Soccer Aid's Martin Compston's professional football career before he left for acting
The Scots Line of Duty star is starring in the Soccer Aid line-up, however, this isn't the first time he's laced up his football boots...
Before he was a huge star in the likes of Line of Duty and Mayflies, Martin Compston was actually a professional footballer. The Scots actor is mostly known for playing a waistcoat wearing DS Steve Arnott in the hit BBC drama.
The 41-year-old, is set to play Soccer Aid at Old Trafford this evening in the Rest of the World against England, with former Italy star Leonardo Bonucci among his team-mates. He's not the only Scots actor on his team either, as Baby Reindeer star Richard Gadd is also set to take on England.
However, before Celtic daft Compston turned to acting, he was actually a pro footballer. In his early football career, he had stints with Aberdeen and Morton. The Greenock-born star even played two senior matches for Morton at the end of the 2001/02 season, but without much success.
His first appearance resulted in a 4-0 defeat against Alloa Athletic, while his second – another 4-0 defeat, this time against Queen of the South – saw Morton relegated from the Scottish Second Division.
Speaking on his pal Si Ferry's famous football podcast, Open Goal, Compston opened up about his brief football career. He explained that he was first spotted while playing in a Scottish underage cup final against a Celtic side which included future Man Utd star Darren Fletcher.
After a stint with his hometown club, he was signed by Aberdeen where he played alongside future Premier League star Dean Windass. Compston even captained the Aberdeen youth team for a short period, but the actor knew when his time was up at the club.
He told Si: "I remember I was captain at a game and one of the top scouts came down, and we got beat off an East Kilbride select, I went, 'That's that f*****!'"
After his time at Aberdeen, Compston found himself back at Morton in the Scottish Second Division. "It just wasn't a good time to be at the club," the actor admitted. "They'd just gone down to the second division and we were struggling.
"It was a mad time. We were full-time the YTS [Youth Team Scholarship] players. There was only three or four of us cleaning 40 pairs of boots and cleaning the stadium.
"The first team were coming in training at night. There was a lot of hanging about. I felt more like a cleaner than a football player.
"I made my debut when I was 17," Compston recalled. "We were away to Alloa. I knew they were only going to pitch me in if we were well up or well down.
"I felt terrible, Alloa were winning 2-0 with 40 minutes left and they put a third one in and I was like, 'You beauty.'
"The last game of the season, we had to win to stay up and we were playing Queen of the South who had to win to win the league. It was a sell-out, 14,000. The atmosphere was unbelievable."
The day didn't go to plan however, he added: "There was some b******... at half-time, I knew I was going on. So I'm spraying balls about.
"It smashed somebody and he's run on and rugby tackled me. The stewards were just all laughing. It was nerve-wracking. It was Scottish second division football but it's like, 'You've done that.'"
Compston began acting during his football career after he bagged a lead role in Ken Loach's film 'Sweet Sixteen' while still with Morton. "It worked out perfect," Compston explained. "I'd just finished my exams and I'd got my Morton contract. The auditions were at the end of the year.
"I went to [Morton manager] Peter Cormack and asked if it was alright to miss a couple of days of pre-season. We filmed it in the close season. He said, 'You're a fit boy, you'll be fine.' I finished filming and went back to Greenock Morton.
"I remember being gutted because in the programme notes, the players were asked who's their favourite actor and not one of them said me. I thought one of them, for a joke, would throw my name in there!"
Despite Loach being impressed by Compston's acting ability, the director advised him to keep in at his football career.
He decided against Loach's advice and auditioned for a Heartbeat spin-off called The Royal. He had been sent the wrong script but still got the part and from then on his mind was set.
"That was a big wake-up call," Compston said. "They don't know who I am. They hadn't seen Sweet Sixteen. To get that, I said, 'OK, I'm alright at this.'
"Morton weren't going through the best of times. I was driving up the road one day, passing Cappielow [Greenock Morton's stadium] and I just went in and said [to manager Dave McPherson], 'I think I'm going to give this acting a crack.' He said, 'Sorry to lose you,' but I didn't find it too hard to be honest."

