Stalin seeks rehabilitation for Madrasi Camp families

NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin has written to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, raising concern over the 'humanitarian crisis' caused by the demolition of the Madrasi Camp in Jangpura on June 1. The move displaced around 370 Tamil-origin families, many of whom had lived there for decades. DMK MP TR Baalu personally handed over the letter to Gupta on Friday.
In the letter, Stalin said that while 189 families were allotted EWS flats in Narela as per the Delhi High Court's order, the homes remain unfit for occupation due to lack of basic amenities like water, sanitation, and power. No transport facilities have been provided, leaving workers—especially women—unemployed and over 150 Tamil-medium children without school access. He also pointed out that 181 families remain entirely homeless. Stalin urged the Delhi government to complete and hand over the flats, provide necessary infrastructure, and relax norms under the Slum & JJ Rehabilitation Policy to support the rest.
He requested the immediate setting up of Tamil-medium education facilities and transport. Stalin expressed hope the Delhi administration would respond with compassion and reaffirmed TN's willingness to assist in the dignified rehabilitation of displaced families.

The controversy deepened following reports that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, initially scheduled to attend, had cancelled his visit. Despite this, prominent political and religious figures are still expected. Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and actor-turned-politician Pawan Kalyan is among the invited dignitaries. The Lord Murugan Devotees' Conference is a large-scale religious congregation initiated by Hindu Munnani to celebrate the faith and devotion surrounding Lord Murugan, a revered deity in Tamil Hinduism known for his valour, wisdom, and divine grace. 3,634 differently-abled persons to be nominated to local bodies soon: CM MK Stalin

CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin on Saturday announced that a total of 3,634 persons with disabilities will be nominated to local bodies immediately, for which the application process will commence at the district level on July 1. Addressing the felicitation event organised by different organisations of PwDs at the renovated Valluvar Kottam to thank the CM for the representation provided to disabled people in local bodies, he said this will include 650 persons to urban local bodies and 2,984 persons to rural local bodies. It was the first event to be organised at the Valluvar Kottam, after it was renovated at a cost of Rs 80 crore, which included a conference hall with a seating capacity of around 1,400 persons. During the budget session of the Assembly in April, suitable legislative amendments were passed to enable the representation of 13,357 PwDs to all levels of local bodies through local bodies. Before coming on stage, Stalin visited the renovated campus, including the landmark chariot structure that was beautified with lights. Speaking to a packed crowd of PwDs, the CM said, 'A committee has been formed with district collector as head. A PwD will also be a member of the committee. Those who are nominated can take part in the local body meetings. Similar to the elected representative, nominated PwD will also be given honorarium.' Regarding the renovation of Valluvar Kottam, Stalin said, 'Kalaignar laid foundation stone for this 'cultural treasure' in 1974. AIADMK generally abandon the projects of DMK. They would not maintain the buildings, memorials built by us. Similarly this Valluvar Kottam, which was left without maintenance, has been renovated with renewed splendour.' He also appealed to the associations for PwDs to work jointly with the government and said all should grow as an inclusive society.

PMK leader Anbumani slams Centre over EWS reservation

CHENNAI: PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss on Saturday criticised the union government for granting 10% reservation to the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) among forward castes, despite their (forward castes) total population in India being just 7% and only 0.5% of them falling under the EWS category. Calling it a grave injustice to backward communities, he urged the Tamil Nadu government to immediately conduct a caste-based census to facilitate the restoration of the 10.5% internal reservation for the Vanniyar community. Speaking at the centenary celebrations of yesteryear leader V Aanaimuthu, who fought for social justice, Anbumani recalled the veteran's tireless efforts in securing 27% reservation for backwards classes across India. He announced that PMK would install a statue of Aanaimuthu to honour his contribution to social justice. Training his guns on the ruling DMK, Anbumani alleged that backward communities were being used merely as a vote bank. 'Despite meeting the chief minister (M K Stalin) five times over the past four years and seeking 10.5% internal reservation for Vanniyars, the government has failed to take any concrete steps in this regard,' he said. He accused the DMK's legal team of mishandling the case, leading to the court striking down the quota. While the 10% quota for EWS continues, a similar internal reservation for Vanniyars was quashed, he pointed out. Anbumani also criticised CM Stalin's claim that the state lacks powers to conduct a caste census, calling it 'a blatant lie'. 'If Karnataka, Bihar, and Odisha could carry it out using state powers, why not Tamil Nadu?' he questioned. The PMK would soon launch a massive protest demanding a caste census in Tamil Nadu, he warned, adding that proper data are crucial to ensure education and employment opportunities reach the most deprived communities.
