Nintendo Switch 2 launches today - should you invest in the world's leading video game brands?
Gaming fans queued up outside tech stores worldwide on Thursday morning, in a bid to get their hands on the latest big launch in the gaming world.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is the successor to the original Switch - the third best selling games console in history, and its launch is the first of a major console since 2020.
Nintendo's original Switch console has sold 152million units. The firm is no doubt hoping its new offering can surpass this original figure.
The gaming industry is bigger than ever before and is expected to reach $236.9billion in 2025, according to Midia Research. By 2031, the sector could be worth $280.1billion as gaming firms continue to grow.
Nintendo has seen its share price rise by 32 per cent in the past year. Over the past five years, the firm is up 151 per cent.
This growth is largely reflected across the board, according to figures from Etoro, with gaming stocks far outpacing the US' S&P 500 index.
A gaming stocks basket compiled by Etoro show the eight leading gaming firms have grown at four times the rate of the S&P 500, up 46 per cent over the past year compared with 12 per cent for the index.
Over the past five years, these gaming stocks have risen 141 per cent, compared to 101 per cent for the S&P 500.
Over the same period, the FTSE 100 and Nasdaq increased by five per cent and 13 per cent respectively.
Lale Akoner, global market analyst at Etoro, said: 'Gaming stocks' outsized returns in 2025 aren't just a function of cyclical tailwinds from blockbuster launches like GTA VI or the upcoming Switch 2.
'What we're witnessing is a structural revaluation of the sector. The shift to digital distribution and live‑service models has turned what used to be hit‑driven publishers into recurring‑revenue machines.'
Akoner added that an increase in recurring revenue models have helped to stabilise growth and is 'enabling publishers to generate predictable cash flows while reducing dependence on hit releases.'
On top of this, he says, gaming continues to become more mainstream, 'with smartphone penetration, 5G connectivity, and the rise of online gaming making games more accessible and social.'
How have the leading gaming brands performed?
Brand Returns 1 year Returns 3 years Returns 5 years
Nintendo 32% 97% 151%
Sony 42% 59% 171%
Capcom 52% 132% 338%
Electronic Arts 17% 16% 26%
Take-Two 57% 105% 69%
Roblox 151% 158% 17%
Ubisoft -52% -78% -85%
Konami 69% 116% 438%
Source: Etoro
Etoro's basket is made up of Nintendo, Sony, Capcom, Electronic Arts, Take-Two Interactive, Roblox, Ubisoft and Konami.
While Call of Duty maker Ubisoft has fallen some 85 per cent over the past five years, and 52 per cent in the past year, this downturn is massively outweighed by the gains seen by other firms.
Japanese firm Konami, which produces the Metal Gear titles alongside Pro Evolution Soccer, has surged some 438 per cent over the past five years, including growth of 69 per cent in the past year.
Meanwhile, fellow Japanese producer Capcom, know for Street Fighter and Resident Evil, has risen 338 per cent in the past five years and 52 per cent in the past 12 months.
Akoner said: 'The standout performers, such as Capcom and Konami, have surged by pairing monetisation maturity with strategic global expansion and operational discipline.
'Capcom, for example, now derives 70 per cent of its revenue from legacy titles, a reflection of how back-catalogue monetization and digital distribution (78% digital share) have buffered the company from new-release volatility.
'Unlike some US counterparts, these firms avoided over-hiring and aggressive cost expansion, instead optimizing for long-term, scalable growth that aligns with gaming's shift toward predictable, tech-like revenue models.'
Playstation producer Sony has risen 171 per cent since 2020, while Roblox has grown 151 per cent over 12 months.
The latter has more than 85million daily active users, equivalent to Germany's entire population playing the game each day.
Gaming firms are also increasingly expanding beyond just video games themselves, most recently with the Minecraft movie and the second season of HBO's The Last of Us.
Akoner said: 'These franchises are breaking out of the console box – from cinematic releases and mobile spin‑offs to entire theme‑park attractions – creating multiple monetisation lanes that cushion earnings volatility.
'Japanese publishers in particular have paired this monetisation maturity with cost discipline and steady hiring, avoiding the over‑expansion that is now forcing many US peers to retrench.
'As a result, investors are beginning to view gaming less as a speculative bet on the next big hit and more as a durable, long‑term growth story.'

