Severe weather rolls through SE Michigan, thousands left without power
The entire Metro Detroit area withstood some strong storms Sunday evening with severe thunderstorms accompanied by high winds rolled through the area.
While rain is expected to continue throughout the evening, the strongest remaining storm clusters are in St. Clair County and around Port Huron - with the worst over for most of Metro Detroit, said FOX 2 Weather Authority Rich Luterman.
Numerous reports have been made of downed power lines with some trees toppled as well in Metro Detroit after storm sirens were heard alongside swirling wind and pouring rain earlier tonight.
Storm lines rolled through at about 65 miles per hour. Wind gusts were measured more than 50 mph with penny-sized hail. In Jackson, Michigan, a 95-mile-per-hour gust was recorded.
Some power outages have been reported according to DTE Energy. According to the DTE Outage Map, about 26,000 customers are out of power as of 8 p.m.
Keep at least 25 feet away from any downed power lines and anything they are in contact with — consider them live and dangerous.
North of Grand Rapids there are unconfirmed reports of a possible tornado near Ashland, Michigan.

More than 8,000 Southeast Michigan customers remained without power Thursday morning in the aftermath of storms that brought heavy rain, high winds and at least one tornado to the region. No injuries were reported from the storms. Most southeast Michigan electricity customers get their electricity from DTE Energy, which is showing over 8,000 outage reports on its online maps. Only a few outages for southeast Michigan were shown on the Consumers Energy online map. The site, which curates power outage numbers against state and county maps, also showed 8,053 outages across Southeast Michigan, with most of that number in Wayne and Oakland counties. The National Weather Service plans to do a storm survey Thursday, but has confirmed that a tornado touched down near 14 Mile Road in Macomb County Wednesday afternoon. The damage in the Fraser area includes downed trees and some flooding. With that, Michigan has had 29 tornadoes so far in 2025, the sixth highest in the state's history. June is usually the peak time of tornado weather in Southeast Michigan. Looking ahead, a heat wave is in the forecast. Closings and reschedulings Because of the federal holiday of Juneteenth, some banks and many government offices including the Michigan Secretary of State branches were already expected to be closed for the day on Thursday. The Detroit Tigers will host a double header Thursday with the Pittsburgh Pirates, as Wednesday's game was canceled due to the weather situation. St. Clair Shores Parks and Recreation canceled Wednesday's Music on the Lake concert and plans to reschedule. And Birmingham's Summer Concert in the park for Wednesday was canceled.

Tornado threat expands into parts of Michigan
A tornado watch was extended into Southwest Michigan early afternoon, specifically the counties of Berrien, Branch, Cass and St. Joseph where the watch will be in effect into 8 p.m. ET. There were waves of heavy rain and storm weather early in the day, including some strong thunderstorms that came through Oakland County in the early afternoon. June is considered the peak tornado season in Southeast Michigan. Watch vs. warning The National Weather Service says a severe weather watch means "be prepared." It is possible that weather will reach severe levels during the time frame specified. A severe weather warning means "take action," that severe weather conditions have been reported by spotters or can be detected on radar. People are asked to take shelter indoors, away from windows. Severe weather so far in 2025 2025 is already one of the busiest years for tornadoes in Michigan since modern record-keeping began in 1950. There were 28 tornadoes confirmed so far, including an outbreak in mid-May. So far, 1974 holds the top spot with 39 confirmed tornadoes, followed by 2001 with 35 confirmed tornadoes, according to CBS News Detroit's NEXT Weather team. Power outage reports Most electricity customers in southeast Michigan get their power from either Consumers Energy or DTE Energy. Both companies have online outage maps where people can look up the status of their neighborhood. "Our Storm Response Teams are ready to restore power as quickly and safely as possible," a DTE notice posted ahead of the storms said. "Please be safe and remember to stay at least 25 feet from any downed power lines — assume they are live and dangerous. Report any outage or downed line here."

GLWA advisory warns pumps could be impacted by power issues
The Brief A new GLWA advisory says pumps might be impacted by power issues. It included guidelines for removing valuables from the basement. DETROIT (FOX 2) - There are new flooding concerns after the Great Lakes Water Authority revealed power problems that might compromise it's' pumping system. The backstory "I still have a very clear memory of going to my basement, opening the door - looking down the stairs and seeing five feet of water and simply closing the door because I could not believe what was going on," Allison Heeres. Heeres, a Jefferson Chalmers resident, said she does not want a repeat of history. "I saw somebody go by my porch in a canoe in the middle of the night while I sat there and worried about what was happening here," she said. A new advisory from the Great Lakes Water Authority is asking residents to remove valuables from basements and a request that homeowners do not run washing machines and dishwashers during heavy rain. That message comes with more rain in the forecast. GLWA says it is operating out of an abundance of caution in the unlikely event of a failure. " I just got a new washer and dryer so after this announcement, I'm going to make sure that it's high enough up," she said. "A lot of people in the neighborhood have to make sure that they can address the issue at hand." Heeres is also the owner of Coriander Kitchen and Farm Restaurant in the same neighborhood. Like many in the area, she is concerned about ongoing DTE Energy power problems impacting GLWA's Water Resource Recovery Facility and pumping stations. The restaurant doesn't have a basement but many homes in the area do. "Myself, all my neighbors, everyone, we lost everything in our basement," she said. "People are talking about 'Oh you know what are you gonna do now?' I actually don't have that much to move out of my basement because I lost everything the first time and I just got out of the habit of storing things down there, but that's not awesome." GLWA updated the situation in a statement to FOX 2 that reads: "The Water Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF) remains fully functional, and GLWA continues to stay in communication with DTE Energy as they repair their equipment and work to restore full triple power redundancy to the facility. GLWA successfully weathered last night's storms and is currently dewatering the system. "Furthermore, GLWA continues to develop response strategies for the unlikely event of a complete outage at the WRRF. Given the current forecast and system levels, GLWA is planning to implement its response measures to mitigate, to the extent possible, negative impacts on the regional system service area." Heeres is hoping for the best especially long term."Living in Jefferson Chalmers we live within the canals, within the water systems and it seems like between the statewide authorities, the local authorities and the utilities, there doesn't seem to be enough collaboration or insight in order to get us past all of these challenges that we are going to be continuing to face due to global climate change," she says it is acting out of an abundance of caution - saying while a total failure is unlikely. They can't predict what parts of the system will be affected, as that would depend on real time weather patterns.
