British shoppers spending more on beef, but buying less
Spend on beef products increased by 5pc between late February and mid-May compared to the same period last year, due to a combination of a 2.4pc decrease in volumes purchased as well as a 7.7pc increase in average prices paid, according to the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), citing Kantar data.
Total primary beef volumes sold to British consumers by supermarkets decreased by 2.5pc in this period. Mince saw a 1.8pc decrease in volumes purchased (-607 tonnes) due to a decrease in shoppers and volume purchased per trip.
Diced beef saw volume decreases this period (-4.2pc) due to a decrease in buyers and a decrease in frequency of purchase. Steak also saw a 4pc decrease in volumes due to declines in volumes purchased per trip and number of buyers.
Beef roasting volumes saw a moderate increase (+0.4pc). While there is a decrease in frequency of purchase, this was offset by an increase in volume purchased per trip, likely influenced by Easter falling within this period.

Meanwhile, the AHDB has also reported that the total British cattle population at April 1 has contracted again to 7.54 million head, down 1.7pc on the previous year.
A key driver of this decline was contraction in the beef breeding herd, down 3.4pc from the same time last year. The dairy breeding herd has remained more constant, down by only 0.2 pc from last April.
The cattle population available for beef production aged 12-30 months was recorded to be down by 52,000 head (-3pc) compared to April last year, with the biggest reduction being seen in the 18-24 month age group.

The AHDB said this indicates continued beef supply tightness moving forward, potentially lending support to prices over the next six to 12 months.
However, the number of cattle for beef production recorded aged zero to six months has increased by almost 8,000 head compared to April last year, with year-on-year increases in beef animals of both sexes.

'The composition of the GB beef herd is also continuing to shift, with breed types changing and dairy beef becoming ever more prevalent as dairy bull numbers continue to fall,' she said.

Tech tycoon Mike Lynch's sunken super yacht lifted to surface
Salvage experts lifted Mike Lynch's sunken superyacht to the surface and began pumping seawater out of it on Saturday, 10 months after it sank off the coast of Sicily, killing the British tech tycoon, his teenage daughter and five others. Mr Lynch was born to a Co Tipperary mother who was a nurse and a Co Cork father who was a firefighter. Work resumed at first light, with one of the most powerful maritime cranes in Europe having been used to haul the 56-metre-long (184-foot) Bayesian from beneath the waves. The upper decks appeared badly damaged while the blue hull was encrusted with mud. The Bayesian was moored off the small port of Porticello, near Palermo, in August last year when it sank during a sudden storm. The yacht was vulnerable to violent winds and was probably knocked over by gusts of more than 117 km (73 miles) per hour, an interim British report said last month. The vessel will be held in an elevated position over the weekend while checks and preparations are made, said TMC Marine, which has been leading the salvage operation, working with Dutch specialists Hebo Maritiemservice to lift the yacht 50 metres from the seabed over the past few days. It is then expected to be transported to the nearby port of Termini Imerese on Monday and handed over to the authorities who are investigating the sinking. The recovery process has been made easier after the vessel's 72-metre mast was detached using a remote-controlled cutting tool and placed on the seabed on Tuesday. Mike Lynch's superyacht raised above water in Italy
Mike Lynch's superyacht, Bayesian, has been raised above water in Italy. The yacht could be seen at around 7am local time in an upright position. Salvage crews said that water is being pumped out of the Bayesian before it will be fully raised in a few hours. A project insider told the PA news agency: 'The vessel is on surface, but not clear of the sea as yet. 'Pumping out of water will continue, and it will be lunchtime – following a series of lifting and resting procedures – before she will finally be fully and finally out of the water.' This comes as the 56-metre (184ft) Bayesian is set to be lifted to the surface near the fishing town of Porticello on Saturday or Sunday before being taken to nearby Termini Imerese — where Italian prosecutors investigating the sinking are based. Investigators in the UK and Italy say raising the vessel is crucial to fully understanding what happened. Last week, salvage teams expected the boat to be raised later in June, but thanks to 'accelerated progress', the timeline was brought forward. The yacht's 72-metre (236ft) mast was cut off on Tuesday using a remote-controlled tool and rested on the seabed to be picked up later. Over the next few days, workers will fit hoses and plugs into the fuel tank vents on the yacht's right side, which had been lying flat on the seabed. The yacht will then be slowly tilted fully upright, supported by strong steel straps attached to Hebo Lift 10 — one of Europe's most powerful sea cranes. Billionaire Mr Lynch, 59, and his daughter Hannah, 18, were among seven people who died when the Bayesian sank off the coast of the Italian island on August 19. About 70 specialist personnel had been mobilised to the fishing village of Porticello from across Europe to work on the recovery operation, which began last month. Inquest proceedings in the UK are looking at the deaths of Mr Lynch and his daughter, as well as Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, 70, and his wife, Judy Bloomer, 71, who were all British nationals. Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) investigators said in an interim report that the Bayesian was knocked over by 'extreme wind'. The yacht had a vulnerability to winds, but the owner and crew would not have known, the report said.
