368 trees, some over 100 years old, in Bengaluru's Cantonment area at risk for railway project: Report
A proposed commercial development project by the Railways in Bengaluru's historic Cantonment area has sparked public outcry after it was revealed that 368 trees, many of them over a century old, are slated to be felled.
According to a report by The New Indian Express, the trees include heritage species such as Peepal, Rubber, and Christmas trees, all located within the Bangalore Cantonment Railway Colony in Vasanth Nagar.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Forest Wing has issued a public notice inviting objections to the project, which has been proposed by the Railway Land Development Authority (RLDA), under the Ministry of Railways. The application for tree felling was submitted by the RLDA's Joint General Manager(Projects/Expert), seeking clearance to proceed with the plan, the report added.

BBMP Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF), BLG Swamy, said the notice was published last Friday. "Members of the public have 10 days to raise objections, give suggestions, or share feedback about the proposal. Based on the volume and nature of objections, the Forest Wing will communicate with the Railway Department. If the public strongly opposes the tree cutting, we cannot grant permission," Swamy explained, according to the report.
In a significant administrative reshuffle, the Karnataka government has appointed Maheshwar Rao M as the new Chief Commissioner of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).
Currently serving as the Managing Director of the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), Rao will now shoulder the additional responsibility of overseeing the city's civic body, according to a report by the Times of India.
Rao steps into the role vacated by Tushar Giri Nath, who has been reassigned as the Additional Chief Secretary in the Urban Development Department. Alongside his new role, Nath will continue to function as the Additional Chief Secretary (Home) and the Administrator of BBMP.
These changes come in the wake of Umashankar S R's retirement on April 30, necessitating a shuffle in top urban governance positions.

‘Land acquisition issues, pending bills': Bengaluru's ‘Stonehenge' Ejipura flyover unlikely to be completed this year
Written by Bhoomika Roy Banerjee Taunted as 'Bangalore Stonehenge' and 'monument' on Google Maps, work for the Ejipura flyover in the city does not appear to be headed for completion anytime soon. With uncleared bills, land acquisition issues, and just 50 per cent of the construction complete over eight years, the flyover has been creating more troubles instead of easing congestion in the area. Meant to connect Kendriya Sadan in Koramangala to the inner Ring Road at Ejipura Junction, the flyover stretches across 2.5 km. Its construction was approved in 2014 and a tender was awarded in 2017 with a 30-month deadline. The project was supposed to be completed in November 2019 but the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) extended the deadline to December 2020 and imposed a penalty for delay. Despite protests from residents and elected representatives, nothing changed. However, after the Karnataka Congress government came into power, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said in August 2023 that an additional Rs 141 crore was required for the project and assured to solve the problem soon. 'It is really unfortunate that the project has been delayed. I will ensure that it is completed,' he said then. Last month, Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy said that around 50 per cent of the flyover's work was complete and the rest was underway. 'Initially, there was no need for land acquisition, but the BBMP still went ahead and notified 32 properties. Issues related to one property and the St John's (hospital) property are likely to be resolved in the coming days,' he said, adding that pending bills for the completed works will also be cleared soon. 'In view of the monsoon, I have instructed officials to lay an additional layer of asphalt under the flyover to ensure smooth traffic movement. We expect 90–95 per cent of the work to be completed by December,' he said. However, an official associated with the project said they are yet to iron out land acquisition issues. 'A portion of land close to St John's Hospital is yet to be acquired. A meeting has to be held with the stakeholders,' the official told The Indian Express. As of now, 416 segments out of the planned 762 have been cast, and 291 segments have been erected, according to the BBMP. On the ground, commuters and shopkeepers remain frustrated. While construction is going on, its pace is slow. Mohan Kumar, a traffic police constable stationed at the site, says, 'Peak traffic hours are from 8 am to 11.30 am and from 4.30 pm to 9 pm. It is always congested, and when it rains it becomes worse.' Muthu, an employee at TVS which is located near the construction site, said part of the flyover now passes in front of his shop, which is a sign of recent progress but beyond that point, there are 'just bare pillars.' Alim Pasha, manager of the long-standing Sapphire Gift shop in the area, said the situation has affected business, especially for smaller shops. 'Business has been bad, and people barely come. The store is mostly empty. Even if they come, it is mostly during the afternoon when the traffic is moderate. ‘Finish Yelahanka flyover work by December-end': BBMP Chief
BENGALURU: BBMP Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao has directed officials to complete the flyover work on Doddaballapur Main Road in Yelahanka by December. Speaking during inspection near Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan Main Road in the Yelahanka zone, he said that the 2-km flyover work is 60 per cent complete and officials have been told to complete the remaining work by December-end. Rao also inspected footpath of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan Main Road and noticed that the footpath had collapsed in some places. He instructed the officials to immediately carry out repairs including installing kerb stones. Iron rods installed by BESCOM to the transformer on the footpath are too low, which will cause difficulty for the public to walk on the footpath, he said, instructing BESCOM officials concerned to immediately fix it. On the 16th B-Cross Road in Yelahanka's surroundings, he noticed that some shop owners had thrown waste on the footpath and told the marshals to fine the shop owners. He also instructed them to instruct them not to throw waste on the roadside or in empty spaces. He directed officials to immediately install slabs, which were not installed for the 15-metre footpath at Chikkabommasandra Cross. Noticing a building being constructed on the 1st Main Road in A-Sector of Yelahanka in violation of the plan, Rao instructed the officials to immediately issue a notice under the Municipal Corporation Act 2020 and remove parts of the building constructed in violation of the plan. He also instructed the officials to take action against the buildings constructed in violation of the plan within the Yelahanka zone. It is essential to carry out annual maintenance of the newly constructed watch tower, cycle track, car tower, Kannada Akshara Mala and other decorative lights in Yelahanka, he said and instructed the officials to submit a proposal for the grant required for their annual maintenance.

