UAE residents plan holidays around sporting events, Hyatt survey finds
Forty-five per cent of UAE residents would plan an entire holiday around a sporting event, a new report finds.
The research, conducted by Perspectus Global during March 2025 among 2,100 UAE respondents, found that individuals plan to participate in an average of 12 sporting activities and attend seven events as spectators over the next year.
UAE sports travel boom
According to the survey commissioned by Hyatt, 45 per cent of UAE residents say attending live sporting events is one of life's pleasures, and 30 per cent would travel thousands of miles to experience an event.
Additionally, 27 per cent say they would pay a premium to stay in a hotel that enhances their event experience, from location and amenities to atmosphere.
Football remains the most travelled-for sport at 52 per cent, but interest in cricket (29 per cent), cycling (28 per cent), swimming (27 per cent), and bodybuilding (21 per cent) reflects a sports culture across the region.
Stephen Ansell, Managing Director Middle East and Africa, Hyatt, said: 'Sports-tripping is reaching fever pitch, and we are increasingly seeing more travellers, with a passion for building their holidays around watching live sporting events, stay in Hyatt properties. Whether people are discovering a new destination, or revisiting a firm favourite, travelling to watch sporting events offers the perfect opportunity for fans to enjoy a unique event as well as the wider experiences a city has to offer.'
The survey found that 52 per cent of respondents say proximity to sports venues is a factor when booking a hotel, whilst 30 per cent are inspired to stay in hotels frequented by athletes or sports teams. One in three value onsite facilities or access to fan zones.
Hyatt has observed a shift across its regional properties, where travel is centred around sporting events.
Travellers seek stays that support their performance and well-being, from proximity to venues and recovery facilities, to nutrition dining and spaces designed to support performance.
F1, football fuel UAE's hotel boom
Events like Formula 1 and football fixtures have driven occupancy levels across Dubai and Abu Dhabi, indicating that sport has become part of the region's identity.
The desire to travel extends beyond the spectator experience. Two in five UAE residents say they love travelling to take part in competitive sports. For many, these trips are about personal health and fulfilment as much as competition.
Whether it's maintaining fitness routines (40 per cent), developing discipline (33 per cent) or spending time with family and friends, these journeys help people redefine what it means to relax.
Travellers blend movement with meaning, creating holidays where sport, well-being, and connection intersect.
The mindset influences business travel. 42 per cent of UAE respondents say the ability to practise sport during a work trip is an incentive, and 40 per cent try to combine attendance or participation in sporting events with business schedules.
Whether it's squeezing in a morning swim, catching a match after meetings, or joining a cycling group between conferences, professionals aren't abandoning their well-being goals whilst travelling, the report said.

Ras Al Khaimah's hotel inventory expected to increase from 8,321 to 15,798 keys by 2030
Ras Al Khaimah's hospitality infrastructure is expected to continue its strong growth path, with hotel room supply projected to reach nearly 16,000 keys by 2030, a report showed. Stirling Hospitality Advisors' RAK Investment Pulse report highlights key areas for development, including laundry, F&B supply, logistics, procurement, and staff housing, which will be essential for sustaining the Emirate's continued tourism growth. According to the report, 7,427 new hotel rooms are confirmed for delivery by 2030, on top of the 8,321 rooms already in operation, with more than 5,000 keys currently under discussion. This expansion reflects Ras Al Khaimah's strong tourism outlook and underscores investor confidence in its long-term development strategy. It also signals the need for targeted investment in hospitality infrastructure to ensure operational systems scale alongside guest-facing assets. Tatiana Veller, Managing Director of Stirling Hospitality Advisors, commented: 'As Ras Al Khaimah's hospitality market enters a new era of growth, it's vital that support infrastructure keeps pace. Operational systems such as laundry, logistics, and staffing are essential to delivering high-quality guest experiences. The report is a timely reminder to investors and stakeholders that strengthening these areas is key to long-term competitiveness, and the opportunity to scale with the market growth is abundant.' The report, now in its fifth edition, finds that many hotels in RAK continue to depend on suppliers located outside the emirate, not atypical for the overall UAE market. Most finished food and beverage items, including bottled water and frozen bakery items, are sourced externally, primarily from Dubai, which adds to transportation costs and logistical inefficiencies. Additionally, 86% of hotels outsource their laundry operations, with many relying on service providers located in neighbouring emirates. Workforce infrastructure remains another area to pay attention to. While more than 60% of casual staff are currently sourced externally, the demand for dedicated staff housing is projected to exceed 16,000 units by 2030. Vocational training facilities are an additional potential facilitator of growth. Hotel operators also reported strong interest in a centralised procurement and logistics hub, with over 85% stating it would improve operational efficiency, reduce emissions, and streamline supply chains. The emirate's business community has been actively at work to localise the supply chain. To support the next phase of exponential growth, the report outlines several priority investment areas, including scalable laundry facilities, cold storage and procurement hubs, and purpose-built staff housing zones. These developments would reduce operational overheads, enhance service quality, and align with the Emirate's broader tourism and sustainability goals. Commenting on the report, Alison Grinnell, CEO of RAK Hospitality Holding, added: 'RAK Investment Pulse fills a crucial need for reliable information and insights. As RAK is building its history and legacy, this newsletter is a way for the world to stay updated on the remarkable growth and development in this dynamic Emirate.'

