No untoward incidents reported in Sabah's east coast in recent years, says Hajiji
KOTA KINABALU: Security in Sabah's east coast remains at the highest level, with no untoward incidents reported in recent years, says Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
The Chief Minister gave the assurance during a courtesy call by Malaysian Ambassador to France, Datuk Eldeen Husaini Mohd Hashim, at his office in Menara Kinabalu on Tuesday (June 3).
During the meeting, Hajiji also welcomed the rise in French tourist arrivals to Sabah, noting that France is now the third-highest source of European visitors to the state, after Britain and Germany.
'French arrivals in the first quarter of this year saw a 26.8% increase, reaching 2,116 visitors compared to 1,669 in the same period last year — and the number continues to grow,' he said in a statement.
Hajiji expressed confidence that proactive and aggressive promotion efforts would further boost French tourism to Sabah.
He and Eldeen also discussed strategic collaboration opportunities between Sabah and France, particularly in tourism, which they said would benefit the state and its people.
Eldeen, a Kuala Lumpur native, was appointed Ambassador to France in April 2024 and has held various key positions, including as Malaysia's envoy to Cambodia.
Also present were state Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, who is also Sabah Tourism Board (STB) chairman, STB chief executive officer Julinus Jeffery Jimit, Tourism Malaysia international promotions director Akbal Setia and Tourism Malaysia Paris director Zalina Ahmad.
To date, several countries — including the US, Britain, Canada and Australia — continue to maintain travel advisories cautioning against visiting eastern Sabah, particularly coastal and island areas, due to concerns over potential kidnappings and security risks.

'Each day of Regatta Lepa features a different programme, so we encourage everyone to come and be part of the celebration. Our government takes this event seriously, as it reflects a beautiful cultural heritage that we want to preserve and continue,' she said at a press conference following the launch of Regatta Lepa 2025 here Monday. She added that in addition to preserving culture, the festival also supports efforts to attract more tourists, which in turn benefits the local economy. Running from June 24 to 29, the festival features a programme of workshops, symposiums, traditional ceremonies and cultural performances designed to engage locals and visitors alike. Central to the event is the lepa, a traditional single-masted boat, elaborately decorated and paraded along Semporna's waters in a vivid celebration of Bajau craftsmanship. Among the highlights are the Regatta Lepa workshop and symposium at the Tun Sakaran Museum, the Sangom Maglami-lami community celebration and the Ratu Lepa 2025 pageant. Exhibitions by government agencies, local artisans and entrepreneurs will also provide opportunities for cultural exchange and economic growth. Earlier this month, the festival set a new Malaysia Book of Records milestone when 1,000 dancers performed the traditional Igal-Igal dance simultaneously during the IGALTHON event, adding to the festival's reputation as a vibrant celebration of heritage. The festival will culminate on June 29 at Dataran Regatta Lepa with a grand parade of ornately decorated lepa boats, followed by the Sangom Mairan evening event featuring an awards ceremony, cultural performances and a fireworks display.

Luang Prabang charts bold tourism vision to become regional standout

Deputy Governor of northern Luang Prabang province, Bounleua Sinxayvoravong told local media recently that the core of the plan is a sweeping improvement of tourism infrastructure and services designed to meet the expectations of both domestic and international travellers. From upgraded hotels and guesthouses to enhanced logistics and hospitality standards, the initiative seeks to boost visitor satisfaction, encourage longer stays and drive repeat visits to the internationally acclaimed town. The Laos-China Railway, which runs through the province, will be leveraged as a key transport route to drive the logistics and tourism industry. Bounleua stated that the province will promote investment in tourism-related businesses and develop new attractions to expand choices for visitors and enhance their overall experience. 'A key component of the plan is the development of Ngoy township, a popular destination, into a model of eco-tourism that celebrates natural beauty while also promoting environmental conservation.' 'In addition, Luang Prabang International Airport will be upgraded to meet global standards, enabling better access to neighbouring countries such as China and Vietnam, as well as key markets with potential like Japan and the Republic of Korea,' Bounleua said. The airport is set for a major upgrade under a public-private partnership. The Ministry of Public Works and Transport recently received prequalification documents from eight companies interested in bidding for the upgrade project designed as one of the key boosters to drive toruism in the region. Another feature of the plan includes establishing a new transport link with Dien Bien province in neighbouring Vietnam, which will help boost cross-border travel and strengthen the tourism network across northern Laos, Bounleua added.
