3 of TN shelter home dead in suspected food poisoning

Tenkasi: A suspected case of food contamination at a private home for the elderly in Sundarapandiapuram near Tenkasi has left three inmates, including two women, dead over three days. More than 40 have been hospitalised, and several others are under observation. Police have detained the home's founder for questioning. Inmates of Annai Nalvalvu Trust Shelter Home had allegedly consumed contaminated food during non-vegetarian meals on Sunday afternoon and night. According to health officials, 11 inmates initially complained of vomiting and diarrhoea on Monday. "Instead of seeking immediate medical help, the home's founder, Rajendran, administered home remedies on Monday morning. It was only later that night that the affected inmates were taken to Tenkasi Govt Hospital," a senior official said. The situation worsened over the next two days. Shankar Ganesh, 48, of Sencottai died on Tuesday night, while Murugammal, 45, of Chokkampatti and Ambika, 40, of Sencottai, passed away in the early hours of Thursday. Initially, we were not informed they were all from the same shelter. As more patients arrived one by one, it became clear something was wrong, and we informed the police," a senior doctor at Tenkasi GH, told TOI. The shelter home, run by a registered trust, houses 59 residents. After the food contamination became evident from preliminary investigation, food safety department officials collected samples from the premises on Thursday morning. "We are analysing the samples of the food cooked and water samples, but we have not yet confirmed if it is food poisoning," said Pushpa Raj, designated officer, food safety department. The shelter has since been sealed by the district administration, and alternative accommodation is to be arranged for the inmates once discharged from hospital. Eco-friendly smart toilet debuts at Penang's Cecil Street Market

GEORGE TOWN: The newly built smart toilet in Penang is leading the way in eco-friendly innovation, utilising solar-powered lighting and rain-harvested water. The Cecil Street Market toilet received a full makeover offering a high-tech experience with motion sensors and safety features. Penang Island City Council mayor Datuk A. Rajendran said the upgraded toilet was an important step forward in addressing the standard of facilities at locations like local markets. "It is solar-powered and has motion sensors while the water supply comes from harvested rainwater. "There is a screen with data display to indicate air quality, availability (vacancy of toilets) and the number of visitors. "There is an occupant indicator light as well as a panic alarm in case of an emergency," he said during the official opening ceremony at the market here on Sunday (June 8). Rajendran said this was the first of three toilets that would be upgraded to smart toilets in the state this year. "This took five months to complete at a cost of RM462,050. "There are 11 cubicles (six in the women's toilets, four in the men's toilets and one toilet for the disabled). "There is a private feeding room for babies as well," he said. Present during the ceremony were Tanjong MP Lim Hui Ying, state local government and town and country planning committee chairman H'ng Mooi Lye and Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng.

Tamil Nadu Man's Body Mistaken For North Indian Worker's, Sent To Bihar

Chennai: The body of a Tamil Nadu agricultural labourer in his sixties was mistaken for the corpse of a worker from Bihar, and it was sent to the northern state in an ambulance by a state-run hospital in nearby Tiruvallur. When the family of the Tamil farm worker came to the Tiruvallur hospital to take home the body, they were shown a corpse of some other person, which shocked them, and they staged a protest. Subsequently, Tiruvallur Government Medical College Hospital officials discovered that the Tamil agricultural labourer's body had been sent to Bihar by mistake. Also, the Tamil labourer was identified as Rajendran from a village near Tiruttani in Tiruvallur district. Officials, after discovering the truth, immediately alerted the ambulance driver and directed him to return. However, by that time, the vehicle had gone about 800 km away from Tiruvallur. The corpse that the mortuary staff showed to the Tamil farm labourer family was identified as that of a worker, Manoj Manchi (55), from Bihar, who had come last month to Tamil Nadu in search of work. Rajendran died following an attempt to end his life, and Manchi passed away following an illness. While Rajendran's body arrived in Tiruvallur district on Thursday, Manchi's body was sent to Bihar after a relative claimed it. A top official of the government hospital told PTI that she had sent a report to senior officials on the incident and that she could not disclose anything more. A senior district official said an inquiry was on and all appropriate steps were being taken to fix accountability and prevent recurrence.
