RG's Almost Heaven Harley Davidson's annual Chili Cook-Off helps Veterans
CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WBOY) — RG's Almost Heaven Harley-Davidson held its annual Chili Cook-Off fundraiser on Saturday, with all proceeds benefiting a local veterans' organization.
The entry fee for contestants in the chili cook-off was $10, with all proceeds going to Operation Firm Handshake, a veteran-led organization that assists veterans in distress along with their day of recognition in May to honor, reunite and feed veterans and their families and friends. More than 40 participants entered their chili for judging, while attendees enjoyed live music by The Fridley Boys, along with raffles and prizes.
Events and Marketing Director of RG's Almost Heaven Harley Davidson Traci Nicholson was happy to give back to veterans.
'We love to pick the charities, and that the money stays local, that you see who it benefits, why it benefits, and how much it benefits,' Nicholson said. 'So, we love being a part of this community. The motorcycling community in whole no matter what you ride is the biggest charitable organization in the world. So, every weekend they ride for something, and this is not a cheap hobby.'
Dark and Dusty Tap House announces 'unanticipated' closure
President and Director of Operation Firm Handshake Martin Broderick was grateful for the fundraiser.
'RG Harley, especially Traci has been a blessing to us because this is the first event of the year for us and this is when our funds are the lowest,' Broderick said. 'And so, it allows us to keep our mission alive and help veterans in distress.'
All funds raised for Operation Firm Handshake go directly toward supporting veterans. The organization emphasized that their work wouldn't be possible without the dedication of volunteers, making it a true team effort.
On Saturday Feb. 15, RG's Almost Heaven Harley-Davidson will host its Ride Into 2025 event, celebrating Valentine's Day at the dealership along with an in-store poker run. Additionally, on March 1, Operation Firm Handshake will hold its Memorial Elimination Dinner in Mount Clare at 5 p.m.

Adam Silver: NBA ‘should be exploring' expansion
Commissioner Adam Silver offered hope to cities looking to land an NBA franchise, saying Thursday that the league "should be exploring" expansion. Silver addressed the media in his annual state-of-the-league talk ahead of Game 1 of the NBA Finals between the Indiana Pacers and the host Oklahoma City Thunder. Regarding the addition of teams, Silver said, "I don't think it's automatic, because it depends on your perspective on the future of the league. As I've said before, expansion in a way is selling equity in the league. If you believe in the league, you don't necessarily want to add partners. "On the other hand, we recognize there are underserved markets in the United States and elsewhere -- I think markets that deserve to have NBA teams. Probably even if we were to expand, more than we can serve." In terms of potential expansion locations, Silver said, "There's been no lack of interest. I essentially have said to people from several different cities, 'We're just not engaging in that process right now.' "I want to be fair to everyone. So I don't want to have meetings with some and not others. So if we were to say yes, we're now going to move into a more formal exploratory phase. We would take those meetings, and in addition likely we would engage with outside advisers who would look at markets, look at economic opportunities and media opportunities, etc." The NBA hasn't expanded since the then-Charlotte Bobcats joined ahead of the 2004-05 season. Las Vegas and Seattle are widely viewed as the top targets for future teams, with Mexico City potentially in the mix, too. Silver addressed several other topics: --While a spate of regular-season injuries prompted speculation about the NBA cutting down the 82-game regular season, Silver dismissed the notion of a lighter schedule. "Money's part of it, there's no question about it," Silver said. "We're a business. Having said that, I don't really see the benefit to reducing the number of games. People used to say you should reduce the number of games because it will lead to a reduction in a number of injuries. We have absolutely no data to suggest that. ... "Injuries are considered down this playoffs from what has been historically our second-lowest in 10 years. So we have pretty healthy teams coming into the Finals now." --After the success of the NHL's 4 Nations Face-Off, the NBA is likely to switch to nationality-based format for the 2026 All-Star Game in Inglewood, Calif. "I don't think a straight-up USA versus World makes sense," Silver said. "That's not what they did in the NHL, either. There probably will be some different teams we form." Noting that the 2026 game will be played amid the Winter Olympics in Italy, Silver said, "I think we can play off that nationalism. ... I think there's a real opportunity to create enhanced interest and enhanced competition from the players." --Silver lauded the fact that the NBA is about to crown its seventh different champion in seven years. "We set out to create a system that allowed for more competition around the league, the goal being to have 30 teams all in a position, if well-managed, to be competing for championships," he said. "And that's what we're seeing here. ... "The goal isn't necessarily to have a different champion every year. It's to have, as we said before, parity of opportunity." --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2023 - All Rights Reserved

Sneaker loafers, a hot new shoe trend, toe the line between fashionable and geriatric
The newest sneaker trend is a lovechild of a chunky sneaker and a corporate loafer. The result is a sleek and comfortable — if geriatric-looking — shoe. The biggest names in the sneaker world, like Nike, New Balance, and Converse, have released or are set to release loafer-sneaker hybrids this year. The creative director of Atmos, a Japanese sneaker retailer, posted a picture of the new Nike Air Max Phenomena on Instagram on Monday, saying it is set to be released soon. The bottom half of the black shoe looks fits right into the Nike Air Max family with its chunky sole and air units. The top half, a loafer silhouette which sports a subtle silver Nike logo, looks like it would belong an office. The new shoe design comes at a crucial point for Nike, which has been criticized for leaning too heavily on its retro styles and not innovating. Nike's competitors got to the laceless snoafer trend before the shoe giant did. On June 10, Converse released its All-Star Coinloafer, a slightly less chunky loafer-sneaker with a white top and black sole. The shoe brand has dabbled with loafer-adjacent designs since the start of the year. On Monday, New Balance announced two new colors for its New Balance 1906L Loafer model — "Black/Royal Blue" and "Metallic Pink." Other colors of the model were released earlier this year. The New Balance loafers look more like quintessential sports shoes than the Nike or Converse models, with only their shorter tongue and lack of shoelaces pointing to their loafer roots. Representatives for Nike, Converse, and New Balance did not respond to requests for comment from Business Insider. Other brands that have hopped on the trend this year include Hoka, Ugg, and Puma. A comfortable corporate shoe Carol Davidson, a New York-based image consultant, said the loafer-sneaker trend could be partially attributed to workers heading back to the office. "With more people returning to the office, a more streamlined loafer sneaker will have an appeal, as it feels more elevated than just a sneaker," she said. Davidson said she could see it becoming a summer trend, as fashion leans "toward more polished clothing and footwear" in the fall. She said the loafer sneakers would work nicely with a casual summer shirtdress or wide-leg trousers. Edith Chan, a Madrid-based stylist and image consultant, said snoafers are versatile and easy to wear for errands and casual work environments. "For office professionals, creatives, or those who love the effortless chic vibe, these shoes are perfect," Chan said. Teng Chan Leong, the CEO of Malaysia-based marketing consultancy Skribble, said the snoafer fits Gen Z's preference for oversized tops and bottoms. His company has worked with brands like Adidas. "The sneaker-loafer trend seems to be the industry's response to marry functionality and form, especially for today's consumer who is seeking for something that stands out, fashionable, and yet highly comfortable," Teng said. He also said "feminine sneaker-loafer hybrids" point to a "rise in interest of women in the sneaker culture." The shoe trend follows another hybrid trend this year — ballerina sneakers. This trend meshed the design of ultra-feminine ballet flats into the body of a sneaker.