Jordan: Cabinet approves transport commission restructuring, green hydrogen projects
AMMAN — The Cabinet, during a session chaired by Prime Minister Jafar Hassan, approved on Sunday a proposal by the Ministry of Transport to proceed with the restructuring of the Land Transport Regulatory Commission to define the complementary roles, responsibilities, and coordination mechanisms between the ministry and the commission. Under the proposed framework, the government would study the establishment of a Board of Commissioners for the commission, modelled after the Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission, according to a Prime Ministry statement. The move is intended to bolster the commission's independence, improve governance, and strengthen its economic and service-oriented functions, with necessary legal amendments to follow, the statement said. To support public transportation operators, the Cabinet also endorsed the allocation of JD4.1 million to subsidise operational costs for the period from June through the end of 2025, in accordance with international fuel price trends. The Land Transport Regulatory Commission and the Ministry of Finance have been tasked with devising an implementation mechanism. The Council of Ministers also endorsed exempting Syrian buses entering Jordan from fuel support charges (diesel), at a rate of JD80 per bus carrying more than eight passengers. The exemption is contingent upon mutual measures by Syrian authorities and is expected to benefit transport operators on both sides. In the tourism sector, the Cabinet approved the justifications for the 2025 draft regulation on tourist guide services, as well as a draft amendment to the 2025 Tour Guides Association bylaw. Both drafts would be forwarded to the Legislation and Opinion Bureau for legal review and ratification. The Cabinet also instructed the Ministry of Water and Irrigation and the Jordan Valley Authority to set a ceiling of 4,000 dunums for land leases in the Wadi Araba region for investment purposes. 'Exceptions for larger areas may be granted in justified cases based on the nature and feasibility of the project, pending prior approval.' The Cabinet also approved allocating 770 dunums in the villages of Ghamr and Umm Mathla for food security projects implemented by the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army. As part of its commitment to improving healthcare services, the Cabinet also approved the continuation of procedures for establishing a new comprehensive health centre in Ajloun. The project would adhere to national standards for primary and comprehensive healthcare facilities. The prime minister had announced the project during a Cabinet session in Ajloun in April, noting that the JD1 million facility is expected to be completed in 2026. The Council of Ministers also approved an agreement between the Ministry of Local Administration and UN-Habitat to implement an urban greening and afforestation project in Sahab, Zarqa Governorate. The two-year project is valued at approximately $1.1 million. As part of the government's strategic National Water Carrier Project, the Cabinet approved a 30 million euro investment grant agreement between the Jordanian government and the European Investment Bank, funded by the Dutch government. The funding would support the Aqaba-Amman water desalination and conveyance project. In the energy and mineral resources sector, the Cabinet allowed the National Petroleum Company to retain JD3.4 million in dues owed to the Treasury for 2024. The funds would be directed towards drilling 80 new wells in the Risha gas field, with the goal of increasing natural gas production. The government also approved two land-use agreements, one with Jordan's Philadelphia Solar and the other with Germany's Enertrag, to conduct feasibility studies for green hydrogen production projects. "These are part of the government's broader strategy to position Jordan as a regional hub for green hydrogen," the statement read. With these agreements, the number of approved land-use deals for hydrogen development has reached six, out of 13 memoranda of understanding previously signed with leading energy companies. The six firms have completed preliminary feasibility studies and technical reports and are now advancing to the land allocation stage, the statement said. During this phase, companies will carry out detailed measurements of renewable energy sources to prepare final feasibility studies. Investment decisions will be based on these outcomes, the statement said. To support economic activity and ease the financial burden on businesses, the Cabinet approved exemptions from fines, fees, and additional charges for companies and individuals who settle their outstanding payments to the Income and Sales Tax Department through instalments. The Cabinet also endorsed the recommendations of the Settlement and Reconciliation Committee to resolve 900 pending tax cases involving companies and individuals with financial obligations under the Income Tax and General Sales Tax Laws. In a move to boost trade and investment, the Cabinet endorsed a request to establish a duty-free market on the quay of the new port operated by Abu Dhabi Ports Company in Aqaba. The market would operate under the regulations and conditions outlined by the Special Free Zones Committee.