This is how much it costs to get the Lauren Sanchez look
She's a one-time astronaut, trained pilot, entrepreneur, mother of three, and former television presenter, and 55-year-old Lauren Sánchez is set to make (more) headlines next week when she becomes the second Mrs Bezos. Fresh off her glamorous, no-expenses-spared hen do in Paris, where she and attendees – including Kris Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry and Eva Longoria – stayed at the glitzy Hôtel Cheval Blanc, Sánchez is getting ready to tie the knot to Bezos, the third richest man in the world, in Venice. But who is the woman behind the headlines? Born and raised in Albuquerque New Mexico, she was a key member of the cheerleading squad, former beauty pageant queen and innately glamorous, kind and confident – according to those who knew her in her youth. Old photos showcase (typically 1980s) voluminous, flicked hair, a honed but curvaceous physique and killer tan, not to mention a rather bewitching glare. However, it was during her 20-year career as a TV presenter and news reporter – where gigs included So You Think You Can Dance and Good Day LA – when her beauty aesthetic really evolved from small-town beauty to glamazon. Renowned for her fierce Fox news presenter glam (think glossy blow dries, heavily-shadowed eyes and a dazzling smile) she is a symbol of a very specific American look, where visits to one's aesthetic doctor – whether for laser treatment or injectables – are non-negotiable. Her look has certainly changed over the years, with rumours swirling over various treatments she may or may not have had done since the early Noughties. It is any bride's prerogative to indulge in all her favourite treatments in the lead up to the big day, so here we take a look at those Sánchez seems to like. The tan: £250 'If Lauren Sánchez is wearing a spray tan in recent photos, it's been executed to perfection,' says James Harknett, tanner to the stars, including Daisy Edgar-Jones, Kylie Minogue and Demi Moore, adding that it is expertly colour matched. 'High-profile clients expect a bespoke tan that looks like their skin, but richer. I carry more than 30 different formulas to tailor the result, but Three Warriors do one that is flattering on most skin tones.' Many well known faces have someone come to their home, the price for which is between £150 and £250. The tweakments: £1,050 Just like many of the experts consulted for this story, Dr Sophie Shotter – who is known for her natural-looking tweakments – notes that Sánchez's face looks structurally different from 10 years ago. 'Now she looks more fierce,' she says, adding that this might be as a result of surgery or injectables, like dermal filler – which costs about £650 for a syringe with Dr Shotter – in her cheeks and lips. 'She's clearly looking after her skin and I suspect she's had smatterings of muscle-relaxing injections, such as Botox [costing about £400], too – she looks really fresh,' adds Dr Shotter. The teeth: £26,000 Sánchez has an eye-catching set of pearly whites – uniform and symmetrical, dentist Dr Sam Jethwa of Bespoke Smile says it's relatively uncommon to see teeth quite so perfect without cosmetic enhancement. 'Her teeth have a glossy finish which suggests she may have veneers – these are thin porcelain shells that are placed over the front of natural teeth,' he explains. 'They can enhance the shade of the smile, create balance and facial harmony and correct imperfections such as chips, cracks, and uneven edges.' Veneers with Dr Jethwa will set you back around £1,350 to £1,630 per tooth. The nails: £700 She prefers to keep things neutral on her nails – chunky French manicures and pearlescent nudes. Tom Bachik, who also regularly works with Selena Gomez and Jennifer Lopez, is her go-to manicurist; the pair have worked together on a number of nail looks, with one of the most notable being a 'pink glass slipper mani' for the 2024 Met Gala. Feminine and elegant, the look evoked 'sheer iridescent glass' while drawing attention to two rather show-stopping diamonds on her fingers. While an appointment with a technician like Bachik is hard to put a price on, the most luxurious manicures in the UK can reach £700. The workout: £120 In a 2023 interview with Vogue, Sánchez revealed that she works out with the newly-muscled Bezos, calling him a 'monster in the gym'. She has shared videos of her own workouts – often with trainer Wes Okerson, who is a Hyrox athlete (competing in running and functional training workouts – not for the faint-hearted) and personal trainer. The pair do a lot of resistance training (including Nordic hamstring curls and dumbbell squat presses) to build muscle, which isn't just essential for a lean, strong physique, but good health too. £120 is the going rate for a luxury personal training session in London. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lauren Sanchez (@laurenwsanchez) The hair: £870 Favouring long, swishy brunette lengths, Sánchez turns to hair pro Pete Burkill for her cut and colour. With clients including Anna Kendrick, Millie Bobby Brown and Sánchez's friend Natasha Poonawalla, Burkill recently took her raven lengths to a more sun-kissed shade, with stealthily-placed highlights and balayage. An age-old colourist hack to bring luminosity to the skin and frame key facial features, Sánchez's new look is perfect for summer – and, of course, for getting wed. A full head balayage and tint with Burkill at Josh Wood Salon (where he works part time) costs £575, while a cut and blow dry is £295. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lauren Sanchez (@laurenwsanchez) The cosmetic work: £24,000 Experts agree that Sánchez appears to have had facial and breast cosmetic surgery. 'When comparing earlier and more recent images, there are features suggestive of facial rejuvenation procedures,' says the cosmetic surgeon Patrick Mallucci. 'Her facial structure would suggest she's had a mid-face lift with brow lifting and rhinoplasty.' One of her close friends, Kris Jenner, 69, recently paid an estimated £100,000 for a facelift, and while the jury is out on whether Sánchez has had one too, prices for a mid-face lift in the UK can reach £15,000. Famed for his natural approach to breast augmentation, Mallucci also notes that she's had breast surgery, opting for a 'fuller, more obvious look, with round-shaped implants'. While today patients tend to opt for a more natural aesthetic, with smaller or teardrop-shaped implants, the full cleavage look is more popular in the US. In London, breast augmentation typically ranges from £8,000 to £9,000, however for a surgeon with extensive experience and a highly specialised approach, like Mr Mallucci, fees are considerably higher. The make-up: £843 Turning to Buster Knight – whose clients also include Jenner and Paris Hilton – for her glam, Sánchez favours flawless skin, a nude lip and defined eyes. You'll often find her sporting a diffused feline flick and set of ultra fluttery lashes, whether at the Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda show last year or Cannes Film Festival. Knight has credited the Dr Sebagh Rose de Vie skincare range (the serum is £132) and Dr Vali's Cutis micro-contouring tool (£625) to 'get red carpet snatched' before make-up application, while her base make-up often comes courtesy of Armani Beauty's Luminous Silk Foundation (£47) and Concealer (£39). View this post on Instagram A post shared by Buster Knight🧿 (@busterknight) The other beauty treatments: £955 With a killer set of brows, it's likely that Sánchez gets her brows threaded regularly (costing £95 a session with Anu Khapung at The Dorchester). She is also a fan of lash extensions, £360 for an hour with Edy London, preferring a feathery, full effect – faux lashes are individually applied to natural hairs to create a semi-permanent look, no mascara needed. And then there are facials; with her even-toned complexion and fresh appearance, Sánchez is likely to have them regularly. Whether sculpting face massage, microneedling or LED light therapy, the UK's top London facialists combine a multitude of different modalities, for prices that can reach more than £500 for an hour appointment.
