Spain to invest over $3.3bln in cybersecurity as part of defense plan
Madrid, May 8 (UNI) Spain will spend about 3 billion euros ($3.39 billion) on developing cybersecurity as part of a new plan for the industrial and technological modernization of the kingdom's security and defense sector, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said.
"We are talking about an industrial and technological plan for security and defense ... What is planned to be done? It [the plan] provides for the allocation of 3 billion euros to combat threats by developing cybersecurity systems based on artificial intelligence and quantum computing, in which Spain, fortunately, is well versed," Sanchez said on Wednesday in a speech to the Congress of Deputies, the lower house of the parliament.
Spain faces more than a thousand cyberattacks on critical infrastructure facilities every year, Sanchez noted, adding that the funds will also be used to strengthen the army's telecommunications capabilities, create new communications satellites, modernize radar systems and introduce 5G networks.
As part of the overall defense plan approved by the government, Spain will increase defense spending to 2% of GDP in 2025, including by redirecting part of the funds from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. Total investment in security and defense next year will amount to 33.1 billion euros.

However, the amount of uranium enrichment detected was said to be much higher than what was needed for civilian use. Israel and the US have repeatedly said that Iran's nuclear program has always been intended for weaponisation, with US President Donald Trump stating that Tehran can never be allowed to have a nuclear bomb. Op Sindoor reflects inner strength of armed forces attained by practising Yoga: Rajnath
Jammu, June 21 (UNI) Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said that Indian Armed Forces displayed restraint, balance and precision during the operation, which is a reflection of their inner strength attained by practising yoga. Singh led the Armed Forces in celebrating the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY) by performing various asanas and breathing exercises with approximately 2,500 soldiers at Northern Command, Udhampur, in Jammu and Kashmir. In his address, he credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for popularising yoga globally and highlighted that the practice provides a holistic approach to health and well-being. He termed yoga a universal solution to the problems faced by people in today's fast-paced world, such as stress, anxiety and depression. 'Yoga gives clarity to the people in chaos. It is an art, a science, a philosophy, and spirituality. Those who practise yoga in their daily lives have control over their body and mind. It makes us proactive, not reactive,' Singh said. Describing Operation Sindoor as a shining example of that control, Rajnath Singh stated that the Indian Armed Forces displayed restraint, balance and precision during the operation, which is a reflection of their inner strength attained by practising yoga. He stated that India's social and communal unity was targeted through the Pahalgam terror attack, and Operation Sindoor was a clear message to Pakistan that it will face the consequences for supporting terror activities against India. 'Operation Sindoor is the natural progression of the surgical strike of 2016 and the air strike of 2019. It was executed in such a way that Pakistan requested a ceasefire, and only then did we put a pause to the operation. As I have said earlier, Operation Sindoor is not over yet. India is fully prepared to take all kinds of action against terrorism,' said Singh. He asserted that Pakistan wants to weaken India from within, but it should never forget that just like Major Somnath Sharma, Brigadier Usman too sacrificed his life for the unity and integrity of the country. He added that when the nation is celebrating International Day of Yoga, it should remember the true meaning of the practice, which is to connect every section of society with the culture and soul of India. 'If even one section is left behind, the wheel of unity and security is broken. Therefore, today, we should perform yoga at the level of society and thought and not just the body,' he said. Singh appreciated the inclination of the Armed Forces personnel towards yoga, which has a direct impact on their discipline and focus. "Yoga prepares a soldier physically and mentally, and its benefits can be seen on the battlefield," he said, encouraging the soldiers to continue practising it daily," said the defence minister. Reiterating Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement that 'Yoga is India's gift to the world', he stated that it is not just a diplomatic quote but a vision. Through yoga, India has given the world a tool which is beyond any border, religion, and culture, he said. Singh pointed out that the theme of International Day of Yoga each year – One Earth, One Health this year – sends a global message that India thinks not only for itself but for the welfare of the world. 'The whole world is a family, and working for it is a part of our thinking. Yoga is a practical expression of this thinking,' he said. He added that yoga is silently changing the world, and every citizen should be proud of the fact that India's ancient tradition is being recognised and accepted globally. He dubbed it as a responsibility to not just practice yoga as a trend but make it a way of life. 'There is a need to incorporate yoga as a resolution in our lives. It should be a part of our daily routine, as it brings positive changes in everyone's life,' he said while concluding his speech. The event was attended by Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Northern Command Lt Gen Pratik Sharma. All the participants witnessed the Prime Minister's speech on IDY 2025, which he delivered during the main event from Visakhapatnam. MEA revokes denial, grants Priyank Kharge clearance for US visit
Bengaluru, June 21 (UNI) In a sharp turn of events, Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge on Saturday said the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has revoked its earlier decision and granted him clearance for an official visit to the United States, five days after his scheduled departure and following public outcry. Taking to social media platform X, Kharge wrote, 'So in a U-turn, the Ministry of External Affairs has now decided to revoke its earlier decision and grant me a clearance for an official visit to the United States.' Kharge said he had applied for permission on May 15 to travel between June 14-27 to represent the Karnataka government at two major global forums and participate in over 25 official meetings with top companies, universities, and institutions to pitch for investments and explore collaborations. The minister highlighted that his initial delegation request was rejected, while subsequent applications — first for officials and later for the KEONICS chairman — were approved, showing a selective clearance process over three separate submissions between May 15 and June 14. Kharge said no official explanation was provided for the denial of his own application. On June 19, he held a press conference highlighting the chronology and alleging political interference. By the same evening, the MEA issued a fresh No Objection Clearance dated June 19, effectively reversing its earlier stance. '36 days after my original application, 15 days after the denial, and five days after my scheduled departure, they 'revoke' their decision,' he noted, questioning the timing and intent behind the clearance. He further asked, 'Why was the clearance denied in the first place? Was it revoked only after the matter became public? What is the point of a clearance after the key events are over?' Criticising the Centre, Kharge said while the Union Government promotes slogans like 'Make in India', 'Digital India', and the 'India AI Mission', it is states like Karnataka that are driving real progress. He alleged that despite leading on innovation and job creation, Karnataka is being obstructed politically. Referring to the Prime Minister's statement, MAGA + MIGA = MEGA', Kharge asked, 'What does that even mean in practice, when the very state driving India's tech and innovation engine is denied the support it needs to lead globally?'
