Toyota welcomes Comrades winner Gerda Steyn as official ambassador
Toyota SA Motors has announced Gerda Steyn as its new brand ambassador for the next three years. The announcement was made at the 98th Comrades Marathon on Sunday, where Steyn was crowned winner in the women's category.
The qualified quantity surveyor is a four-time Comrades marathon champion and one of the most accomplished ultra-marathon athletes in the world, holding records for the Two Oceans (six times) and Comrades Marathon down run and up run.
Steyn's running career kick-started at the Comrades Marathon in 2015 where she finished in the 56th position. As part of her ambassadorship Steyn will be paired with the Toyota Fortuner SUV.
'Toyota SA Motors is proud to support athletes who embody determination, resilience and a global sporting spirit. To this effect, Toyota's partnership with Gerda is the beginning of new and exciting adventures,' said Tasneem Lorgat, GM marketing communications at Toyota SA.
The company said Steyn's appointment reaffirmed Toyota's commitment to supporting sports as a tool for nation-building and social cohesion — values linked to its historic 21-year support of the Comrades Marathon.
Commenting on her appointment, Steyn said: 'To represent Toyota — pioneers and leaders in the motoring industry — is a huge honour. I look forward to this long-term partnership with a name that stands head and shoulders above the rest.'

Wanderers veteran earns Comrades triple green number
Long-time Wanderers Athletics Club member Mark Hoffman crossed the finish line of his 30th Comrades Marathon on June 8, earning the coveted triple green permanent number, a milestone that reflects three decades of grit, sweat, and heart. Hoffman's running journey started with a dare at the Long Bar after a few pints back in 1993. What followed was a lifelong passion marked by over 165 marathons and ultra-marathons. After 11 hours and 41 minutes on the road, Hoffman crossed the finish line with tears of joy, cheered on by his wife Estelle, his steadfast supporter for 23 of the 30 races. Now, looking ahead to the 100th Comrades in 2027 and his 30th Two Oceans, Hoffman says he might take a break, but his story is far from finished. Roodies runner completes 30th Comrades
Finishing the Comrades Marathon is an achievement in itself, but Johan Breydenbach from Roodepoort Athletics Club has taken this feat to unprecedented heights, earning a remarkable 30th medal in this iconic ultra-marathon on Sunday, June 8. The 60-year-old made his way to the finish line in an impressive time of 10:56:15, a full two hours before the 12-hour cut-off time. Johan's Comrades journey began in 1985 when he was just 20 years old, running under the South African Police Services Athletics Club. He took a short break and joined the Roodepoort Athletics Club in 1999 and has since completed 24 consecutive Comrades Marathons. Also read: Roodies host braai-send off for Comrades athletes His dedication and hard work have earned him a permanent green number with three laurel leaves (one laurel for 10-19 finishes, two for 20-29, and three for 30 or more), symbolising his incredible achievements. 'Comrades is my passion, and it's a lifestyle that I have dedicated myself to,' Johan says. 'Anyone who runs and finishes the Comrades can tell you what an incredible feat it is to make it to the finish line. I'm thankful to God that at my age, I'm still able to use the talent and skills of running that He gave me.' Receiving his permanent green number holds great significance to him, not just as a personal achievement but also as a family legacy. 'What's also special is that it can be used within the family, but I've told my grandkids that anyone who wishes to run with my number must be dedicated and needs to run 30 Comrades,' he shared. With a personal best time of 09:45:00 and a collection of mostly bronze and platinum medals, his goal is to complete 35 comrades. 'I will thereafter decide if I want to continue or not.' Toyota's Japanese insurer files R6.5b lawsuit against KZN government
TOYOTA South Africa Motors' (TSAM) Japan-based insurer, Tokio Marine and Nichido Fire Insurance Co. Ltd, is suing the KZN Department of Transport (DoT), Transnet and the eThekwini Municipality for R6.5b for the unprecedented damages faced by Toyota's Prospecton branch following the devastating April 2022 floods. Also read: Floods hit Prospecton industries hard The insurer filed a summons in the Durban High Court against the three defendants, with the plaintiff's court papers stating the defendants had failed in their duties of maintaining the key infrastructure meant to safeguard the Prospecton Industrial Area from flooding. It is stated within court papers that Transnet owned the Umlaas Canal and was therefore responsible for its maintenance, management, and responsible handling of the flood risk associated with it. The canal, which is lined with concrete, channels and diverts the Umlazi river around the Prospecton Industrial Area. Together with the diversion berm, which falls on the Department of Transport to maintain and manage, it forms a vital part of the flood control and prevention for the area. In addition, it states responsibility for the stormwater management system falls on the eThekwini Municipality. 'As a result of these failures, Toyota was compelled to engage various contractors to repair the damage caused by the flooding and hired specialist engineers to repair the structural damage to the premises, as well as damage to electrical installations, plumbing, air-conditioning and assembly systems,' it said. The damages, which amounted to over R6.5b, included almost R4.5b for the costs incurred during the repair and reinstatement of the premises and property, and over R2b for the losses incurred during business interruption. He said, 'We have agreed to sustain our relationship. We will do that in the interest of the people of KZN and the whole country. Over the years, we have worked well with Kirby and executive vice president of TSAM, Nigel Ward, manufacturing, and Toyota. We agreed that nothing should come between us and this enduring relationship. The current litigation is not being facilitated or funded by TSAM, and it does not benefit in any way from the subrogated recovery action against us. We have no doubt that Toyota will continue to be the most preferred brand in the country. One cannot over emphasise the contribution the motor car industry had made to our economy.' eThekwini Municipality spokesperson Gugu Sisilana said the municipality was aware of the court action and had filed a notice to defend. Transnet's media desk issued a brief response, saying it is aware of the litigation initiated by Toyota insurers and has filed a notice to defend. It further stated that given the early stages of the case, it would be premature to offer further substantiation. The April 2022 floods Following the trail of carnage left by the April 2022 floods, heavy rainfall and landslides in KZN, President Cyril Ramaphosa declared a national state of disaster. Toyota's Prospecton plant was ravaged by the floods, and the business was left with around 4300 flood-damaged vehicles, nearly 90% of the cars on site. The automotive giant reported that over 100 000 new equipment parts needed replacing. Astonishingly, after three months of intense repairs and support from the company's Japanese head office, production resumed in August 2022. Following this, TSAM invested over R200m to prevent disasters of similar magnitude going forward, and over R100m was dedicated to establishing monitoring and maintenance systems to proactively guard against water ingress. These included an early-warning weather monitoring system, construction of perimeter canals, and significant upgrades to the site's stormwater network. An additional R128m was spent on internal interventions to protect the facility even if external systems failed.
