DC Anantnag inspects Nunwan and Chandanwari base camps, reviews Amarnath Yatra-2025 preparations
Anantnag (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], May 22 (ANI): The Deputy Commissioner of Anantnag, A F Hamid, conducted an inspection of the Nunwan and Chandanwari base camps on Thursday to review the progress of ongoing developmental works and preparations for the upcoming Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra 2025.
According to an official press release, the DC reviewed critical infrastructure projects being executed by various departments, including Jal Shakti, Public Health Engineering (PHE), Roads and Buildings (R&B), and other allied agencies.
He also inspected ongoing track clearance operations along the yatra route.
Special focus was laid on the readiness of essential facilities such as drinking water supply, sanitation, power supply, accommodation, and health care services.
All the stakeholder departments were instructed to ensure strict adherence to the set timelines and maintain close coordination for seamless execution of tasks.
The Deputy Commissioner emphasised the need to uphold quality standards while ensuring the timely completion of all works to facilitate a smooth and safe pilgrimage experience for devotees.
The Amarnath Ji Yatra is one of the most sacred pilgrimages in India, leading devotees to the Amarnath Cave located in the South Kashmir Himalayas.
Earlier this week, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah said the tourism sector has been badly affected and the administration is now focusing on ensuring a safe and incident-free Amarnath Yatra.
'Tourism has been hit quite badly. We hardly have any tourists coming in the summer season. We are now focusing on the Amarnath Yatra. We want the Amarnath Yatra to pass incident-free. We want the devotees coming for the Amarnath Yatra to go back safe and sound after their visit,' Abdullah said.
The Chief Minister was chairing a meeting with the Hoteliers Association at the Civil Secretariat. He held the meeting to discuss the concerns of the Hoteliers after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which had significantly impacted tourism in the region. (ANI)

Gorakhpur to Patliputra in just 7 hours as PM Modi flags off new Vande Bharat train
Patna (Bihar) [India], June 20 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday flagged off a new Vande Bharat Express through video conferencing from Siwan, connecting Patliputra Junction in Patna to Gorakhpur Junction in Uttar Pradesh. The train offers a new, fast, safe and convenient travel option between eastern Uttar Pradesh and northern Bihar. It will run six days a week (except Saturdays). Departing Gorakhpur at 5:40 AM, the train will reach Patliputra by 12:45 PM, and in the return direction, it will depart Patliputra at 3:30 PM and arrive in Gorakhpur by 10:30 PM. The Vande Bharat Express has a semi-high-speed capability which significantly reduces travel time. The Gorakhpur to Patliputra journey, which earlier took 10 to 12 hours, can now be completed in just 7 hours. As per the Indian Railway, the route of this train includes stations in Uttar Pradesh -- Gorakhpur, Kaptanganj and Paniyahwa -- and in Bihar -- Bagaha, Narkatiaganj, Bettiah, Sagauli, Bapudham Motihari, Muzaffarpur, Hajipur and Patliputra. This train is a strong example of Prime Minister Modi's commitment to the 'development of Eastern India,' working to bring previously neglected areas into the mainstream. With this new addition, Bihar now has 13 and Uttar Pradesh 15 Vande Bharat trains, enhancing rail connectivity. The Patliputra-Gorakhpur route connects districts such as Patna, Vaishali, Muzaffarpur, East Champaran, West Champaran, Kushinagar and Gorakhpur. This improves access to trade, tourism, employment opportunities and educational and healthcare services. Currently, 71 Vande Bharat trains operate across the country. Recently, the Prime Minister also launched a new Vande Bharat train to Jammu and Kashmir, ensuring year-round high-speed connectivity in the region. The train features air-conditioned coaches, automatic doors, bio-toilets, a GPS information system, onboard catering, Wi-Fi, and CCTV security. These amenities provide a premium and comfortable experience that was previously unavailable in regular trains. Vande Bharat trains are especially beneficial for senior citizens, students, and women. Automatic doors and CCTV cameras ensure security, while its punctual schedule helps passengers reach their destinations on time. PM Modi also flagged off a state-of-the-art locomotive built at the Marhowra Plant, for export to the Republic of Guinea, under the 'Make in India' initiative plant became the first export locomotive manufactured in this factory. They are equipped with high-horsepower engines, advanced AC propulsion systems, microprocessor-based control systems, and ergonomic cab designs, incorporating technologies like regenerative braking. To boost railway infrastructure in the region, the Prime Minister inaugurated the new Vaishali-Deoria railway line project, worth over Rs 400 crore, and flagged off a new train service on this route. J-K conducts flood mock drill in Pahalgam to bolster Amarnath Yatra preparedness
Pahalgam (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 20 (ANI): The Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Department conducted a mock drill simulating a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) scenario in Pahalgam on Friday. The exercise was held in coordination with the Anantnag District Management Authority and saw participation from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Indian Army, and other emergency support and line departments. The exercise aimed at enhancing preparedness for the Amarnath Yatra will start on July 3. It tested response mechanisms for disasters like floods and accidents, critical for the safety of over 4.5 lakh pilgrims who visited the Amarnath cave shrine last year. The Deputy Secretary of the J-K Disaster Management Department, Snober Jameel, while speaking to ANI, stated, 'It is a very significant and important pilgrimage for us. So, before that, too, it's crucial that we ensure people are already prepared. Given the extreme weather events we are witnessing nowadays--like cloudbursts and other types of events--we must be prepared in advance. We have already implemented preparedness and preventive measures. For prompt response, we have already trained our staff.' The Deputy Secretary stated that the initiative aims to tackle potential disasters in advance, highlighting the region's vulnerability due to numerous glacial lakes in the Himalayas. She said, 'This initiative is by the J-K Disaster Management Department. This mock exercise has been organised in collaboration with the Anantnag District Management Authority. GLOF hazards are a global issue, as we know, and especially in the Himalayan region, where there are many glacial lakes. The approach of the Disaster Management Department and the J-K government has always been that we should be prepared in advance to tackle any disaster.' She said that the drill aims to sensitise and mobilise response forces, including the SDRF, NDRF, and the Army. 'This initiative has been taken to conduct a mock exercise specifically for GLOFs, so that all response forces--be it SDRF, NDRF, the Army, Emergency Support Function departments, line departments, our administrative personnel, and other disaster managers--can be sensitised and mobilised. This is being done to implement preparedness measures and demonstrate the practical steps that need to be taken for a response. The idea is that if we face any such disaster in the future, we are fully prepared.' (ANI)
