 Programme.

Man pleads not guilty to sexually assaulting 10-year-old boy

(File pic) KOTA BHARU : An unemployed man pleaded not guilty in the sessions court here today to a charge of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old boy. Che Asmizan Che Jaafar, 34, is charged with committing the offence in an empty container near the Lembah Sireh bus station here at 8am on June 12. The charge is framed under Section 14 (d) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 which provides for a prison sentence not exceeding 20 years and whipping, if convicted. Deputy public prosecutor Kamarul Hasyime Rosli appeared for the prosecution while the accused was unrepresented. Judge Zulkifli Abdullah set July 21 for mention and appointment of a lawyer.

Melaka Tengah police chief Christopher Patit said the duo, aged 24 and 31, were arrested in Kuala Kurau, Perak, on June 4. 'On May 28, police received two reports involving a housebreaking and robbery in the Melaka Tengah district linked to the couple, who are both unemployed. 'Their modus operandi included targeting homestays and stealing various electrical appliances and furniture from the premises,' he said in a statement today. Initial investigations found that they were involved in three housebreaking and robbery cases in Melaka Tengah, and four more in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Various items, including electrical appliances, household furniture, a gold bracelet, two cars, five pawnshop receipts, and five mobile phones were seized. He said investigations are ongoing, and the case is being investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code for housebreaking and Section 392 of the Penal Code for robbery. In a separate development, he said a clothing dealer was arrested for allegedly firing a shot with an air pistol at Jalan Johor, Semabok, on June 8. 'Following intelligence gathering and public tip-off, the 35-year-old suspect was arrested in Puchong, Selangor, on June 17. Police also seized a black bag, a silver-black air pistol bearing the inscription Pietro Beretta Gardone V.T., a speed loader, and 30 ball-bearing bullets. The suspect has been remanded for seven days until June 23 to assist in the investigation under Section 33 of the Arms Act 1960 and Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief. The case is still under investigation, and he urged the public not to speculate, as it could interfere with the ongoing probe.
