Narendra Modi-led Government addressed problems facing health sector with ‘holistic' view: Amit Shah
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday (June 20, 2025) lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government for its 'holistic' approach in addressing health issues faced by the public.
He was speaking after inaugurating the Adichunchanagiri University (ACU) Bengaluru campus.
'Our leader and PM Modi had said several years ago in Gujarat that poverty's biggest issue is illness and the cost of treatment; the administration has to provide for the treatment of illness for the poor. I can say with pride today that Modi, when he became the Prime Minister, fulfilled it by providing 60 crore poor with free treatment up to ₹5 lakh,' Mr. Shah said.
The Modi Government has addressed the problem of health with a holistic view, with initiatives like building toilets in about 12 crore houses through the Fit India movement, Yoga Day, Mission Indradanush, Poshan Abhiyaan, Ayushman Bharat, and Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana, he added.
'In a way, it is being ensured that a citizen doesn't fall ill from the time he/she is in the mother's womb until the person becomes a complete citizen, and in case the person is ill, he takes treatment without paying a higher price for it,' he added.
Major efforts were taken to increase the number of doctors in the country, Mr. Shah said. In 2014, the country had 7 AIIMS, and today there are 23 AIIMS, and the number of medical colleges has increased from 387 to 780.
'There were 51,000 MBBS seats then (2014); today it is 1,18,000, and the number of PG seats was 31,000; today it is 74,000. So, 1,18,000 MBBS doctors and 74,000 double graduate doctors are coming out every year in the country,' he added.
Union Minister of Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy, Union Minister of State for Railways and Jal Shakti V. Somanna, and Nirmalanandanatha Mahaswamiji of the Adichunchanagiri Math were present.

Guest Column: Yoga is India's gift to the world for wellness
Yoga, an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition, offers a holistic approach to health and well-being, encouraging inner peace and balance in a rapidly changing world. The theme of the 11th International Day of Yoga is: Yoga for One Earth One Health. It inspires a unified movement, transcending geographies, cultures, and professions. Thanks to the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the acceptability of yoga has been enhanced to the extent that it is practised as a way of life and has given India a unique recognition before the international fraternity. On September 27, 2014, in his address to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), PM Modi proposed to dedicate June 21 as the day to celebrate yoga across the world. Less than three months later, on December 11, 2014, 193 members of the UNGA and 173 co-sponsor countries unanimously approved the resolution, which agreed that yoga offers a holistic approach to health and well-being, and that widespread promotion about its benefits is necessary for the global population's health. Ten years later, UNGA president Dennis Francis underscored its significance by terming yoga 'a powerful metaphor for the United Nations itself', underlining the power of yogic practices in addressing the physical and mental health problems of the modern world. The mass participation stands testament to the fact that the world has now accepted and is celebrating yoga. A remarkable 24.53 crore people participated globally, social media recorded 3.48 crore engagements, community radio reached to 26 lakh participants, and 177 UN member nations extended their support to India's initiative. Internationally, Indian embassies and yoga institutes engaged around 5.45 lakh people. Shaping yoga economy In today's fast-paced world as yoga supports physical and mental health, it has witnessed tremendous growth over the past decade by finding a way into the hearts and homes of millions across the world. No surprise, a new yoga economy is creating fresh employment opportunities with the growth of yoga tourism, the establishment of yoga retreats and resorts, and the booming market for related apparel and equipment. As of 2023, over 30 crore people practise yoga worldwide. That number keeps climbing, and it's fair to assume that future datasets will show an increase in practitioners and professionals. This expanding ecosystem directly contributes to a demand for skilled professionals, a need being actively addressed by government initiatives. Potential for growth The global yoga industry, including classes, teacher trainings, retreats, and products, is now worth more than $88 billion. Government initiatives promoting AYUSH education and training are fostering a skilled workforce, meeting industry demands. The AYUSH sector is