Wortley Pride hoping for peaceful event this weekend
Wortley Pride president Kathy Bell and her wife Denise Copeland, also a Wortley Pride board member, took time Friday afternoon to stroll across the freshly painted Pride crosswalk at Wortley and Elmwood.
They're getting set to spread their message of acceptance.
'When we had our very first Wortley Pride festival four years ago, there was a lot of protestors and a lot of violence took place here. So, this crosswalk signifies true self-authenticity, and the ability to be who you are, where you are, when you want to be,' explained Bell.
'I would just say, 'you know what, don't judge 'till you know what we do, 'till you see what we do,' added Copeland. 'We're just getting together and showing love, and bringing out families, so they can just be together and have fun,' she said.
The fourth annual Wortley Pride festival goes this weekend, celebrating the Pride community and its allies.
The inaugural Wortley Pride was held in 2022, and every year since, it has been marred by protests, vandalism or violence.
Wortley resident George Cruickshank said villagers won't tolerate such behaviour.
'We have no patience for that, for people who object and cause trouble,' said Cruickshank.
Many businesses have gone all-in on Pride festivities. Jessy Deroneth, at Quarter Master Natural Foods, says she's all about promoting positivity.
'We can't really focus on the negativity, so we try to foster positivity as best as we can. We try to just be involved in ways we can, to actually help peoples' lives,' said Deroneth.
Bell says they're taking safety precautions at this year's event- something they've become accustomed to.
'And the protestors always come and attend. And we do expect them this year, but we have taken the necessary steps to make sure everyone is going to be safe. So, police will be present, and there will be also undercover, as well as in-person.'
Festivities begin Friday night with a drag show at the Delta Armouries in downtown London, followed by family events on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Green in Wortley.
'And I would say, once you set foot on the ground, you know you are safe, because we are here, we are queer, and we're not going anywhere,' said Bell.

Cape Breton's Gordie Sampson marks 20 years since breakout album ‘Sunburn'
It's been two decades since Cape Breton's Grammy winning songwriter Gordie Sampson released his breakout album 'Sunburn.' The record not only launched him into Nashville's songwriting scene, it also earned him multiple East Coast Music Awards and a Juno nomination for Songwriter of the Year. Now, 20 years later, Sampson is re-releasing the album with a twist – full commentary from the artist himself. 'It's just like when you watch a movie and it's the director's commentary,' said Sampson in an interview with CTV Atlantic's Katie Kelly. The updated version gives fans a behind-the-scenes look at how the songs came to life and how Sampson himself remembers (or doesn't remember) it all. 'I had to call some friends, because I either didn't remember, blanked it out, or whatever,' said Gordie. 'Sometimes I lied. Sometimes I didn't know and just made it up because I make stuff up for a living. I mean, that's what I do.' Originally released in 2004, Sunburn featured the now-signature title track – a staple of songwriter circles ever since – as well as the songs 'Paris' and 'You (Or Somebody Like You),' which later found new life through country stars Faith Hill and Keith Urban. 'I put that out just as I was going to Nashville, and that record really kicked open a couple of doors for me down there,' said Sampson. To mark the milestone, Sampson is bringing the celebration back home to Cape Breton with a major show set for Aug. 3. 'The Red Farm show – August 3rd,' said Gordie. 'Myself, Dylan, Jodi Guthro, Bahamas, Sloan, my daughter Amelie is opening the show. It's gonna be super fun. Bring your RV, bring your beer, bring awesome.' Workers at gaming company Ubisoft Halifax file to unionize

Dozens of video game workers with Ubisoft Halifax have filed to unionize, according to the Communications Workers of America (CWA) Canada. A majority of the nearly 60 staff workers at Ubisoft Halifax, which has an office on Barrington Street, filed with the Nova Scotia Labour Board on Wednesday, according to a news release from CWA. 'Unionizing with my coworkers at Ubisoft Halifax is important to me so that we have the strength needed to protect what we have today and to fight for our tomorrow,' said senior server programmer Thomas Gillis in the release. 'With no end in sight to the industry-wide turbulence that sees studios shutter on releasing games fans love, it is up to us, the workers, to organize and demand a say in our labour, art and future.' Following certification, the union will include producers, designers, programmers, artists, researchers and development testers. According to its website, the gaming studio was founded in 2010 and became Ubisoft Halifax in 2015. Some of its games include Rainbow Six Mobile and Assassin's Creed Rebellion.
