An Australian twang rings out as the camera zooms out and shows a police officer in full uniform – on the beach in swimming trunks.
Grant Stevens, commissioner of the South Australia Police (Sapol), is on a charm offensive on TikTok to recruit experienced police officers from Britain to fill their hiring shortages. He highlights the 'competitive advantages' such as an attractive salary and coverage of permanent visa costs for applicants and their families.
The Queensland Police Service and the Western Australian Police have also been heavily recruiting in the UK. The latter even has its own TV series about British recruits, West Coast Cops.
And it's working. Oliver Vale, 38, recently moved his family over to Australia to start a new job as a police officer in Adelaide.
Over the years, the Vale family had toyed with moving abroad. 'We nearly moved abroad 10 years ago, but after we had the boys [Logan, 7, and Parker, 5], we began thinking if it's not going to be now, then when?' says Helen, 34, a former school inspector.
'The time felt right for the boys to make the move.'
Oliver, an experienced police officer in Hampshire and Nottingham, has often been targeted by recruiters in Commonwealth nations. The couple decided on Australia because labour agreements with the UK make it easier for skilled workers, such as British police officers, to transfer there.
The Vale family had never visited Australia but were 'good at travelling', she adds, and loved the idea of having that outdoor lifestyle revolving around beaches, barbecues and sport. Helen says her biggest worry about moving to the other side of the world was 'spiders and snakes'.
They had started planning a year before, visiting Down Under Live, a UK based emigration event, says Helen. 'It opened my eyes to the fact that thousands make this move every year.'
'We sold everything and jumped on a plane'
From the post-war 'Ten Pound Poms' assisted-migration scheme to those rite-of-passage working holidays, there's a long history of Britons moving to Australia for employment opportunities.
Britons are the largest migrant population there, with 1.1 million living there in 2023, albeit down 6pc from 10 years before, according to the Department of Home Affairs. In July 2023-24, there were 9,916 permanent migration visas granted, of which 4,500 were employer-sponsored places.
Decent relocation packages for sponsored places is part of the appeal. The starting salary for a police officer with at least three years' experience is AUD $80,190 (£38,550), says Monika Setka of Sapol.
'After permanent appointment [after probation], an experienced officer can earn up to $121,805,' she adds.
In the UK, police constables earn £29,907 to £48,231, with a sergeant bringing in up to £53,943, according to the Police Federation. Setka adds that 72 officers have joined from the UK and the Republic of Ireland in the past year, after 1,000 registrations of interest.
Oliver applied to three forces and opted for Sapol for the best benefits package, which includes a government-sponsored permanent residency visa and healthcare. On January 1, the family moved to Adelaide.
'We sold everything and jumped on a plane,' says Helen. They were on the same flight as another British family making the same move through Sapol, which made the leap less daunting.
'We had met the Wilsons before we left. We got on well as their children are a similar age to ours,' says Helen. 'They were staying in the same hotel at Heathrow the night before, and ever since they have been a great support – they now live 30 minutes away.'
They have also received assistance from the mentor provided by Sapol, who is a former British police officer. 'He's been amazing, helping us to decide where best to live and find a rental property,' says Oliver.
The family live in a three-bedroom house in Modbury, a popular suburb of Adelaide, which is around 30 minutes to the beach. The house, which they have for a year, is £1,100 a month, after which they hope to buy a property – a three-bedroom home costs around $850,000.
Luckily for the family, this is lower than the average price of an Australian home, which in March surpassed $1m for the first time, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
On April 1, a ban on the purchase of second-hand homes by foreigners began that will last until March 2027, to help reduce pressure on housing supply. Temporary residents cannot apply to buy, but permanent residents such as the Vales can do so, and also apply for mortgages.
Foreigners have to apply for approval to buy from the Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB), an online process with a fee that depends on the value of the property, but starts from around $4,000.