UAE Team Emirates power to double win with Tour de France looming on horizon
UAE Team Emirates-XRG warmed up for the Tour de France in style after securing a double European triumph over the weekend. At the Tour de Suisse, Portuguese rider Joao Almeida snatched victory from overnight leader Kevin Vauquelin by winning the Stage 8 time-trial in clinical fashion. Almeida overturned a 33-second deficit to leapfrog Vauquelin to secure the title by finishing one minute and seven seconds ahead of the Frenchman in the overall standings. Austrian Felix Gall finished 25 seconds behind Almeida on the day with Scotsman Oscar Onley third (+1min 11sec) and Vauquelin fourth (+1min 40 sec). It was a second straight stage victory – and third in total – for Almeida who admitted to nearly blowing the final stage. 'I think I started too fast,' the 26-year-old said after the closing 10.1km uphill time-trial. 'I over-paced in the beginning. In the end, I hoped to have enough gas to push in the last kilometre, but in the end it was not necessary. 'It's a lesson: you should never give up,' added Almeida, who also triumphed at the Tour de Romandie in May. 'Sometimes things go wrong and nothing is perfect, but you need to keep trying. We kept trying and we did it.' Meanwhile, Filippo Baroncini sealed his first general classification triumph at the Baloise Belgium Tour, defending his overall lead on the final flat Stage 5 in Brussels. The Italian moved into the violet leader's jersey after Stage 4 in Durbuy and secured the title after finishing four seconds ahead of British rider Ethan Hayter (Soudal Quickstep), with the Belgian Jenno Berckmoes (Lotto) a further three seconds back in third. 'I came into the race in good shape from the Giro, so I knew if things went our way this week something was possible,' said Baroncini, 24, who saw teammate Sebastian Molano take second place on the final stage. 'The goal was to win with the team because Florian [Vermeersch] was also flying. 'Stage 4 was a great stage for me, the group stayed away, and while I didn't win the stage, I was able to take the crucial time I needed in the GC. 'The team worked perfectly to defend the jersey so it was an excellent week overall.' The double success meant UAE Team Emirates reached a major milestone by sealing a 50th win of the 2025 season with the Tour de France – set to begin in Lille on July 5 – looming on the horizon. Leading the UAE charge will once again be Tadej Pogacar, who is looking to seal his fourth crown. And the Slovenian looks in ominous form having just beaten old rival Jonas Vingegaard to win his first Criterium du Dauphine title, a victory that left Pogacar 'super happy and proud'. 'We can go home happy to prepare for the Tour,' said the 26-year-old after finishing in the French Alps. 'A lot of positives and all the negatives will turn into positives so it's all good.' After securing a superb triple crown last season, there has been no signs of any let up from Pogacar in the current campaign which has seen him win the UAE Tour, Liege–Bastogne–Liege, Tour of Flanders, Strade Bianche, La Fleche Wallone and now the Dauphine. And Almeida will now turn his attentions to helping his superstar teammate retain the Tour title. 'I'll have time to enjoy this win and I'll be ready for the Tour de France,' he said on Sunday. 'I'll support Tadej Pogacar there and hope we can get more great wins.'
