Bruins GM didn't look for validation from players during coach search
BOSTON — Don Sweeney had a big decision to make this offseason when it came to the Bruins' new coach.
After talking to about 14 candidates, the general manager landed on Marco Sturm. The German-born forward will be Boston's third coach in as many seasons.

The Bruins missed the playoffs in 2024-25 for the first time in nearly a decade. The team struggled to find consistency — especially offensively — and Sweeney his decision on who to name the next coach would be a crucial one.
During Sturm's introductory press conference on Tuesday, Sweeney was asked whether he sought the input from players. And while he said he discussed with them characteristics during exit interviews, the conversations didn't go further than that.
'During the process, I did not run a particular name or style by our players,' he said. 'I think our players innately want to be coached. They want to have an understanding of how they're going to be coached, and they value the same things we organizationally value: Communication, respect and culture.
'I wasn't looking for validation from our players in any way, shape or form from deciding who the coach was going to be,' Sweeney later added. 'I want them to understand that Marco's in charge, and we think we've picked a really good coach, and they're going to go to work.'

Sturm is familiar with the Bruins, though most of his former teammates have retired. The 46-year-old was traded to Boston in 2005 as part of the deal that sent Joe Thornton to the San Jose Sharks. The forward scored 106 goals during his tenure, but perhaps none more memorable than his overtime game-winner in the 2010 Winter Classic at Fenway Park against the Philadelphia Flyers.
Even though this is Sturm's first NHL head coaching job, Sweeney is confident he can help turn the team around and get them back into the playoffs.
'Marco went through some of the things that he felt that we had done well but things that we had gotten away from and where the league is at and where the league is heading to,' Sweeney said. 'It's all important parts of it, and the player development part of it was certainly a big part of those conversations and how you do integrate the players and when they're going to be ready and having connectivity with your minor-league program.'

When Buster Posey conducted his first San Francisco Giants shakeup on June 4, the team won seven straight. San Francisco's top baseball official then stunned the industry by acquiring slugger Rafael Devers on June 15, but the Giants have since lost four of five. Friday, the Red Sox — who dealt Devers away five days earlier — came to Oracle Park and stayed hot, earning their eighth win in nine games by downing San Francisco 7-5. The Red Sox's top home-run threat was, until Sunday, Devers. Friday, they got blasts from David Hamilton, a two-run shot in the third, and in the sixth, a solo homer by Ceddanne Rafaela that provided the winning margin. Devers got a standing ovation his first at-bat from the Giants' fans, and a lot of Red Sox fans, too, and in the third, he created a stir with a blast to left center, but Rafaela caught it just in front of the wall. Devers was 0-for-5 Friday and is 3-for-16 with two doubles, two walks and an RBI with San Francisco. The Giants had zero homers and went 2-for-10 with men in scoring position but they did interrupt a string of three consecutive games with just two runs scored by scoring three in the first two innings. Hayden Birdsong was the Giants starter and he had his worst start since joining the rotation in mid-May. He gave up the two-run homer to Hamilton, Boston's No. 9 hitter and a single run in the fourth. In the fifth, things just went south altogether. Rafael Devers goes 0-for-5 in first game vs. Red Sox since blockbuster trade
When the Boston Red Sox traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants, they did it knowing they would be facing their disgruntled former player in just five days. That game arrived on Friday. Taking the field only as a designated hitter, but with first base in his future, Devers failed to make his old team pay, going 0-for-5 at the plate in a 7-5 loss. He did receive a nice ovation before his first at-bat, though. Devers' hitless night wasn't for lack of balls in play. He managed to lift a ball to the left-field wall in the third inning, but was robbed of an extra-base hit by former teammate Ceddane Rafaela. Devers finished his night with his lone strikeout, swinging and missing at a 102 mph fastball from Aroldis Chapman. He is now 3-for-16 with one double four games into his Giants career. Devers met with reporters before the game to discuss the reunion, though he mostly indicated a desire to move on after a very public falling out with the Red Sox front office. Advertisement Devers was the longest-tenured player on the team and in the early years of a team-record of a 10-year, $313.5 million contract, but made his displeasure public in spring training when it became clear the Red Sox wanted to move him off third base in favor of new arrival Alex Bregman, a Gold Glover at the position. The matter appeared to settle when Devers agreed to transition to designated hitter — a potentially temporary move given that Bregman can opt out of his deal this winter — but the hurt feelings came beck when the Red Sox asked if he could cover first base after a season-ending injury Triston Casas. 'If they would have asked me at the beginning of spring training, yes, I would have played.' Advertisement Obviously, the Red Sox weren't going to ask Devers to play first base while Casas was still healthy. However, those comments show how much further this dispute went beyond a simple position change. As the Red Sox brass indicated the day after the trade, the conflict ultimately came down to communication and personality. In the meantime, Devers has been taking grounders at first base since he arrived in San Francisco, but won't make his debut at the position this weekend.

According to Zach Lowe, the Celtics have discussed landing the two-time champion from the Suns, re-routing Holiday to a new destination. "I've heard that there have been discussions of 3-team Durant related trades where Jrue Holiday moves somewhere," Lowe reports. The Suns have already been disappointed with the trade packages from Durant's top three trade options. Facilitating a trade with the Celtics to benefit both sides -- while moving the 15-time All-Star -- could make sense for Phoenix. With Devin Booker still in The Valley, Phoenix will be sure to make a move in their best interest, meaning the Celtics will have to outbid other suitors.
