Leeds United opinion: Players and fans deserved a day in the sun
Pascal Struijk's 2019/20 Championship winners' medal hung around his neck at the open-top bus parade in Leeds yesterday – a reminder of the celebration that never was.
This squad were partying for two. And it felt like that.
An estimated 150,000 people were in Leeds, and the city was as full of fans and stories as it was thick with fog from flares and fireworks.
Club captain Ethan Ampadu's sweary performance on the microphone was instantly iconic and will be remembered for decades.
The Welshman did as much to etch himself into the hearts of Leeds fans in one afternoon as he has done on the pitch in the last two seasons.
But in United's history, no group of players has deserved a party more than this squad.
A record-breaking century of points; securing promotion by reaching near-perfection in games against Stoke and Bristol City; and winning the league with almost the last kick of the season in injury time on the final day.
For modern footballers: whose sleep and diet are tracked, whose every word is scrutinised, who are well-compensated, but make many sacrifices – it was wonderful to see them celebrate.
And the city and fans deserved a party as well.
The last time the glittering silver lady toured Leeds on a bus was 1992 – and there will be many who weren't there or were too young to remember it.
And unlike during the pandemic five years ago when United won the Championship and the unannounced open-top bus was static outside Elland Road, this time the parade had been announced, and the wheels were moving.
Leeds fans finally had their day in the sun.
And though the blue powder from flares has settled, and the smell from the smoke will wash out, the memories made in a couple of hours on a bank holiday Monday will last a lifetime.

Marcus Rashford sends Ruben Amorim message in 1st interview since Man Utd return
Marcus Rashford's future remains uncertain but he's poised to return to Manchester United for pre-season and has underlined his ability to play as a No 9 amid the club's search for a striker Marcus Rashford has admitted that being a central striker is "becoming more natural" as his career evolves - with Manchester United desperately looking for a new No.9. The 27-year-old is returning to Old Trafford after his loan stint away at Aston Villa. Rashford has endured a difficult time in Manchester and, after falling down the pecking order under Ruben Amorim, opted to move away temporarily. Villa had a £40million option to sign him permanently but that hasn't been exercised and Rashford faces an uncertain future. His dream move to Barcelona may now be off the cards - despite his thinly-veiled come-get-me-plea - and the forward appears to be selling himself as the central striker that United are looking for. Rashford has played predominantly from out wide during his career, but believes becoming a central option has been part of his career evolution. Those in Manchester have missed out on Liam Delap, one of their summer targets, whilst Viktor Gyokeres may favour other destinations. It could yet leave an opening for Rashford to stake his claim as the man to lead United's line - something he believes he's now capable of. He said: "For me as I've got older, the No.9 position is becoming more comfortable, more natural." In Rashford's most prolific season he scored 30 times. That was back in 2022/23 under Erik ten Hag. He's failed to hit those heights since but looked back to his best for periods during his loan spell at Villa, where he was able to dislodge Ollie Watkins as a stater. The main task for the academy graduate will be winning over Amorim. The Portuguese coach, who has signed Matheus Cunha and now wants Bryan Mbeumo, quickly shunned Rashford when he arrived and left him out of numerous squads. He later cited a difference of opinion as their main issue. He said: "I couldn't get Marcus to see the way you're supposed to play football and to train the way I see it. Sometimes you have one player that is really good with one coach, and the same player with another coach is different. I wish the best to Rashford and to [Villa manager] Unai Emery, and they can connect because he's a very good player." Before Rashford went on to rediscover his best form at Villa Park under Unai Emery Amorim admitted: "Sometimes you have one player that is really good with one coach, and the same player with another coach is different." Manchester United sent strong Amad exit demand after 'transfer agreement'
