49ers GM provides positive update on injured WR's recovery from ACL
Before the 2024 season started, the San Francisco 49ers gave wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who had been holding in for a new deal, a four-year, $120 million extension, that made him one of the highest paid players in the league at his position.
However, after just seven games and 25 receptions for 374 yards, Aiyuk tore his ACL and MCL against the Kansas City Chiefs, ending his season and putting the start of his 2025 campaign in jeopardy.
With San Francisco also trading wide receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders for a fifth-round selection (used on Oregon running back Jordan James) in the 2025 NFL draft, Aiyuk's recovery is very important for the team's immediate success.
Late last week, 49ers general manager John Lynch appeared on "The Pat McAfee Show" and gave a positive update on Aiyuk's rehab process as organized team activities came to a close.
'Brandon's doing a tremendous job coming back," Lynch said. "These guys that are incredibly skilled athletes, they tend to heal a lot faster. It's kind of incredible how well he's healing, and he's putting in the work. We're proud of Brandon, and we're looking forward to him being part of this team moving forward. We made a big investment in him. We're proud to have him part of our franchise, and looking for big things from him. And we're gonna let him get right before we get him back on that field. But he's an important part of this team.'
Aiyuk's been one of the best receivers in the league since San Francisco took him in the first round (No. 25 overall) of the 2020 NFL draft out of Arizona State. In 69 career games over five years, he's caught 294 passes for 4,305 yards and 25 touchdowns while being the team's second or third target, behind Samuel and tight end George Kittle.
If he's not good to go for Week 1, recently-extended quarterback Brock Purdy could be stepping on the field with Ricky Pearsall, Jauan Jennings, Demarcus Robinson and Jacob Cowing as his top four wideouts. That's not exactly ideal for a team that's looking to crawl out of the basement of their division and make it back to the postseason in 2025.

Rafael Devers notched his first home run with the Giants, a solo blast in the third inning that helped pace the Orange and Black to a 3-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday. It was the only hit Devers had but it was a pivotal blow on an afternoon where offense was scarce for both teams. Advertisement Heliot Ramos also went deep to even the series between the two teams. Devers has been welcomed with open arms since the Father's Day trade landed his powerful bat in the Bay. The slugger had put together some strong at-bats but hadn't been able to really get into one until Saturday when he hit a two-run drive off Red Sox starter and former teammate Brayan Bello. Devers' homer came two batters after Andrew Knizner reached base on an error. The Giants didn't do much else offensively but made the scoring stand up with a solid day from their bullpen. After starter Landen Roupp pitched six strong innings, manager Bob Melvin used three relievers to mop things up. Advertisement Randy Rodriguez and Tyler Rogers each threw a scoreless inning before closer Camilo Doval pitched in and out of a jam in the ninth. Here are the takeaways from Saturday's win: Devers Drives It Of course Devers' first home with the Giants came against his former ballclub. It was straight out of a Hollywood movie script. Six days after being acquired from Boston in a deal that included Kyle Harrison and Jordan Hicks, Devers gave Giants fans what they had been eagerly waiting for since his arrival with an opposite-field home run. It was Devers' second extra-base hit and second RBI in five games with the Orange and Black. Predictably, he received a standing ovation from the Oracle Park crowd as he crossed home plate. Roupp Rebounds Nicely Nearly two weeks after his worst outing of his career Roupp bounced back with one of his best stats of the season. Advertisement The Giants' right-hander pitched six scoreless innings and allowed only three hits – the fewest Roupp has given up in any of his 15 starts this season. He has six strikeouts and three walks before giving way to reliever Randy Rodriguez. It was exactly the type of game that the Giants needed from Roupp after he gave up six runs and retired only five batters in an 11-5 loss to the Dodgers on June 8. Dicey Day For Doval The days of Torture are back whenever the Giants' close takes the mound. Saturday was just the latest chapter in Doval's roller-coaster season. Doval gave up three consecutive hits to open the ninth, allowing the Red Sox to score a pair of runs and avoid being shut out. Advertisement Just when things looked like they were going to go the wrong way, Doval gathered himself and recorded three consecutive groundouts to earn his 12th save of the season. Devers was acquired from Boston on Sunday. He delivered his first long ball for the Giants in the third inning on Saturday after he went hitless in his first six at-bats in the series. Advertisement Devers sent an opposite-field drive off Brayan Bello (3-2) over the left-field fence for a two-run shot that happened to be caught by a fan in a Red Sox T-shirt. Devers got loud cheers from the big crowd in San Francisco as he rounded the bases for his 216th career home run that gave San Francisco a 3-0 lead. Devers was traded by Boston less than two years into a 10-year, $313.5 million contract extension that he signed in 2023. Heliot Ramos also homered for the Giants, who won for just the second time in their last seven games. Key stat Devers became the 10th player to homer for and against the same team in a seven-day span, according to Sportradar. The last player to do it was Abraham Toro, who homered for Houston against Seattle on July 26, 2021, and then for the Mariners against the Astros the next day.
