New law allows water distribution at voting sites ahead of Election Day heat
NEW YORK (PIX11) — Ahead of the heat wave expected to blanket New York on primary Election Day, a new law may make it easier for voters to beat the heat while casting their ballot. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed new legislation on Saturday allowing voters to be given refreshments such as water and snacks at polling sites. More Local News The new legislation repeals a section of New York's election law that previously penalized people for giving items of small value, such as food and water, to voters at polling sites. 'Our democracy works best when every eligible voter has a chance to cast their ballot,' said Hochul. 'Providing water to voters waiting in line is a common-sense way to ensure New Yorkers have an easy, safe and secure experience in the voting booth.' More: Latest News from Around the Tri-State Under the signed bill, New York voters can be provided with items like water as long as those giving the items don't infringe on others' right to vote or discourage voters from participating in any given election. The move comes as parts of New York have been placed under an extreme heat warning or a heat advisory beginning Sunday. NYC could experience first heat wave of the summer: National Weather Service
NEW YORK (PIX11) — Get ready, New York City! Summer and its first heat wave are just around the corner. A heat wave is at least three consecutive days with temperatures of 90 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. More Local News Starting Sunday, temperatures will reach 92, then rise to 95 on Monday. Tuesday will be no better, as the temperature is expected to be 97. Wednesday will mark another day in the 90s. 'Heat waves can occur with or without high humidity. They have the potential to cover a large area, exposing a high number of people to hazardous heat.' NWS For New Yorkers without an air conditioner or a plan to stay cool during the heat wave, the New York City Emergency Management recommends beating the heat by checking out their NYC Cool Options locator. Beaches closed ahead of hot weekend in New York
NEW YORK (PIX11) — New Yorkers looking to cool off at the beach amid the summer heat may want to reconsider dipping in the water. There are several beaches either closed or under advisory over a high count of bacteria in the water due to recent stormwater runoff from all the rain in the area this week. More Local News Here's a list of beaches closed to swimming: Biltmore Beach Club – Massapequa Ronkonkoma Beach – Town of Islip Valley Grove Beach – Eaton's Neck Crescent Beach – Glen Cove Hudson Park – New Rochelle Harbor Island Beach – Mamaroneck Biltmore Beach Club will remain closed until further notice due to the high levels of bacteria, according to the Nassau County Department of Health. More: Latest News from Around the Tri-State These are the beaches park officials recommend staying away from due to higher levels of bacteria: Lattingtown Beach – Lattingtown Morgan Sound – Glen Cove North Hempstead Beach Park – Port Washington Pryibil Beach – Glen Cove Sea Cliff Village Beach – Sea Cliff Tappen Beach – Glenwood Landing The advisory for the beaches above will be lifted at 6 a.m. on Saturday, June 21, unless water samples continue to show high levels of bacteria.