Families moving to Australia cannot apply for a place in a public (state) school until they have an Australian address to prove they live in the catchment zone. Since the academic year starts in January, it's easier enroling then.
Helen says getting the boys into school proved to be fairly easy. 'I contacted three schools, and they were all very approachable and had spaces. The boys soon made friends.'
Also fairly painless was getting a job as a school support officer, rather like a teaching assistant in the UK, at a special needs school nearby. 'I am earning the same as when I left the UK, but with a third of the responsibility,' says Helen.
Weekends spent indoors or on car trips to soft play, Ikea or Costco are now full of BBQs, outdoor sports and bike rides. 'There are so many more opportunities to be healthier, and public facilities are better organised than in the UK. It feels like taxes are being spent in the right way.'
Both boys have got into Aussie Rules football and basketball. They have met British expats aside from the Wilsons, including other police officers on the same three-month training course as Oliver, alongside Canadian Mounties and Irish Gardai.
How to get a visa
It's now harder to make a move Down Under than it once was.
'Australia is moving towards the New Zealand model of visas for highly-skilled workers who secure a job before first,' says Chris Tunbridge, of immigration consultancy, Tri-Nations Migration.
But there has been an increase in availability of the Skills in Demand (SID) visas that replaced the Temporary Skills Shortage (TSS) visa at the end of 2024, which means more people can move over on this visa per year.
It's a fast-changing landscape. Each year, the Australian government has quotas for the different types of skilled migrants, but the quota of three other types of general skills visas has been halved.
It is not just what you may assume – doctors, nurses, teachers, carers and police officers. He says that in-demand occupations in Australia include chefs, mechanical engineers, civil engineers, software engineers and accountants.
You can stay as long as your visa lasts – and remain in the country longer if nominated by an employer for a new visa. 'Once your residence is approved, you may work in any job you like.'
Curiously, police officers aren't on that list despite being in great demand. This is because of security reasons, says Tunbridge, but state governments can recruit foreigners to meet a specific need.
Only police officers from the UK, Ireland, Canada and New Zealand are eligible to apply for a job without being a permanent resident or citizen of Australia.
Tunbridge says that many Britons don't get a job until they arrive on either a working holiday visa, or a six-month visitor visa. 'It's easier to meet prospective employers once they have experience in the country.'
The one-year working holiday visa is now open to under-35s, while other visa options include the National Innovation Visa (NIV), a permanent visa for exceptionally talented individuals.
The government ended its golden visa (Significant Investor Visa) aimed at attracting wealthy foreign investors last year, while New Zealand has since revamped its own version.
Such a move requires a lot of planning. At the recent Down Under Live events, Tunbridge had demand from 200 families, with Perth and Queensland especially favoured.
'Assess your eligibility from the lists. Which state can sponsor you?' he advises. 'There are hundreds of immigration channels so seek advice – you need a strategy. Government fees are very expensive if you get it wrong.'
The high cost of Oz
Once you have found a job, the big problem can be affording the house and lifestyle you had in mind, says Michael Lang, of Savills. Salaries for many jobs can be higher than in the UK, but the cost of living is also high.
'Many of the best work opportunities are in southern Australia where housing prices are high. So a typical trend is arrivals renting until they get their permanent residency and buying a home in Brisbane, up north.' With this status, they will also pay lower stamp duty surcharges than non-residents.
The median house price for Brisbane is around $1m – the same as the Australian average – according to McGrath, an estate agent. Investors are being attracted by the value of the smaller cities for better value. The median in Sydney is nearly 50pc more, or a hefty $4m in Manly, a beachside suburb traditionally favoured by British expats.
'We are seeing people look to the Sunshine Coast [in southern Queensland] for better affordability – especially Noosa and Buderim,' says James Baker, of McGrath. In the latter, a hillside suburb, a three- to four-bedroom house costs between $1m to $1.3m.
But there is an exchange rate advantage for those with British pounds, making prime homes effectively 5pc cheaper than a year ago, according to McGrath, despite their 1.8pc rise.