likely to generate nearly 30 lakh job opportunities in the near future. India has over 7,55,780 registered AYUSH practitioners, reflecting the country's strong foundation in traditional systems of medicine and holistic healthcare. The Skill India Mission, through the Beauty & Wellness Sector Skill Council (B&WSSC) under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), had trained 1.3 lakh students as yoga instructors and trainers as of 23 June, 2022. The AYUSH department has established the Yoga Certification Board for yoga practitioners. Over 100 major institutions in India and 10 from abroad have been granted certifications from this board. Expansion of Ayush With government support, India's Ayush market which was $2.85 billion in 2014 has gone up to $43.4 billion in 2023 and exports doubled from $1.09 billion to $2.16 billion. The ever-growing entrepreneurial ecosystem has led to the growth of MSMEs in Ayush from 38,216 in August 2021 to 53,023 in January 2023, an increase of about 40% in a year. The startups are also booming in this sector is booming with the number of DPIIT-recognised startups reaching 900 in December 2022. As Ayush methods are creating business opportunities all over the country, 52% of these startups are from tier 2 and tier 3 cities, creating about 8,500 jobs. Looking ahead Both yoga and Ayush can be promoted among the youth as a career option with global opportunities. Indian universities could offer professional degrees or certifications that can prepare such professionals. Yoga needs to be promoted as preventive wellness tool which focuses on developing a healthy lifestyle. Teaching yoga should made part of the school curriculum. The Indian medical fraternity is among the largest in the world. Indian doctors have global reputation and today they are practising all around the world therefore it is important to make medical professionals yoga ambassadors. International Yoga Day has become a global public health movement with millions of people across the globe embracing yoga and making it a part of their daily lives. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday (June 20, 2025) said the health sector in the country had seen a 'remarkable transformation' in the last 11 years with the Centre adopting a 'holistic and inclusive' approach in addressing public health issues. Speaking after inaugurating the Bengaluru campus of Adichunchanagiri University and BGS Medical College and Hospital in Bengaluru North Taluk, Mr. Shah said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for the health sector has significantly benefited the people, especially the marginalised and weaker sections of society. High cost of treatment 'The Prime Minister had said in Gujarat 26 years ago that the main challenge faced by the poor is illness and the high cost of treatment. The administration has to make healthcare accessible to the poor. I can say with pride today that after becoming the Prime Minister, Mr. Modi fulfilled this promise by providing 60 crore people from the poor and weaker sections of society with free medical treatment of up to ₹5 lakh under the Ayushman Bharat scheme,' Mr. Shah said, adding that health has been addressed holistically. 'While toilets for 12 crore households have been built, the Fit India Movement was launched to inculcate a healthy lifestyle among people. Various other initiatives such as International Yoga Day, Mission Indradhanush to provide free vaccinations and Poshan Abhiyan to provide care for mothers and children were introduced. Through the promotion of generic medicines, people are now able to buy medicines at just 20% of their original cost at 15,000 outlets,' he said. The Union Minister pointed out that the number of All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have grown from seven in 2014 to 23 now and medical colleges from 387 to 780 in the country. MBBS seats have increased from 51,000 to 1.80 lakh, and postgraduate medical seats from 31,000 to 74,000. 'This means 1.18 lakh new MBBS doctors and 74,000 postgraduate doctors are graduating every year, compared to just 50,000 earlier,' he noted. State's medical education Karnataka's Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil said the State has the highest number of Medical Education seats in the country. 'There are 70 medical colleges in the State, including 24 government colleges,' he said. 'Allowing private participation in Medical Education was a landmark decision. By establishing engineering colleges, we created an ecosystem that helped Bengaluru emerge as the IT capital. However, there is still a shortage of doctors. Around 24 lakh students appear for NEET each year, competing for only one lakh seats,' he said. 'India must promote the establishment of more medical colleges, and I have conveyed this to Mr. Amit Shah.' Union Minister of Heavy Industries and Steel H.D.
