BREAKING NEWS Haunting update in hunt for siblings aged four and six who vanished into wilds of Nova Scotia

Daily Mail07-05-2025

Police in Canada have announced they are dialing back the search for two young children who vanished from their home last week.
Jack Sullivan, 4, and his sister Lily, 6, were last seen about 10am on Friday on a road close to their home in Lansdowne Station, Nova Scotia.
Their parents believe the kids went out a sliding back door of the family's home while stepfather Daniel Martell and mother Malehya Brooks-Murray fed their baby.
At a press conference on Wednesday, Staff Sgt. Curtis MacKinnon said the search for two is now being scaled back.
MacKinnon added 'we're not packing up and we're not giving up', saying that all missing persons files remained 'suspicious until our investigation leads us to determine otherwise'.
'Many of us have children of our own and want nothing more than to reunite Lily and Jack with their loved ones', he added.
Brooks-Murray last week begged for their safe return in an emotional TV interview after searching the neighborhood for them.
'I'm just staying as hopeful as possible,' she told CTV News in an emotional interview.
'I want them home. I want to hold them, and I want them home. When they're found it will be the biggest relief to hug them.'
Brooks-Murray explained that she and Martell thought the children were playing, and they sneaked away the short time the couple were occupied.
'We always make sure that we're out there with them, watching them, and they happen to just get out that sliding door, and we can't hear it when it opens,' she said.
'They were outside playing, but we weren't aware of it at the time, and the next thing we knew it was quiet.
'We get up and look outside. We're looking everywhere, yelling for them, and I instantly just called 911. I just had the instinct I needed to call.'
Brooks-Murray said her children may have mild autism but were friendly, contrary to rumors online claiming they were non-verbal.
'They're both really happy-go-lucky children. They're so sweet. They talk to anyone. They'll talk your ear off. They will speak to anyone in a store, everyone. They're just extremely sweet kids,' she said.
The distraught mother questioned why an Amber Alert wasn't issued, but police said there was no reason to believe they were abducted.
Martell told CBC News on Sunday that he was frightened the children were taken by a stranger.

Mum's tearful plea for help finding her son Darren Garwood after he vanished without a trace almost a month ago

A Perth mother has fought back tears as she begged for help finding her missing son after he vanished without a trace in bushland almost a month ago. Darren Garwood, 38, left a home in Sawyers Valley, east of Perth, on the morning of Sunday May 25. He had been driving a white Ford Ranger utility with registration SW18692 when police believe he travelled deep into bushland south of the Great Eastern Highway. Mr Garwood's mother, Cecelia McCarron, said she was desperate for answers. 'Not knowing where he is, is extremely, incredibly hard for us,' Ms McCarron told reporters on Friday. 'As his mother, and also his father and the rest of our family, I'm pleading if anyone has any information, whether from before his disappearance or at any point over the past four weeks, we would be so deeply grateful for your help. 'His last known location was somewhere in the Mundaring area, possibly within the national parks - anywhere between Mundaring and York. 'So please just help us bring him home.' Mr Garwood's bank account and mobile phone haven't been accessed since he disappeared. Police are concerned he wasn't carrying enough resources for an extended time in the bush. Sergeant Tania Mackenzie said aerial and ground searches for Mr Garwood, including along bush tracks in the Mundaring area, had yielded no sign of him, leading officers to believe he had gone off the beaten path. 'It is unusual, we know Darren spoke to family on the Saturday night, late in the night, and is normally in contact with family and friends, so it is unusual, and hence our concerns for his welfare,' Sgt Mackenzie said. 'All we can ask is that people look out for his car, that's our best chance, (for) someone to see his white Ford Ranger in that bush land, and (for people to) just to be cognisant of the fact that he's probably gone deeper into the bushland, rather than just on tracks.' Officers are not treating Mr Garwood's disappearance as suspicious.

Two hikers killed by major rockfall on popular trail in Canada

Two people have been killed and another three injured when a major rockfall crashed onto a group of hikers on a popular Rocky Mountain trail in western Canada. The accident happened on Thursday near the Bow Glacier Falls in Banff National Park, about 225km (140 miles) north-west of Calgary, Alberta. The area is known for its natural beauty and is particularly busy in summer. The first victim was a 70-year-old woman from Calgary. In a joint statement, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Parks Canada said a second body had been recovered early on Friday. No more people have been reported missing. Local resident Niclas Brundell, who was hiking on the trail, estimated that about 15 to 20 people were standing to the right of the falls when he and his wife noticed small rocks tumbling down. Alarmed, the two of them ran from the area. 'I turned round and saw basically a whole shelf of a mountain come loose,' he told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. 'We just kept sprinting and I couldn't see the people behind us anymore because they were all in that cloud of rock.' Andy Dragt, an organizer for a local hiking club, told the Globe and Mail newspaper that one of its members had been killed in the rockfall. Around 10 club members had been present, he said, declining to identify the dead person.

Chilling footage emerges after boy, 3, is killed in 'tragic accident' at horse racing event in Canada

A three-year-old boy was tragically killed after being struck by a starting gate during a horse racing event in Canada. According to reports, the boy - believed to be Gunnar Dickison - was hit by the gate as it was being towed by a pickup truck last Saturday. In chilling YouTube footage, the truck can be seen leading the horses round the track to start the race before the announcer shouts: 'There they go!' Around the same time, a crashing sound can be heard off-camera - prompting a couple of the jockeys to turn around - before screams ring out. 'What just happened?' the announcer asks. Audio then briefly cuts out. 'We need an ambulance, call an ambulance please, to the grandstand folks,' the announcer says. 'If there's a doctor on the grounds anywhere to the grandstand please, right away.' At this stage, police believe the incident is a 'tragic accident'. First responders headed to the Connell Park Raceway in Woodstock, New Brunswick, around 1:25pm local time. The three-year-old was rushed to a nearby hospital but medics were unable to save his life, according to CBC. 'It does appear, based on the initial information from some people that we've got, that it is a tragic accident,' Deputy Chief Simon Watts of the Woodstock Police Force said in a news conference, per CBC News. 'We know nowadays, everyone's got a cellphone camera, so if we can obviously get clarification on where the incident actually took place and the details of it, and there's a few questions with regard to closeness of the gate.' According to CBC, cops would not comment on whether anyone will face charges over the boy's death. Starting gates are used to ensure horses begin a race from the same point. Authorities in Woodstock have announced an investigation into the incident in a bid to avoid further tragedies. They also offered 'condolences to all those affected' by the 'unimaginable loss.' Watts revealed that the New Brunswick Coroner's Services and the Atlantic Provinces Harness Racing Commission would be conducting their own probes. 'As many of you know, there was a tragic accident last night at our racetrack. The Woodstock Driving Club is now accepting donations to help support the family with the unexpected expenses during this incredibly difficult time,' the track wrote on Facebook alongside a sketch of a boy with the message: 'Love you always Gunnar!' Meanwhile, Dr. Mitchell Downey - president of Horse Racing New Brunswick - said: 'The entire racing community is deeply saddened by the tragic events of June 14.
