General insurance industry to invest Rs 100 cr annually for next 3-5 yrs in nationwide awareness campaign

general insurance industry
has committed to investing Rs 100 crore each year for the next 3–5 years in a awareness campaign to improve
insurance
adoption.
Backed by the
General Insurance Council
and regulatory support, the campaign is looking to bridge the gap between insurance availability and its penetration across vast population and diverse geographies.
The industry leaders today came together to discuss the need for the campaign- Achha Kiya Insurance Liya- with a vision to increase the insurance penetration which at 1% of the GDP against the global average of 3.3%.

, said the industry quietly pays claims when it matters the most, that is at the time of need.
'Last year alone, 2.69 crore families benefited from health claims worth ₹83,000 crore. During COVID-19, the industry paid five times its annual profit in claims, without a single bailout request from the government. Insurance silently cushions people in their most vulnerable moments,' he said.

Drawing a sharp comparison between developed and developing economies and how the two gets affected post a catastrophe, he said, in Florida, when a hurricane hits, the state's GDP goes up, thanks to insurance payouts fueling recovery. 'In India, GDP dips because of underinsurance. This campaign is about changing that reality,' he said.
He said that ninsured MSMEs take the biggest hit during catastrophes, dragging GDP down by 1.82%. 'If we plug this leaking bucket, India's 6–7% GDP growth can climb to 10–11%. That's the power of insurance,' he said.

, stressed the role of digital infrastructure in expanding reach saying that with data from IIB, we can now pinpoint uninsured vehicles on Indian roads. 'This opens the door to precise, data-driven enforcement and outreach,' he said.
'Insurance is the only product needed from birth to death,' said Mayank Bhatwal, CEO of Aditya Birla Health Insurance. 'Whether rich or poor, people don't want to compromise on quality healthcare, and only insurance can make that quality accessible.'

For the first time, Indian hockey players selected for the men's and women's national camps will receive a Rs 25,000 monthly out-of-pocket allowance, a decision sanctioned by the sports ministry after consistent requests from the sport's governing body. Eighty players (40 men and 40 women) are set to benefit from this allowance, which is extended to athletes in the developmental group of the Target Olympic Podium Scheme. The decision was made during the Mission Olympic Cell's monthly meeting on Thursday. This allowance will cost the government Rs 20 lakh per month, while core group athletes receive Rs 50,000 per month. 'The allowance was being requested by Hockey India for some time, and we have decided to accept the demand. The players have performed reasonably well, and it is on merit," Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya informed reporters in an informal interaction. Hockey India will need to submit a list of players every month to facilitate the disbursement of funds. 'The list will consider form and fitness, and names might change depending on these factors," a sports ministry source explained. Currently, hockey players earn salaries from their respective departments and organisations, although a proposal for a graded contract system by Hockey India has been under consideration for the past few years. Their additional source of income comes from prize money for strong international performances in events like the Olympics and the Asian Games. The men's team has secured two consecutive bronze medals in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and the subsequent Paris Games last year. The women's team finished fourth in Tokyo but did not qualify for the Paris event. Both teams are currently competing in the FIH Pro League's European leg, where the results have not been particularly encouraging so far. The MOC also approved financial proposals amounting to Rs 4.28 crore during the meeting. A significant portion of the funds — Rs 1.38 crore — will be allocated to tennis players such as Saketh Myneni, Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan, and three women players. 'Several proposals for assistance from para-athletes were also approved. Additionally, a few additions were made to the TOPS developmental group. The core group remains unchanged for now," a Sports Authority of India (SAI) official stated. The ministry has also decided to enhance its talent identification process with an app that will allow talented youngsters to upload their performances for evaluation by regional talent identification panels of the SAI. 'If found promising at first glance, the youngster will be invited to Khelo India Regional Centres where their potential will be assessed. This will broaden our talent identification mechanism, which is currently limited to age group competitions," Mandaviya said. 'It will ensure that we can reach the remotest corners of the country to find promising athletes. This is all part of the National Sports Repository System," he added. With PTI inputs.

Rung traders seek revival of India-China trade at Lipulekh border

Pithoragarh: Traders from the Rung community, who have historically engaged in India-China border trade through Lipulekh Pass, are demanding its resumption and have expressed deep disappointment over its continued suspension this year. Border trade has remained shut since 2019. "Trade between India and Tibet through Lipulekh has been ongoing since ancient times. Though it was halted after the 1962 India-China war, it resumed in 1992," said Daulat Singh Raypa, general secretary of India-China Border Trade Association. The Kailash Mansarovar yatra , which also passes through Lipulekh, began in 1981. Both the pilgrimage and trade continued uninterrupted until 2019, when operations were suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic. While the yatra has been permitted to resume this year, border trade remains suspended. "We were hopeful trade would also restart once the yatra resumed, especially since Lipulekh is now connected by road," said Raypa. The construction of the Tawaghat–Lipulekh road was completed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) in 2022. "We met central ministers and urged them to restart the border trade," he added. In 2019, 40 traders left unsold goods in godowns and shops, with an estimated Rs 2 crore worth of items stuck in the Chinese mandi at Taklakot, said Singh.

Tripura CM mulls sex education in Class VIII-XII curriculum

Agartala: Tripura CM on Friday said the state govt is considering the introduction of sex education in the curriculum for students in Classes VIII to XII. Speaking at the legislative forum in the state assembly, Saha emphasised the importance of this initiative, stating, "We are considering incorporating sex education and HIV/AIDS awareness in the school curriculum in Class VIII-XII. He also encouraged community involvement, suggesting that MLAs could allocate funds to support HIV/AIDS patients. Saha highlighted the equal impact of HIV/AIDS on both boys and girls and stressed the importance of engaging youth in sports, cultural activities, and other creative pursuits to steer them away from drug addiction and reduce their vulnerability to HIV/AIDS. He said Tripura was the first state in India to introduce Red Ribbon Clubs in schools and plans to create youth ambassadors to lead campaigns against drug abuse. Expressing concern over the rising number of HIV/AIDS cases and injecting drug users, particularly among teenagers, Saha said an average of 120 new HIV infections are reported each month in the state, despite preventive efforts by the state AIDS Control Society. In response to a proposal by Congress legislator Sudip Roybarman, the chief minister supported the idea of adding a dedicated chapter on sex education and HIV/AIDS to the school curriculum to raise awareness among the most vulnerable age group. Additionally, he suggested that each MLA could allocate Rs 1 lakh per year from their area development fund for initiatives against drugs and HIV.
