‘We hear stories': Red Sox playing Rays at Yankees' ‘Boom Box' spring home

Yahoo14-04-2025

TAMPA — The Tampa Bay Rays' game notes include a tidbit titled, 'Boom Box.' It notes there have been 31 homers hit in the first 12 games at the Rays' temporary home, George M. Steinbrenner Field. There have been 26 homers hit here over the past six games (4.3 per game).
Tampa Bay is playing here at the Yankees' spring training home during the 2025 season while Tropicana Field is being repaired. Hurricane Milton caused $55.7 million of damage to Tropicana Field, per the Associated Press.

'Obviously we have no idea how it's going to play. We hear stories about it,' Red Sox manager Alex Cora said here Monday, hinting at the way the ball flies out of here. 'But we just gotta show up and try to win the series.'
The Red Sox' Wally home run head was sitting in the visitors clubhouse waiting to be used before the first game of Boston and Tampa's three-game series Monday. But how many times will it be used?
The Red Sox are tied for 21st in the majors in home runs with just 12 in 17 games.
Boston is sixth in the majors in runs with 77 but 40.2% of those runs came in two games against the Cardinals. So Boston has scored 46 runs in its other 15 games, an average of just 3.1 runs per game.

Is this the perfect place for Boston's offense to break out?
'Obviously facing a tough pitching staff, it's hard to do,' Cora said. 'But we feel like we are a capable team offensively. So hopefully we can hit a few balls in the air and start having fun again.'
Cora said the ballpark renovations were done well.
'We like it. They did a good job,' he said. 'The cage, especially. We saw it during spring training. They did an amazing job. Very spacious. The weight room is good. It's a good facility.'

MLB Rumors: Insider disclosed Boston Red Sox approach to trade deadline, plan to improve roster

The Boston Red Sox have fallen short of expectations this season, entering MLB games today below the .500 mark and 8.5 games in back in the American League East. However, amid a recent turnaround, it appears Boston has no intention of operating as sellers at the MLB trade deadline. Jim Bowden of The Athletic reports that most around the league expect Boston to try and make trades to improve their roster this summer. Specifically, there's a belief that Boston will attempt to trade one of its outfielders for a starting pitcher and aim to upgrade at first base. With Roman Anthony called up, it gives Boston more flexibility with its outfield to flip Duran for a starting pitcher. If Duran or Ceddanne Rafaela were to be moved, Boston would certainly be seeking a front-line starter with multiple years of contract control. It could be an enticing opportunity for clubs like the Tampa Bay Rays and Arizona Diamondbacks, teams that aren't rebuilding but want to compete next season. Given the depth of the Red Sox farm system, they should be well-positioned to find a quality first baseman among selling teams this summer. Xander Bogaerts gets real on Giants stunning Rafael Devers trade

The post Xander Bogaerts gets real on Giants stunning Rafael Devers trade appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Boston Red Sox shockingly traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday — baseball's equivalent of the Luke Doncic blockbuster in the NBA from February. Advertisement This deal surprised the entire MLB world, and Red Sox fans are undoubtedly upset after the franchise parted ways with their best hitter. But the Giants are surely going to benefit from Devers' arrival as he joins the heart of their lineup. Xander Bogaerts, who played with Devers as a member of the Red Sox, reacted to the news as the San Diego Padres' NL West rivals just got a lot better offensively. Via The Athletic: 'I ain't a pitcher, so I don't have to deal with it,' Bogaerts said. 'But man, that's a bat. That's a powerful bat.' Bogaerts saw firsthand just how talented Rafael Devers really is. While there was drama surrounding the superstar this season due to Alex Bregman taking his position at third base, there's no questioning Devers' ability with the bat in his hands. Advertisement The slugger is hitting .274 with 15 home runs and 59 RBIs so far in 2025, and he started his Giants tenure in the best way possible on Tuesday night, going 2 for 5 with a double and an RBI. Manny Machado, Bogaerts' teammate on the Padres, loves the addition to the division as it will create more competition for San Diego: 'Good competition,' Machado said. 'It's gonna be till the end. It's what we play for. It's definitely gonna be fun. This division just got better. It was good already and great already. So, it just got better. It's gonna be a fun ride.' The Giants didn't give up any major pieces to get Rafael Devers, either. It cost them two starters and two minor league prospects. It does feel like the Red Sox definitely got fleeced here, especially since they were shaping up to be a playoff team — even if it meant locking down a Wild Card spot. Boston insists they are still eyeing the postseason, but trading away your best player doesn't exactly scream we're trying to be competitive.

MLB rumors: Rival exec suggests Red Sox make Brewers trade

The post MLB rumors: Rival exec suggests Red Sox make Brewers trade appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Boston Red Sox have already made one franchise-altering decision this season by choosing to trade third baseman Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. At least one person believes they should be ready to make another. Mark Feinsand of recently reported that one rival executive believes Boston should make a trade for Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Rhys Hoskins. Advertisement 'What the general public never factors into their knee-jerk trade reactions is what the teams trading away the large contract can now go do with those dollars,' an NL executive said hours after the trade. 'Boston should go trade for someone like [Brewers first baseman] Rhys Hoskins right now. Then the deal takes on a whole new dimension.' Boston has newfound flexibility after moving Devers, and since they are in the hunt for an American League Wild Card spot, they may be willing to make another splash sooner rather than later. 'I think we're absolutely going to look at the best use of those resources [from financial flexibility created by the Devers trade] and could put them to use as early as the 2025 Trade Deadline,' Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said earlier this week. Schematically, Hoskins would fit the Red Sox perfectly. The club signed All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman shortly before the start of Spring Training. Additionally, first baseman Triston Casas is out for the year with a left patellar tendon rupture. Advertisement Adding Hoskins would instantly fill an important vacancy. The 32-year-old has hit 11 home runs, 38 RBIs across 71 games this season. He has mashed 185 career home runs and has also earned an .821 lifetime OPS. Further, he was a pivotal part of the Philadelphia Phillies' run to the World Series in 2022. If Boston is searching for a player who can immediately contribute to a winning effort, Hoskins has already proven that he can succeed under intense circumstances. But, it remains to be seen whether or not the Red Sox will look to make such a significant swing on a player who will likely be a free agent at the end of the season.
