48th Yercaud Summer Festival to be held from May 23 to 29
Tamil Nadu Minister for Tourism R. Rajendran on Tuesday announced that the 48th Yercaud Summer Festival and Flower Show will be held for seven days from May 23 to 29.
Participating in a meeting held at Salem Collectorate, the Minister discussed with the Horticulture Department officials the preparation to be done for the flower show at Anna Park in Yercaud, and the amenities to be provided for the tourists visiting the festival.
After the meeting, the Minister told reporters that based on the direction of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin the summer festival and flower show are being held from May 23 to 29 at Yercaud to attract tourists. Minister for Agriculture and Farmer's Welfare M.R.K. Panneerselvam and Minister for Forests R.S. Rajakannappan will participate.
A total of 1,50,000 flowers in more than 25,000 pots will be displayed during the flower show. The show will feature floral replicas of wild animals, Mettur Dam, and various structures. Stalls explaining the achievements of the government; pet shows, cookery events, healthy baby competitions, and cultural events conducted jointly by officials of the Integrated Children Development Scheme, Mahalir Thittam, the Tourism Department, and the Art and Culture Department will be part of the festival. Sports events such as football, cricket, handball, and kabaddi will be conducted daily during the festival, Mr. Rajendran added.
On the traffic diversion during the summer festival, Minister Rajendran said that for the seven days, four-wheelers, including heavy vehicles, should reach Yercaud through Hasthampatti-Gorimedu and vehicles heading to Salem from Yercaud should pass via Yercaud-Vazhavandhi-Kottachedu-Kuppanur. These stretches will be made one-way to reduce traffic congestion, the Minister added.
In the meeting, District Collector R. Brindha Devi and officials from concerned departments participated.

Minister launches 111 new mini bus services in Salem district
Under the New Comprehensive Mini Bus Scheme 2024, a total of 53 new mini buses and 59 extended route services began operations across the district on Monday. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin launched the scheme from Thanjavur via video conferencing, following which Minister for Tourism R. Rajendran flagged off the buses at the Old Bus Stand in the presence of District Collector R. Brindha Devi. The Minister said the scheme would primarily benefit residents in rural areas. Services launched in each division were, Salem West Region - 4 new mini bus services, 18 route-extended services, Salem East Region - 11 new services, 7 extended routes, Salem South Region - 2 new services, 5 extended routes, Sankari Region - 10 new services, 6 extended routes, Attur Region - 22 new services, 10 extended routes, and Mettur Region - 4 new services, 12 extended routes. Mayor A. Ramachandran, former MLA S.R. Sivalingam, Assistant Collector (Trainee) Vivek Yadav, and officials were also present.

Nandi Hills gearing up to host Karnataka Cabinet meeting on June 19
From its foot to the top, Nandi Hills, one of Bengalureans' favourite getaway destinations, is abuzz with civic work, pruning of trees, beautification of surroundings, and much more, as it gets ready to host the Karnataka Cabinet meeting on June 19. On Friday, representatives of several departments were busy working on the hill when The Hindu visited the spot. A team belonging to the Public Works Department was carrying out the shouldering work on the road leading to the hill. Horticulture Department workers had brought natural lawns to lay in front of a restaurant. They were also arranging ornamental plants brought from the nursery at Lalbagh. Monkey trouble 'After the Cabinet meeting that was conducted on the Male Mahadeshwara Hills, it is now the turn of Nandi Hills to host the State Cabinet. We have also requested the Forest Department to control the large number of monkeys around here without disturbing them,' said an official of the Horticulture Department. In 1986, the second SAARC summit, which was attended by the then Prime Minister late Rajiv Gandhi, was held at Nehru Nilaya on Nandi Hills. Controlling monkeys back then was also a Herculean task. The Cabinet meeting on June 19 will be conducted in the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation's (KSTDC) Mayura Pine Top restaurant. The restaurant is getting a complete makeover as everything from the washrooms to the air conditioning systems were being fixed on Friday. 'We are upgrading our basic infrastructure. This will be a milestone for the KSTDC as we will be hosting the State Cabinet meeting on our property. We are even increasing the bandwidth of our Wi-Fi to ensure uninterrupted live streaming for media and for any other official work,' said Manoj Kumar, manager of Mayura Pine Top. The hall that is being prepared for the meeting will be occupied by Ministers, while separate locations will be provided for officers on special duty, personal assistants, and others. The hall on the ground floor of the restaurant offers an uninterrupted view of the Chickballapur town. Demands of the district With the Cabinet meeting being hosted in Chickballapur, there is a lot of expectations about big announcements for the district. MLA for Chickballapur Pradeep Eshwar, who had come to oversee the preparations on Nandi Hills on Friday, told The Hindu that decisions on many major projects of the district would be taken at the meeting. 'As we are famous for flowers and vegetables, we had requested that the international flower market should not be set up in a public-private partnership. The government has agreed to invest the full amount of ₹150 crore for it, and it will mostly be announced on that day. We have also requested that the storage capacity of Jakkalamadagu reservoir be increased to ensure adequate water supply during summer months,' Mr. Eshwar said. Hopes of ropeway He also said the government might take a call on proposing the Bhoga Nandishwara temple as a UNESCO World Heritage site to attract more foreign tourists to the district. 'While we think that something related to the Yettinahole project will be announced, the final approval for the Nandi ropeway project will definitely be given,' the MLA said. Nandi Hills has been closed for the public from 6 p.m. on June 16 to 5 a.m. on June 20 in view of the Cabinet meeting.

Bengaluru: E-scooters turn Lalbagh visit into an easy, breezy exploration
Bengaluru: Lalbagh is running a trial of electric scooters to help visitors, especially youngsters, explore the sprawling garden with initiative by startup Voltron Dynamics, under its brand 'Fetch Mobility', was launched on June 5 to mark World Environment Day.."This is attracting people from all walks of life," said Balakrishna, Deputy Director, Horticulture Department, Lalbagh. "Walking the garden would take a whole day, but with these eco-friendly electric cycles, visitors can explore it in a jiffy.".Now, explore Lalbagh on electric electric scooters are currently available for paid rides as part of the month-long trial. Fetch Mobility is yet to finalise the number of vehicles for regular deployment and the revenue-sharing model with the Horticulture now, a 20-minute ride is priced at Rs 50. The scooters offer a 25-km range on a single charge and three riding modes — Eco, Drive, and Sports, with a top speed of 25 C, a visitor, called it "an all-round nice experience that saves time walking"..John Smith, a student, described it as "a fun ride, worth the money". .A Fetch Mobility representative said that the service has received "great encouragement" so far, and 15 to 20 more scooters are expected within two weeks. Once the trial ends, operations will shift to the main gate.
