Taimoor, Dalia tame rivals to clinch tennis titles

Taimoor Ansari and Dalia Ashraf tamed their respective rivals to clinch the mens and ladies singles titles respectively as the inaugural ISDIN Tennis Championship concluded at the DA Creek Club Karachi on Wednesday evening.
Taimoor was stretched to the limit by Mahateer Muhammed in the final, the two players matching each other stroke for stroke. However, Taimoor, with his superior skills on the day, emerged as the winner with scores of 6-4,0-6, 11-9.
The ladies singles final was also a well contested affair with Eschelle Asif giving a tough time to Dalia Ashraf. Both the players displayed high class tennis before Dalia emerged victorious by 9-7. In the under-13 singles final, spirited tennis was seen from Meer Abbas Bhagat who outplayed Syed Abdullah 4-1,4-1 to win the title. The event was hosted under the auspices of Karachi Tennis Association
Shahrukh Khursheed, Director Operation COSMO Group, was the chief guest at the closing ceremony and distributed cash awards worth rupees 200,000 among the winners and runners up of all the five events.
In his speech, Shahrukh thanked KTA and Managment of DA Creek Club for professionally and excellently organizing the tennis championship.
He added that ISDIN is a world renowned brand and world number one Alcaraz who recently won the men's singles title at French Open is its brand ambassador. He also announced to hold the National Tennis Championship later this year in winter.
Khalid Shamsi, Moulana Hafiz Abdul Majeed and Dr.Quratul Ain, Vice President Sindh Karate Association, also spoke to the sizeable audience at the closing ceremony. They all praised the excellent organisation of the Championship.
Muhammad Khalid Rehmani, SVP STA thanked the sponsors and Creek Club management and media for their fullest support to promote tennis in country. He disclosed that 100 plus entries were received for five events. He added that KTA/STA will hold three Nationals in July during summer vacation and one in the month of August in Karachi. Director Sports, Commissioner Karachi's office, Ghulam Mohammad Khan was also present on the occasion among other guests.

Alcaraz wins testing Queen's opener
Carlos Alcaraz came through a testing first-round match against Australia's Adam Walton at Queen's on Tuesday as the top seed returned to action for the first time since his dramatic French Open triumph. The Spaniard, back on grass for the first time since winning his second Wimbledon title last year, beat his 86th-ranked opponent 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) on a sweaty day in west London. Alcaraz, who overcame Jannik Sinner in a five-set thriller at Roland Garros just nine days ago, broke in the seventh game and went on to clinch the first set against lucky loser Walton, who replaced Alejandro Davidovich Fokina after the Spaniard withdrew due to illness. The 2023 Queen's champion appeared to have found his rhythm only for Walton to rally impressively, carving out two set points on his opponent's serve in the 10th game. Anderson to captain Lancashire
Lancashire will be captained by James Anderson in their next two County Championship matches, with the 42-year-old stepping into an interim role due to Marcus Harris returning to Australia for the birth of his child. Anderson has only played once in the Championship this season, after a calf injury ruled him out for the first six weeks, but has been in good form in the Vitality Blast. He is set to lead the side against Kent in Blackpool starting on Sunday, in what will be his first experience of captaining a professional XI. Anderson will become Lancashire's third red-ball captain this summer, with Harris having succeeded Keaton Jennings after a difficult start to the season that also cost Dale Benkenstein his job as head coach. "Jimmy [Anderson] will lead the side and it is exciting for him and us," Steven Croft, Lancashire's interim head coach, told the BBC. "He has captained only once and that was in a pre-season tour T20 game in Dubai so it will be nice for Jimmy and nice for the lads. "He has obviously got a lot to offer on and off the field. It will be a proud moment for him. It is not obviously all on Jimmy but it helps and his presence, particularly as captain, is a massive boost for the rest of the lads." Lancashire are currently second from bottom in Division Two, having drawn five and lost two of their seven games, but they have enjoyed a successful start to the Blast, winning four of six to sit third in the North Group. Anderson has played his part, returning to the format after more than a decade and taking ten wickets in four matches. The Blast will break after Friday's fixtures for two rounds of the Championship, with Lancashire facing Kent at home before a trip to play Derbyshire at Chesterfield. Harris will miss both games, but Lancashire will be able to call on Australian overseas signings Ashton Turner and Chris Green.