In Adelaide, Helen reckons the cost of living is pretty similar to the UK, as is the level of personal income tax paid each month. 'Grocery shopping is often a bit more costly, but better quality. Energy prices are lower, fuel is only 76p per litre and there is no council tax.'
The biggest downside of moving Down Under is missing family and friends. 'If you think it's 60pc worth doing, it's worth trying,' says Helen.

Passengers are facing delays, scheduling changes and even cancellations as airlines recalibrate their plans to avoid a large chunk of Middle Eastern airspace. Since Israel launched missiles at Iran on 13 June, airlines have been taking alternative routes in order to stay away from parts of the region including Iran, Iraq, Syria, Israel and parts of Jordan. The conflict is escalating as many Australians prepare for trips to Europe during the northern hemisphere summer. If you're one of them, how will the airline disruptions affect you? It all depends on the airline you plan to fly with, and which route your flight is taking from Australia to Europe. Aviation expert Prof Rico Merkert says airlines that stop over in the Middle East, such as Qatar, Emirates and Etihad, are likely to be affected. 'For sure there will be quite a bit of delays and possibly the odd cancellation,' Merkert, deputy director of the University of Sydney's Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies, says. 'Getting to the Middle East is probably still OK but once you get there it might be a bit hectic … with the potential for detours and delays. 'And, obviously, flying to Iran at the moment is not possible.' For example, Emirates typically flies from its home airport in Dubai into continental Europe using Iranian airspace, Merkert says, 'so they'll need to detour'. 'It's not just Iranian airspace, it's also Iraq, Syria and part of Jordan as well,' he says. 'Essentially, everything that's between Israel and Iran, because they do keep sending missiles to each other.' Emirates was contacted for comment, but did not respond by deadline. Qantas, which operates flights to London direct from Perth or via Singapore from Australia's east coast, has indicated it is monitoring the situation and says it will alter its flight paths if necessary but has not made changes yet. As Merkert points out in one example, a passenger on the daily QF1 flight from Sydney to London via Singapore would avoid Middle Eastern airspace, as those flights go over central Asia. However, the national carrier only flies from Australia to London. If you book with Qantas and want to go elsewhere in Europe, you're likely to be flying with Emirates, its international partner. Virgin only recently launched international flights, after entering into a codesharing agreement with Qatar, similar to the one between Qantas and Emirates. Qatar is headquartered in Doha, not far from Emirates' base in Dubai. As well as a partial ownership stake for Qatar, the alliance includes a so-called wet lease deal, whereby the Gulf carrier provides planes and crew to the Australian airline to operate weekly services to Doha under the Virgin brand. Virgin on Monday indicated its wet-leased service to Doha remained unaffected but has not ruled out scheduling changes. On Monday, a Qatar Airways spokesperson said the 'evolving situation in the region' would 'require some schedule changes'. The airline did not elaborate on what those changes involved but advised passengers to check its website for the latest information. 'We are continuously monitoring and assessing the situation, and reacting in real-time to ensure we operate under the safest conditions possible at all times,' the spokesperson said. 'We have some of the best people in the business working behind the scenes to keep our network strong and secure, and to ensure we remain the airline you can trust and rely on.' Etihad, another Gulf carrier, has suspended all flights between its base in Abu Dhabi and Tel Aviv until 15 July. 'This remains a highly dynamic situation, and further changes or disruption, including sudden airspace closures or operational impact, may occur at short notice,' a spokesperson said on Monday. 'Etihad continues to monitor developments closely in coordination with the relevant authorities and is taking all necessary precautions.' Merkert says he expects Turkish Airlines flights to face similar problems, as the carrier typically uses Iranian airspace. The airline, which flies from Sydney to Istanbul and then onwards into Europe – with a stopover in Malaysia – has plans to further expand into the Australian market. The carrier did not respond before deadline to a request for comment. Guardian Australia contacted more than a dozen airlines on Monday asking them what their plans were. Singapore Airlines had cancelled eight flights between Dubai and Singapore, 'following a security assessment of the geopolitical situation in the Middle East'. Thai Airways, which flies from Australia to Europe via Bangkok, said its services were not affected by the conflict. British Airways indicated its flights to Australia were operating as scheduled. While airlines have assured passengers they are making plans to avoid Iranian airspace and other danger zones, Merkert says there are options for people who would prefer not to fly over the Middle East at the moment, pointing to airlines that fly to Europe via Asia without stopping over in a Gulf country. 'My daughter is currently en route to Europe,' he says. 'But she flew with Singapore Airlines and so she flew via Singapore and from there to Frankfurt. That's a route that takes you about an hour north of Iran.' Merkert says another option could be flying to Europe via Japan. 'The problem at the moment though is the Ukrainian airspace is blocked too,' he says. 'It's probably safer, but it also takes additional time.'