Amad Diallo was one of the standouts in a desperately dismal 2024-25 season for Manchester United, and amid shock suggestions he could become a makeweight for new signings, Louis Saha has made his feelings clear No matter what happens with Bryan Mbeumo, Manchester United MUST keep Amad at Old Trafford. That's the view of former United striker Louis Saha, who is a big fan of the young Ivorian winger. Mbeumo, 25, is all ready and has agreed to move to United if the Red Devils can seal a deal with his club side, Brentford. So far, United have seen two offers turned down by the London club, while Tottenham - who have just poached Bees boss Thomas Frank - have made a bid in excess of anything offered by United. Nevertheless, despite interest from Spurs, United are expected to land Mbeumo, with his preference to move to Old Trafford. He will join Matheus Cunha, who has already completed his £62.5m move from Wolves, with the pair both earmarked for key roles by Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese is sticking wholeheartedly with his 3-4-3 formation which is yet to bear fruit in Manchester, with the pair both set for starting spots as the twin No.10s, either side of a No.9. That means that Amad, one of few shining lights during a dismal 2024-25 campaign is likely to miss out on his preferred position on the right of the attacking trio. He may well have to drop back and play at wing-back if he wants to keep a starting spot, or else be a substitute. Speculation has risen however that he could in fact be cast aside and sold, as the club look to recoup funds. But Saha has urged United chiefs to do whatever it takes to keep Amad. "Nooo! No! No! If there are one or two players who should not leave, it is him and Bruno Fernandes," Saha told the Daily Express with BetSelect. "He is the kind of player who does not care where he plays. He has said it himself; he will play as a left-back or centre-back - he will just play." And as Saha backed Amad, he let rip at some of his Old Trafford team-mates with some very pointed comments. He continued: "Some other players will say, 'I want to play there' or 'I should be playing [in] this [position]'. Those players should shut up. Why? Because the result that we had last year is ridiculous. "If you have got 20 goals, you can ask those things, maybe. But none of those players have scored more than 15 goals, and they are asking for things. It is crazy." Premier League's first Chinese footballer now worth £20million after switching careers
Premier League's first Chinese footballer now worth £20million after switching careers Sun Jihai made history as the first Chinese player in the Premier League and he remains a cult hero with Manchester City fans for his displays during his six-year spell with the club Sun Jihai closes down Paul Scholes during a Manchester derby (Image:) A former Manchester City favourite is now worth a whopping £20million after becoming a business mogul. Sun Jihai made history during his six-year City career, becoming the first player from China to play in the Premier League and then the first player from East Asia to score in the English top flight when he netted against Birmingham City in October 2002. That came months after his arrival at the club, who won promotion to the Premier League under Kevin Keegan that year. It wasn't long before Jihai won over supporters with his total commitment on the pitch, clocking in 151 appearances before his exit in summer 2008, coinciding with Sheikh Mansour's takeover. The full-back's last City game was the infamous 8-1 thrashing by Middlesbrough at the end of 2007/08 season. A brief spell at Sheffield United followed before he returned to China in 2009, playing for several clubs and retiring in 2016. He elected not to go down the route of coaching and management. Instead, Jihai became a successful businessman, co-founding HaiQui [HQ] Sports, a sports data company, which set out to provide "datatainment" to fans. The tech company's other projects included a talk show that Jihai appeared on, a sports app called MiaoHi and a match prediction tool called Jihai App. Article continues below Sun Jihai with former Prime Minister David Cameron and Chinese President Xi Jinping during an engagement at the City Football Academy in 2015 (Image: Getty Images ) Jihai has turned his venture into a roaring success, attracting major investments from huge companies, including China Media Capital (CMC), which purchased a 13% stake in City back in 2015. Intrigued by the MiaoHi app – a sports video platform that enables stars and fans to connect – CMC, a company worth £60billion, chose to invest in the business. That investment, along with burgeoning interest in his other projects, has propelled Jihai's net worth to over £20million, according to PeopleWorthWiki. Despite his stratospheric rise in the business world post-retirement, Jihai still remembers his City days with great affection. Reliving an iconic goal against Birmingham in conversation with ex-colleagues Nedum Onuoha and Paul Dickov on City's website last year, he said the memory still triggers "goosebumps." Jihai has fond memories of his time in English football (Image: Manchester City FC ) On his move to City, he said: "Before I came to City, I didn't know the club. I only knew about United. Article continues below "City were in the second division, now the Championship. The agent told me we will go to the Premier League very soon. There were only two months of the season left. I was thinking, 'OK, second division, no problem, I'll join then.' "I had spent a season at Crystal Palace [in 1998/99] and I was always thinking I would like to go back to England. The Premier League, that was the league I wanted to play in."
