Golf fans witnessed history on Sunday as Scottie Scheffler decimated the CJ Cup Byron Nelson field. The World No. 1 went wire-to-wire for his 14th career victory on the PGA Tour, passing Jordan Spieth on the all-time list.
But it was how he dominated that turned heads. Scheffler tied the 72-hole PGA Tour scoring record of 253, previously set by Justin Thomas and Ludvig Aberg.
He finished the tournament at 31-under, eight shots ahead of the closest golfer, Erik van Rooyen.
Scheffler's immediate reaction on the course was that of emotion. He choked back tears during an on-course interview with CBS' Amanda Balionis.

"When I think about this tournament, I think about a lot of different stuff," Scheffler said.
"I grew up coming to watch it. This was my first start on the PGA Tour when I was in high school. The girl I was dating at the time is now my wife. We have one son. My sister was caddying for me at the time. She was here today. She has two kids.
Winning his hometown CJ Cup Byron Nelson is special for Scottie Scheffler, especially with his family there to celebrate: "I think at times it all comes crashing down to me at once." pic.twitter.com/IoQ9l5wqsA — Golfweek (@golfweek) May 4, 2025
"My family was all able to be here, and it was just really, really special memories, and I think at times it all comes crashing down to me at once."
Scheffler then put things into a broader perspective on its importance.
"I never really got this far to be honest with you. I always just dreamed of playing golf on the PGA Tour. I would come out on the driving range and watch these guys practice, hitting their brand-new range balls.
"That's all I wanted to do was come out here and play a golf course that was in great shape and compete on the best golf courses in the world against the best players."
Though he was born in Ridgewood, New Jersey, Scheffler and his family moved to Dallas, Texas when he was six years old. He grew up there and went to Highland Park High School in Dallas.
The CJ Cup Bryon Nelson (previously Byron Nelson Classic) is held annually at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas. That is about 30 miles outside of Dallas.
So Sunday's win was truly a homecoming for the world's best golfer.
Scheffler will now take next week's Truist Championship off to prepare for the season's second major, the PGA Championship.

The final round of the Travelers Championship is underway with a stacked leaderboard, including Tommy Fleetwood in contention seeking his first PGA Tour win. One notable player who fired a blistering 6-under-par round on Saturday, catapulting up the leaderboard near the top 10 going into Sunday, has sadly withdrawn shortly after the start of the final round. Hovland started the day in 14th place, 10 strokes behind leader Tommy Fleetwood, and was paired with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. Spieth withdrew citing neck pain during the opening round, making it the first time in his career he withdrew from competition. Si Woo Kim withdrew on Friday with a back injury, and Eric Cole withdrew before the start of Sunday's play, citing illness. Following his stellar 2022-2023 season, during which he racked up three PGA tour wins, including the Memorial Tournament, BMW Championship and TOUR Championship, Hovland struggled with some swing changes in 2024 before bouncing back in 2025. Advertisement Hovland just came off his best finish at a U.S. Open, finishing solo third at Oakmont Country Club last week, when he dazzled with his short game around Oakmont's tricky greens. He has seven career PGA Tour wins including two top 10s and one win in 2025 at the Valspar Championship. Hovland sits 20th on the FedExCup points list. Hovland will have another shot at a major championship next month, when he is slated to tee it up at The Open Championship taking place at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland from July 17-20.