The logistics involved in touring Australia with the British & Irish Lions have changed slightly over the years. On the first Lions tour in 1888 the 22 selected players were away from home for 249 days and, in addition to 35 games of rugby, were also required to play 19 games of what we now know as Australian rules football. It took 46 days by boat to reach their destination and attempts to hone their skills on the SS Kaikoura had to be abandoned after all the squad's rugby balls disappeared over the side. The ship, as chronicled in the beautifully updated official history of the Lions, even had 300 stoats and weasels on board as part of a plan to deal with the rabbit population in New Zealand, their first port of call, where they played nine matches. The tour was also touched with tragedy when the captain, Robert Seddon, drowned in a boating accident in Maitland, New Zealand after capsizing his outrigger and being unable to swim clear because his feet were strapped to the footrest. All things considered, the Lions did astonishingly well to leave Australia undefeated in their 16 rugby games, having even won nine of the 19 contests they played under Victorian rules. What price 137 years later – and off the back of a sobering loss to Argentina in Dublin – of an unbeaten nine-game tour of Australia by a 38-man squad commanded by head coach Andy Farrell? The Lions are being quoted at 1/3 to win the three-Test series but those odds ignore the less-cosy reality. The Wallabies are regrouping, defeated England and Wales away in the autumn and, unless a black jersey and a silver fern are involved, can be awkward opponents at home. True, the Lions emerged victorious from the last series in Australia in 2013 courtesy of a 41-16 win in the third and final Test, but one snapshot from the morning of that decisive contest will always endure. Just around the corner from our hotel in downtown Sydney the Lions' forwards' coach, Graham Rowntree, alone and deep in thought, could be seen walking down the hill towards the harbour. All those months of planning, all that sweat and toil, would shortly be distilled into 80 minutes over which he had strictly limited control. Even those closest to the dressing room can never entirely predict how a Lions tour will ultimately pan out. The Argentina setback was a further reminder that a juicy target hangs around every Lion's neck whenever they take the field. Momentum can shift from week to week and injuries can also strike at the most inconvenient moments. Who can forget, for example, the stray elbow that invalided Richard Hill out of the second Test in Melbourne in 2001 and swung a tight series decisively towards the Wallabies? In Australia, too, just wait for the inevitable screeching from certain local media outlets should the Lions put a paw wrong in the early state games, leave a couple of busted bodies in their wake or deign to be anything other than the tamest of pussycats. Farrell's outstanding rugby league pedigree may qualify him for some grudging respect but never underestimate the widespread desire down under to put upstart Poms in their rightful place. On the plus side the 2025 tourists have a coach who relishes such pressure environments. Farrell's 'Take them boys to the hurt arena' address on the eve of the aforementioned Sydney decider is now part of Lions legend, not least because that expedition remains the Lions' only series triumph since 1997. Successfully uniting the pride of the four home unions on the opposite side of the world is not always as simple – or gloriously romantic – as it sounds. Chemistry is clearly vital but, as Friday proved, it can be elusive with limited lead-in time available. The Wallabies also have a useful amount of inside knowledge in the form of head coach, Joe Schmidt, once Ireland's all-seeing guru, and his assistant Geoff Parling, a Lion himself back in 2013. There is a logical school of thought that Johnny Sexton was included on Farrell's coaching ticket specifically because of his famously close relationship with Schmidt and, consequently, his instinctive