SPFL club forced to cancel friendly against Scottish Premiership side due to stadium repairs

Morton were due to host St Mirren in a non-competitive clash on Tuesday, July 8, with both teams looking to step up their preparations for the Premier Sports Cup which gets underway just a few days later. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 The roof at the famous 'cowshed' still neds repaired Credit: Kenny Ramsay The game was set to be held at Morton's home stadium Cappielow Park, but it's no longer allowed to go ahead due to repairs to the 'Cowshed' roof after it suffered damage from Storm Eowyn in January. Several corrugated iron panels on the roof had blown off as the West coast of Scotland was hit by gale force winds. Morton have still yet to fix the damage but the club tonight confirmed that repair work will begin next week. However, the friendly cannot be played while the construction takes place. A statement from the Scottish Championship club read: "The club are pleased to confirm that the long-awaited works to repair the Cowshed Roof begin on Monday. "It is expected that works will continue throughout most of July and be completed by the start of the William Hill Championship season when we welcome Dunfermline to Cappielow on 2nd August. "Following discussions with our contractor, the pre-season match scheduled against St Mirren on Tuesday 8th July has now been cancelled. "We confirm the Premier Sports Cup tie versus Stenhousemuir, due to be played at Cappielow on 15th July, will go ahead but without supporters in the Cowshed. "We will provide an update on that in due course. "We thank supporters in advance for their understanding on this matter, and look forward to having the Cowshed back in full working order for the 2025/26 William Hill Championship campaign." A statement from St Mirren said: 'Morton have today informed us that they will no longer be able to host the planned Communities Cup friendly match at Cappielow on Tuesday 8th July. Lions suffer 54-year first in defeat to Argentina on mixed night for Scots as one man impresses

The British and Irish Lions lost an opening match for the first time in 54 years and it would be hard to argue that Argentina did not deserve their win in Dublin. They mixed skill and doggedness and were no respecter of their hosts' fancy reputations as they came from behind at the mid point of the second half to emerge victorious through Santiago Cordero's try, their third of the night. The 28-24 victory meant it was the Pumas who hoisted the 1888 Cup at the Aviva Stadium as the Lions went away to lick their wounds and pack their bags for Australia. The head coach couldn't help but be impressed by Sione Tuipulotu who marked his first appearance in the famous red jersey with an all-action performance which saw him involved in most of the Lions' best moments. Getty Images Duhan van der Merwe, his Scotland team-mate, had a less satisfactory evening and was guilty of losing possession at a crucial juncture just before half-time which led to an Argentina try for Tomas Albornoz, their outstanding fly-half. Van der Merwe had some dangerous moments during his 65 minutes but, worryingly he was seen with ice on his troublesome ankle after going off. Scotland forwards Pierre Schoeman and Scott Cummings came off the bench and the former had some trademark big carries. Cummings, who only got nine minutes, was busy enough. Ignacio Mendy had scored Argentina's first try and they led 21-10 at the break. But the Lions, who also scored three tries, through Bundee Aki in the first half and a penalty try and Tadhg Beirne in the second, got their noses in front to lead 24-21 before Cordero's clincher. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad There had been pre-match grumblings about Argentina being weakened by the absence of many of their French-based players but they made the brighter start. The pressure was immediately on the Lions who went offside. The Pumas were happy to take the points and Albornoz slotted the penalty. Getty Images We got our first glance of van der Merwe soon after as he dummied and cut inside before being held up in the Argentina 22. The Lions had got themselves into a good position and thought they scored the game's first try only for Luke Cowan-Dickie not to ground the ball after breaking off from a lineout maul. Fin Smith restored parity with a penalty after 10 minutes but Argentina's response was immediate and emphatic. Santiago Carreras delayed his pass perfectly to play in Mendy who cut back inside to score. Tuipulotu tried to drag the Lions back into it but his try was chalked off. Both sides had knocked on in the build-up but Farrell's side weren't to be denied for long and Tuipulotu was a key contributor. The Glasgow centre popped the ball to Fin Smith who shipped it on to Aki. The Ireland centre powered over the line, taking three Pumas with him. It was a strong, strong finish and Fin Smith's conversion put the Lions 10-8 ahead. Argentina's kicking game was on point and the Lions were finding it difficult to click. Albornoz added two more penalties, the last one just before half-time. The Lions stole the ball from the restart and it was shipped wide to van der Merwe but the Edinburgh man coughed up possession and Argentina broke away and scored, Albornoz finishing off the move and then converting his own try to put the Pumas 21-10 up at half-time. You have to go back to 1971 for the last time the Lions lost their opening game and they came out in the second half with a determination to avoid a repeat of that 54-year-old anomaly against Queensland in Brisbane. They scored two tries in the opening 13 minutes after the interval. Tuipulotu made a 40-metre break to move the Lions into the danger zone and they won a penalty which they kicked to the corner. Cowan-Dickie was held up on the line but not legally and the penalty try was awarded. The Pumas' lead was down to four points and it was wiped out completely by Beirne's try, the lock being played in by Tomos Williams after Tuipulotu had again made good headway down the left. Fin Smith's conversion made it 24-21 to the Lions but the Pumas weren't done. They were playing with an aggressive intensity which was forcing mistakes form their opponents and the capitalised once again.