We'll submit regional imbalance report based on development indicators, says Govinda Rao
The Karnataka State Committee for Redressal of Regional Imbalance will evaluate district-level development based on multiple sectoral indicators and submit a comprehensive report to the government, committee chairperson M. Govinda Rao has said Presiding over a district-level review meeting at the Deputy Commissioner's office in Hosapete on Wednesday, Prof. Rao stated that the committee will examine in which sectors the district lagged behind and what changes will be necessary to address development imbalances. He referred to the landmark 2002 report by D.M. Nanjundappa which classified the then 176 taluks of Karnataka into four categories — developed, backward, more backward and most backward — and recommended allocation of funds accordingly. 'Following this classification, the State government spent ₹31,000 crore on the development of identified backward taluks. The current assessment will be indicator-based. It will help us understand to what extent development has taken place as a result of implementing the Nanjundappa report. If any region continues to remain backward, we will study the reasons — be it in income, education, healthcare or other sectors,' Prof. Rao said. The State government, he added, constituted a committee of economic experts in September 2024 to take the initiative forward and the committee will identify development indicators across various domains such as agriculture, industry, financial and technical infrastructure, economic growth and social services. Prof. Rao emphasised the importance of industrial development in the district to generate employment for local youth and to reduce migration. He noted that several programmes are being considered for the holistic development of the region. Speaking on the occasion, Kudligi MLA N.T. Srinivas said that his constituency has a large population of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. He called for the appointment of adequately trained teachers based on student numbers in government schools. He also stressed the need for enhancing skill development training for local youth and to promote tourism in the region, given its rich religious and natural heritage. Harapanahalli MLA Latha Mallikarjun underscored the need to improve basic infrastructure in urban areas and said that efforts must be made to stop outward migration. She pointed out the existence of 38 tribal tandas (settlements) in her constituency that require focused development. She also flagged the shortage of doctors in government hospitals and urged for prioritisation of employment generation, support to farmers and improvements in the health and education sectors. Hosapete MLA H.R. Gaviyappa noted that tourism will play a pivotal role in boosting the district's economy. He called for improved infrastructure in tourist hotspots, including the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hampi, and advocated for the establishment of new industries, including sugar factories. 'Better support prices for farmers crops, expanded irrigation facilities and the setting up of super-speciality hospitals, medical colleges and small-scale industries at the district headquarters will facilitate the development. The development of educational infrastructure, promotion of student engagement in sports, agro-based industries and revival of the silk industry also play a key role,' he said. Deputy Commissioner M.S. Divakar, along with committee members S.T. Bagalkote and Sangeetha Katti, were present in the meeting.
