Love Island star's healthy cousin, 28, dies suddenly from 'terrible' condition
Love Island star Konnor Ewudzi has revealed that his family "suffered terribly" due to Sickle cell - and even lead to the devastating loss of his cousin at just 28-years-old.
Love Island contestant Konnor Ewudzi is raising awareness for World Sickle Cell Day (June 19) by sharing the devastating effect of the condition, effecting a large majority of his own family.
Sickle cell is a genetic condition that affects the development of a person's red blood cells, where they develop into crescent shapes that can create blockages of blood vessels. These blockages of cells cause a lot of pain and even damage organs.
Konnor, who starred in the 2024 season of Love Island, and now works as a barber in Cornwall, shared how he was lucky enough not to inherit the genetic condition that requires two parents who both have the gene. He explained: "I am on one of the lucky ones. My Mum Siobhan is mixed race, and she didn't carry the trait, which is why I am so fortunate," charting his "luck" to his mother's mixed heritage.
However the rest of his family were not so lucky. Konnor shared how his father Godfrey, sister Billie-May, Auntie Freda, Uncle Richard and late Cousin Alexander "suffered terribly growing up, with hospital visits and blood transfusions required to help them with their pain" due to Sickle cell.
Leaving a permanent effect on his family, the Love Islander opened up about the death of his cousin due to the condition. He said: "My cousin, Alexander was born with sickle cell. He died at just 28, out of the blue".
Alexander's death was unexpected, occurring just after he graduated from Cambridge University as an architect. "He was not sick or suffering any long term illnesses – his organs just gave up one day. It is so sad that this can rob us of such beautiful lives at such young ages. Testing is so key. And blood giving even more so," Konnor said.
In an effort to avoid further tragedy, Konnor's family now advocate for testing of Sickle Cell. "Seeing the way it has affected Freda, my Brother Richard and the sad loss of my late nephew, Alexander, is just heart-breaking. We just want to help more people avoid what we went through if possible," his dad, Godfrey, explained.
The star's sister, Billie-May, a sufferer of Sickle Cell, added: "[Testing] is definitely something I have to think about when I meet a new partner. Like it is on my mind when I start dating someone new – I don't talk about it much but it is really important young people are aware of it".
To raise awareness and encourage people to test for the debilitating disease, Konnor's family gathered in Abbey Wood's estate, East London, for a photoshoot to highlight the effects the condition has on real people and families. Abbey Wood is the location of where Netflix 's Supacell was filmed, with Konnor highlight how the hit series excellently raised awareness for the condition.
He said: "The series did an amazing job of highlighting the condition to the public, but there is so much more people need to know".

Affecting over 18,000 people in the UK, Rachel Simpson, the communications officer and SEL lead mentor for Sickle Cell Society, urges anyone who is unsure of their genotype to get tested before planning a family planning, should they wish to.
Rachel said: "What we really need more than anything is for people to give more blood. Blood transfusions are the main treatment process for people with the disorder, and many don't know that people with the trait can give blood. It's so important to donate if you can".
Konnor also pointed out that 'one blood unit or donation which takes 20 mins can help up to three patients" and that he hopes, by sharing his story, the numbers of unit donations increase.

Now she is back for more adventuring. This time, teenage Dora, played by Samantha Lorraine, is embarking on a new journey deep in the jungle on a quest to find the mythical treasure of Sol Dorado. Along the way she will have to battle villains, with the help of her loyal cousin Diego, archaeologist Camila the Crusader and her trusty sidekick Boots the monkey. After making its premiere on kids' channel Nickelodeon UK on July 2, it will be available to stream – for kids and adults – on Paramout+. The Institute - MGM+, July 13 14 BASED on a 2019 novel by horror writer Stephen King, this eight-episode thriller follows 12-year-old genius Luke Ellis, who is kidnapped and wakes up in a mysterious facility where children with unusual abilities are being held against their will. Celebrity Infested Waters - ITV, July 14 WHAT better way to mark the 50th anniversary of the film Jaws than to challenge a group of ocean-phobic celebrities to dive alongside sharks? Filmed off the coast of Bimini in the Bahamas, this new reality format sees the group coming face to face with increasingly larger and more dangerous sharks. The brutal dumpings, cruel uncouplings and secret hook-ups have made the 12th season one of the most talked about shows of the moment. And while most viewers are talking about the love drama on screen, Harry Cooksley - who was seen having a secret kiss with bombshell Yasmin Pettet - and Ben Holbrough - who's with Shakira Khan - are trending after footage of their dramatic hair transformations emerged. That's right, 'Love Island Harry hair transplant' and 'Love Island Ben hair transplant' are breakout search terms for the Islanders, according to Google Trends. Perhaps unsurprising, 'Love Island Harry before and after hair transplant' is also trending - people love to have a nose at those 'before and after' pictures! Before showing off his full mullet in the villa, semi-pro footballer Harry, 30, says he used to hide his receding hairline with caps. He flew to Turkey for a hair transplant, thought to have cost over £5,500. In a throwback video from 2018, which has gone viral, Harry – then aged 23 – shared his journey at the EstePera clinic in Istanbul. The taxi driver and model was visibly thrilled with the results. 'That's sick,' he said as he admired his new hair. In an update six months after his surgery, he revealed that his hair has been growing thicker, stronger and healthier, with 80 percent back. The Waterfront: Is The New Drama From The Creator Of Dawson's Creek Worth Watching? Read What Critics Say
One of Netflix's newest arrivals is The Waterfront , already dubbed 'Dawson's Creek for adults', which sounds like perfect weekend viewing to us. It's even created by the same person: Kevin Williamson. Starring Jake Weary, Melissa Benoist, Danielle Campbell, Mario Bello and Holt McCallany, this drama is bound to introduce you to some new faces too. But is the new show worth watching? Is it genuinely gripping or just a good comfort watch? Read below to find out. Set in the fictional seaside town, Havenport, North Carolina, this eight-part Netflix series follows the prominent yet dysfunctional family, the Buckleys, as they try to keep their decaying fishing empire afloat by entering the dangerous world of the drug trade. It doesn't sound too far off last summer's hit show, The Perfect Couple, or any of the Harlan Coben series, so if you liked any of those then this one might be worth a try. Yes, you can watch the official trailer for the series below. Nick Hilton at The Independent gave the series three stars, describing it as 'predictable to a fault' but 'hard not to keep watching'. The Guardian 's Lucy Mangan agrees, giving The Waterfront three stars too. 'Twists come thick and fast, there's tons of plot and action is set in a water-based community,' she writes. 'The creator of the '90s megahit's new show is an opportunity to wallow in nostalgia – albeit with added drug running.' It is described as 'highly bingeable' by Variety too. Aramide Tinubu explains the series is inspired by Williamson's father, who was a fisherman and began smuggling drugs in the 1980s to make ends meet. ' The Waterfront is a highly entertaining series about four people willing to do anything to hold on to their legacy, even if it means turning on each other in the process,' reads the review. The New York Times ' Margaret Lyons praised the show for bringing 'more murder to Netflix'. 'The show is one of many to follow the Yellowstone model, a family saga of violence and secrets, of huffy men and sly women, of distinctive names. It is also about land that's been in this family for generations, gosh darn it – land that's our legacy if only the cruelties of debt and developers would abate,' she writes. It might only have a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an audience rating of 3.9, but the reviews are largely positive. This is a watchable, familiar show with all the twists and turns audiences are looking for. If you have a day to yourself to lie on the sofa away from the heat, you know what to do.
