TV boss slams Gwyneth Paltrow's intimacy coordinator remarks as ‘irresponsible'

Independent25-03-2025

Gwyneth Paltrow 's recent remarks about intimacy coordinators have been criticized by former Channel 4 drama chief Caroline Hollick, describing the actor's comments as 'quite an irresponsible thing to say.'
Last week, Paltrow said she had refused to work with an intimacy coordinator for her latest movie – even though she and Timothée Chalamet filmed 'a lot of sex.'
The pair recently filmed Josh Safdie's new movie, Marty Supreme, about table tennis star Marty Reisman.
'There's now something called an intimacy coordinator, which I did not know existed,' Paltrow told Vanity Fair.
Paltrow explained that when Marty Supreme 's intimacy coordinator asked her if she was comfortable with doing a certain move, she responded: 'Girl, I'm from the era where you get naked, you get in bed, the camera's on.' She said she ultimately asked the coordinator to 'step a little bit back.'
According to Variety, Hollick, who now works for production company North Road, said at drama festival Series Mania: 'Every now and then an actor makes a comment over whether they like intimacy coordinators or not. Gwyneth Paltrow said she grew up in a time when [actors] 'took our kit off and got on with it.'
'As a powerful woman in Hollywood acting with a man much younger than her, well I'm sure [Chalamet] is chill but I thought it was quite an irresponsible thing to say.'
Hollick continued: 'Bringing an intimacy coordinator on set empowers an actor because there is someone on side who is there to fight for them.
'Producers have an agenda, writers have an agenda and directors have an agenda. So having someone to back the performer is important.'
During her time at Channel 4, Hollick oversaw hit shows including It's a Sin, Help and The Gathering.
Along with Chalamet, Paltrow's sports drama — expected to be released in December — has a star-studded cast, including Fran Drescher, Tyler, the Creator, and Abel Ferrara. Paltrow plays the wife of Marty Reisman (portrayed by Chalamet), a professional table tennis player who won the US men's singles championships in 1958 and 1960.
'This woman is married to someone who is in the Ping-Pong mafia, as it were,' Safdie told Vanity Fair. 'They meet and she's had a pretty tough life, and I think he breathes life back into her, but it's kind of transactional for them both.'

EastEnders star Natalie Cassidy shuts down 'disgusting' false cancer hoax after fan concern: 'It is completely made up and a terrible story'

EastEnders star Natalie Cassidy has shut down the 'disgusting' false rumour that she has breast cancer. The actress, 42, took to Instagram Stories on Friday to debunk the cruel hoax, which had been shared in an EastEnders Facebook fan group. According to the story, the star had broken down in tears when she was given the diagnosis. Its headline read: 'Natalie Cassidy Breaks Down as She Reveals Breast Cancer Diagnosis: "I Didn't Want Anyone to Know…"' Slamming the fake story, Natalie wrote: 'THIS IS DISGUSTING AND DISGRACEFUL. So many people are going through this and I have had messages asking if I'm ok. 'It is completely made up and a terrible story. Take this down whoever you are.' The cruel rumour follows the actress leaving her long-running role as Sonia Fowler on the BBC soap opera in April. Before her exit she had been involved in an emotional storyline that saw her wrongfully accused of murder. It then emerged that her on-screen partner Reiss Colwell (Jonny Freeman) had actually carried out the terrible crime. She made her dramatic exit on a speedboat with sister Bianca Jackson (Patsy Palmer), daughters Bex (Jasmine Armfield) and baby Julia after locking her estranged father Terry Cant (Glen Davies) in a garage. Since leaving EastEnders, the actress has been busy with a host of other projects including a BBC documentary that follows her journey training to be a carer. She is also the host of the Channel 4 consumer show Britain's Best Buys. Natalie was a longtime feature of EastEnders, first stepping into Sonia's shoes way back in 1993 when she was just 10 years old. She is not the only soap star to recently be the subject of online rumours and Emmerdale's Lisa Riley has also been a victim. Lisa - AKA Mandy Dingle - was recently forced to issue a warning to fans about AI impersonators. Riley, 48, said in a video: 'If something is not on my page – and my page is blue-ticked – then it is not real. 'It is AI pretending to be me, and there is nothing I can do about it. 'It's a hoax, it's a scam and it's a lie. 'So please, I'm begging you, don't click on it, don't believe it, don't read it, don't give it any attention. 'It's not true.'

Fat Joe sued for $20,000,000 over claims of underage sex with minors

Reports from America say that Fat Joe has been sued for a whopping $20million (£14.8m) over claims of unpaid wages and underage sex with minors. The New York rapper, 54, whose real name is Joe Cartagena, rose to fame in the mid-to-late 90s as a solo performer and as a member of the Terror Squad. He landed his biggest UK chart hits in 2002 and 2005 when he teamed up with Ashanti for What's Luv? and with Jennifer Lopez for Hold You Down – both top 10 singles. Now, his former hypeman and stage partner of 16 years, Terrence Dixon – better known by his stage name T. A. – has filed a lawsuit against Cartagena in federal court. Dixon is alleging that Cartagena engaged in 'coercive labor exploitation, financial fraud, sexual manipulation, violent intimidation, and psychological coercion' – claims that Cartagena denies. Further reports (via Variety) indicate that the lawsuit also accuses the Feelin So Good rapper 'deliberately suppressed, silenced and erased Dixon's substantial creative, artistic, and commercial contributions'. The complaint, which is 157 pages long, has been filed in the US District Court, Southern District of New York, and contains a trigger warning in its contents. Dixon accompanied Cartagena on stages across the world for 16 years, often working up and energising the crowd before and during sets. During this time, he alleges, the Lean Back rapper forced him 'into humiliating situations, including sex acts performed under duress and surveillance, accompanied by threats of abandonment.' Cartagena is represented in the case by celebrity attorney Joe Tacopina, who has represented, among others, US President Donald Trump and rapper ASAP Rocky. 'The lawsuit filed by Tyrone Blackburn and Terrance Dixon is a blatant act of retaliation,' a statement from Cartegana's representatives began. '[It's] a desperate attempt to deflect attention from the civil suit we filed first, which exposed their coordinated scheme to extort Mr. Cartagena through lies, threats, and manufactured allegations.' The latest development follows Cartagena's filing of his own lawsuit against Dixon in April of this year, in which he claimed that his former hypeman had slandered him on social media. Claims are made in Dixon's suit that he was personally coerced 'into more than 4,000 sexual acts to maintain his standing' within Cartagena's musical enterprise. The most shocking claim made is that the hypeman 'personally witnessed [Cartagena] engage in sexual relations with children who were 15 and 16 years old.' Three Jane Does – a 16-year-old girl from New York, a 15-year-old girl from outside the USA, and another 15-year-old girl – are listed in the document. More Trending Dixon alleges that Cartagena 'contemplated leaving his wife' after 'falling in love' with the third girl, who it's claimed he met with just before she turned 16. The response from Cartagena's legal team continued: 'The allegations against Mr. Cartagena are complete fabrications – lies intended to damage his reputation and force a settlement through public pressure.' Dixon is credited as a musician and lyricist on several of Fat Joe's songs that were released around the late 2000s and early 2010s, specifically on the album Jealous Ones Still Envy 2. The hypeman – also known as Population One in the music industry – is said to be represented for the lawsuit by Tyrone Blackburn, who is currently lead counsel in the high-profile Sean 'Diddy' Combs case.
