Backing Ed Sheeran 'just playing with a friend' says Essex band
A folk band who backed Ed Sheeran at a surprise gig said they were "just playing music with a friend in the pub".Fishclaw backed the star as he played some of his greatest hits during an hour-long performance in Ipswich on Sunday.They played at short notice and did just one sound check about five minutes before playing with Sheeran at The Thomas Wolsey in Ipswich town centre.Rory Hobbs, who plays guitar and mandolin in the band, said: "It was a bit of a risk for him, given that we hadn't practised at all beforehand... but the faith he had in us was quite something."
Mr Hobbs, who has been friends with Sheeran for many years, said the Shape of You star messaged him ahead of the gig to ask if he could play with them."It was just playing music with a friend in the pub. He is a very sound, solid, normal guy," he said."Ed was good at bringing the best out of people and the crowd."It was nice playing in a local venue. It was spontaneous."
'Heart of music'
Colchester-based Fishclaw have been together for the past 12 years. Alongside Mr Hobbs, Shari Statcher plays Irish whistles, Charlie Charlton plays bass and Simon Keep plays piano accordion and keys, while Pete Rowley is on drums and Jos Dow on fiddle.Mr Hobbs said live jamming sessions were one of Sheeran's favourite things to do."Events like this help remind people that music is about connection," said Mr Hobbs."That is really the heart of music."The venue, in St Peter's Street, has been temporarily renamed The Old Phone after Sheeran's latest single.The singer, who went to school in Framlingham and still lives in Suffolk, last week announced a series of three homecoming concerts at Ipswich Town's Portman Road stadium.The 34-year-old star is a keen supporter of the club and a minority shareholder.

But she admitted: 'I'll be glad when it's all just over because it makes me get too stressed.' Mayo-born Peggy is hoping to travel to Dublin to see Oasis perform in Croke Park, but she has just had a knee replacement operation so is currently unsure as to whether she will be fit enough to make the journey from her home in Manchester. She said: 'I'm hoping to get to the Oasis concert in Dublin in August if I can hobble around. That's my plan anyway… it will be great. I'm sick of bloody exercising it, up and down the stairs, they say it takes anything up to nine months to be right again… I am finding it hard going up and down the stairs. Still, we have to get there, we have to get on with it.' While her sons are multi-millionaires, Peggy insists on remaining in her same modest council house in Manchester, surrounded by friends and her familiar haunts. The only thing she asked the brothers to do was replace her garden gate, the outlet reports. This comes after Liam told a fan on X that he considered the famous feud with Noel as 'wasted' years. A fan on X asked: 'How does it feel singing songs with ur brother again? Like old times?' To this Liam replied with his regret: 'You know what it's spiritual but I can't help think about all those wasted years what a waste of PRECIOUS time.' More Trending Just a month short of 16 years since Noel announced he could no longer work with his brother Liam, the Britpop legends will be taking to the stage once more on July 5. They are performing in Cardiff, before heading to their native Manchester for a five-night run, and London's Wembley Stadium at the end of the month. Edinburgh and Dublin dates are set for August, before Noel and Liam head over to kick off the North America leg of their tour. Ana says the food stall is more of a 'love story than a business story' and says she and Andres, who comes from Colombia, have the same dream to help people in South America and the Latin community in Glasgow. 'We share the same vision, it's a business yes, we are starting something new because there are no Colombian places in Glasgow but the mission in the future is to create a charity or community for Latin people who are here. 'Then we want to help people in South America because we still have a lot of family there and they need clothes, food and money for education so our dream in the future is to create something so we can help our people.' Colombia Bites serves dishes such empanadas, tostadas and arepas, with Ana using her own recipes. Ana was born in Uruguay and has lived in Italy and Spain but learned to cook Venezuelan and Colombian dishes, with Andres' family also now helping her. New adventure launched by Powys outdoor escape company
