Tata Motors working with govt for alternate sources for rare earth magnets: N Chandrasekaran

Tata Motors is looking for alternate resources for rare earth magnet other than China. Check Offers Tata Motors, the homegrown car manufacturer that leads the Indian electric passenger vehicle market, is working with the government to find alternate sources for rare earth magnets. The move comes at a time when China's sudden export curbs for the critical rare earth magnets have created anxiety in the auto industry, and several automotive players have been expecting massive disruption, even production shutdown, in the coming months if the situation continues. The rare earth magnet is one of the highly critical components for electric vehicles. These magnets are also heavily used in the internal combustion engine-powered vehicles. China controls 90 per cent of the global rare earth magnet market, and its sudden export curb has left the auto industry players in trouble. Tata Motors claims to be working with the Indian government to find a solution by finding an alternate source for rare earth magnets. PTI has reported that N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and Tata Group, has said to the company's shareholders that as of now, the rare earth magnet crisis is not a concern, but this is something that he automaker is watching very carefully. "As of now, we are okay. We are not facing are able to source the magnets that we need, and we also have plans for having the right level of inventory. We are working with the government. Also, we are working on sourcing from alternate sources," Chandrasekaran noted while responding to queries from shareholders on the impact of China's move to restrict exports of rare earth elements and the shortage of magnets. The Indian automobile industry had already sought government support in expediting approvals from the Chinese government for importing rare earth magnets used in various applications, including passenger cars. However, the crisis still continues. Meanwhile, speaking about the impact of the Israel-Iran conflict on the operations of Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover, Chandrasekaran said that these companies will be able to tackle any geopolitical issues in the short term, but are completely ready and poised for excellent growth and will leverage the opportunity that this industry has to offer. Jaguar Land Rover to face $2.1billion tariff hit: N Chandrasekaran

Tata Motors-owned British luxury carmaker Jaguar Land Rover faces potential tariff impacts of 1.6 billion pounds (about $2.1 billion) from new US trade measures , Tata Group chairman N Chandrasekaran said. He noted that ongoing mitigation plans aim to reduce this impact to 600 million pounds. "Tariff is a major issue, primarily for JLR," said Chandrasekaran at Tata Motors ' 80th AGM on Friday. "Without intervention, JLR's tariff rate would have gone from 2.5% to 27.5%. With the US-UK trade deal, the 27.5% tariff will drop to 10%. The overall impact even of the 10% will be 1.6 billion pounds. But JLR has taken a lot of steps through which it will be able to reduce the impact to 600 million pounds." This AGM marked Chandrasekaran's first appearance at a shareholder meeting after the Air India flight 171 crash on June 12, having missed shareholder meetings at Tata Consumer Products and TCS. The meeting held additional significance as it was the final AGM for Tata Motors before its division into two listed companies by year-end, focusing on passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles, respectively. Chandrasekaran also assured shareholders that China's export restrictions on rare earth magnets pose no immediate supply concerns, while the company explores alternative sourcing options. Rare earth elements play a crucial role in the production of permanent magnets, which are essential components in electric motors.

JLR's weak forecast, stiff local competition drags down Tata Motors

Tata Motors' shares are under pressure once again, weighed down by underperformance in the domestic market compared to rival automakers and a cautious FY26 outlook from its British subsidiary, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). The stock has slumped over 8% in the past eight sessions and is down 10% year-to-date in 2025, even as the benchmark Nifty50 has gained nearly 6%. The renewed selling pressure comes as the stock was attempting a recovery after hitting a 52-week low of Rs 536 in early April, a drop of more than 50% from its 52-week high of Rs 1,179. Following JLR's key investor day presentation, several brokerages have turned cautious on the stock, assigning it an 'underperform' or 'sell' rating. Global brokerage firm Jefferies has reiterated an "Underperform" rating on Tata Motors and slashed its target price to Rs 600, significantly below the current market price of Rs 675.50. Nuvama reiterated 'reduce' rating and kept a target price of Rs 670 while factoring in a subdued 3% consolidated revenue and EBITDA CAGR over FY25–27. JLR in slow lane In what is perceived as a setback for investors, JLR last week projected that its operating profitability would suffer in 2025-26 and that its free cash flow would take a big hit due to US tariff hikes and a slowdown in the Chinese market. JLR, which contributed 71% to Tata Motor's total revenue and 79% to its total operating profit in 2024-25, has guided for operating profit margin in the range of 5-7%, which is lower than 8.4% it recorded in the last fiscal, as it would face higher tariffs in its biggest market -- North America. JLR's FY25 wholesale volumes reached 400,898 units and retail sales were 428,854 units. These figures represent a slight decline of 0.1% and 0.7%, respectively, compared to the previous year. Nuvama Institutional Equities also flagged volume contraction at JLR due to the discontinuation of ICE Jaguar models, US tariffs, and a continued weak outlook for the premium segment in China. It expects muted performance in Tata Motors' domestic commercial vehicles segment due to a high base and rising competition from railways.
