Aralam named butterfly sanctuary, rat snake proposal put on hold
Kochi: The state wildlife board, chaired by the chief minister, has on Wednesday approved the renaming of Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary as Aralam Butterfly Sanctuary, recognizing it as Kerala's first butterfly sanctuary.
The board, However, deferred a decision on declaring the Indian rat snake (Ptyas mucosa), locally known as Chera, as the official state reptile. Some members opined that more detailed research is necessary before making such a designation.
The renaming of Aralam Sanctuary honours its role as a major destination during the annual mass migration of butterflies, particularly the Albatross species, which arrive in large numbers.
Experts attribute this phenomenon to the sanctuary's unique climate and the presence of host plants. Situated in the valley of the Brahmagiri mountain ranges, Aralam benefits from mineral-rich water flowing from the hills, which collects along the riverbanks.
These minerals are vital for butterflies before breeding. "We have recorded 5,000 to 12,000 butterflies passing a single point in just five minutes," said a forest department official.

"More studies are needed on their migration routes and whether they return."
Several other proposals were also discussed at the meeting. The board agreed to approach the Union govt to provide legal heirs an additional opportunity to declare wildlife trophies that remained undisclosed following the death of certified owners.
A proposal will be submitted for the construction of a ropeway to transport goods from Pamba to the Sabarimala shrine. Approval was also granted for 21 quarries and several integrated production units located outside but within 10km of various wildlife sanctuaries and eco-sensitive zones across Kerala.
As part of ongoing tribal development efforts, the board decided to recommend five community centres and five roads within the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary under the Forest Rights Act.

Urgent need seen for integrating Indian Knowledge Systems in today's education
There is an urgent need to integrate the Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) into the current education system, Ashok Rao, retired professor from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) said in Dharwad on Thursday. 'We should all realise its importance and efforts should be made to give it due prominence,' Prof. Rao said. He was delivering a special lecture on Indian Knowledge Systems as part of an eight-day refresher programme titled Perspective and Sensitivity of the New National Education Policy, organised by the Malaviya Mission Teachers Training Centre at Karnatak University. Prof. Rao emphasised that the Indian education system has traditionally held its own unique significance. He explained that globally, there are five major knowledge systems—Western, Arabic, Indian, and Indigenous knowledge systems—among which the Western Knowledge System has had a dominant influence on India's current educational structure. He noted that the Western model has greatly impacted the economic, social, and industrial sectors across the world, including India. 'However, we must now focus on understanding and strengthening Indian Knowledge Systems,' he said. Highlighting the pluralistic and multicultural dimensions of Indian education, Prof. Rao said the importance of transmitting the Indian Knowledge Systems to the current generation through well-structured educational institutions. He called for reforms in both the curriculum and institutional-focused education models to better reflect Indian values. Indian Knowledge Systems is deeply rooted in culture, ethics, religion, diversity, wellness, traditions, and heritage. However, currently, there is a shortage of qualified teachers to effectively impart this knowledge. Prof. Rao said that Gautam Buddha deserves credit for introducing the concept of meditation from India to the world.

A direction to the public health engineering department was given to ensure sanitation and availability of pure drinking water through tankers, hand pumps and other means. The officials concerned were also asked to ensure availability of hygienic food and check the rates of the products sold at the shops en route. The health department officials were asked to ensure round-the-clock services, besides the police were instructed to regulate the movement of heavy and big commercial vehicles en route to Sultanganj and on the trek routes to Deoghar. Directives were given to put a layer of fine sand on the trek route, of which nearly 100 kilometres fall in Banka district, for the convenience of the barefoot devotees. Instructions were also given to the officials to cover drains en route and marking them with yellow paint, provide ambulances at Namami Gangey and Siri ghats at Sultanganj, earmark 'panda chowki' and register pandas (pastors), and make parking arrangements. After collecting the holy water of the Ganga at Sultanganj, where the river becomes 'uttarvahini' (flow turning towards north), the devotees trek barefoot nearly 105 kilometres, carrying kanwars on their shoulders, while chanting 'bolo bam'. On reaching Deoghar, the devotees pay obeisance to Lord Shiva by pouring the holy water on the Shivalinga — one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in the country — and seek blessings.