sense of WWJD – What Would Joe Do? – at any given moment. He will also look at the visiting team sheet and conclude that if the Wallabies can prevent Jamison Gibson-Park and Finn Russell from setting the tactical tone their task will become 10 times easier. Watching Rob Valetini and Len Ikitau playing for the Brumbies in Super Rugby was also to be reminded that Schmidt's Wallabies are capable of packing a punch themselves. The mountainous Will Skelton is back from La Rochelle and Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, who made such an eye-catching start to his union Test career at the end of last year, has already demonstrated an ability to soar above the common herd. Do the Lions possess a similar calibre of match-winner? Yes and no. In Maro Itoje, Dan Sheehan, Tadhg Beirne, Tom Curry, Russell and Tommy Freeman they have their own genuine World XV candidates, but significant front-five injuries could hurt them and Australia could have more out-and-out gas in their back three. Where the touring side are seriously competitive, though, is on the flanks and, potentially, in midfield where Sione Tuipulotu could prove a prickly thistle in the side of his homeland. Wildcard-wise they also have the exciting Henry Pollock, the 20-year-old English bolter with the raw talent and larrikin confidence of a young Shane Warne. While Friday night's game underlined the fact he is still learning, the young flanker does not lack for chutzpah. If anyone is metaphorically going to bowl one outside leg stump and hit the top of off, as Jason Robinson so memorably did in the opening minutes of the first Test at the Gabba in 2001, it is probably him. It should all make for a more stimulating series than was the case in South Africa four years ago. That 2021 expedition was a grim-faced, Covid-ruined, crowd-free test of everyone's resolve during which the Lions mustered just two tries in the best-of-three series, both from driving mauls. Farrell's finest will need to be more ruthless this time around.

Such a move requires a lot of planning. At the recent Down Under Live events, Tunbridge had demand from 200 families, with Perth and Queensland especially favoured. 'Assess your eligibility from the lists. Which state can sponsor you?' he advises. 'There are hundreds of immigration channels so seek advice – you need a strategy. Government fees are very expensive if you get it wrong.' The high cost of Oz Once you have found a job, the big problem can be affording the house and lifestyle you had in mind, says Michael Lang, of Savills. Salaries for many jobs can be higher than in the UK, but the cost of living is also high. 'Many of the best work opportunities are in southern Australia where housing prices are high. So a typical trend is arrivals renting until they get their permanent residency and buying a home in Brisbane, up north.' With this status, they will also pay lower stamp duty surcharges than non-residents. The median house price for Brisbane is around $1m – the same as the Australian average – according to McGrath, an estate agent. Investors are being attracted by the value of the smaller cities for better value. The median in Sydney is nearly 50pc more, or a hefty $4m in Manly, a beachside suburb traditionally favoured by British expats. 'We are seeing people look to the Sunshine Coast [in southern Queensland] for better affordability – especially Noosa and Buderim,' says James Baker, of McGrath. In the latter, a hillside suburb, a three- to four-bedroom house costs between $1m to $1.3m. But there is an exchange rate advantage for those with British pounds, making prime homes effectively 5pc cheaper than a year ago, according to McGrath, despite their 1.8pc rise. In Adelaide, Helen reckons the cost of living is pretty similar to the UK, as is the level of personal income tax paid each month. 'Grocery shopping is often a bit more costly, but better quality. Energy prices are lower, fuel is only 76p per litre and there is no council tax.' The biggest downside of moving Down Under is missing family and friends. 'If you think it's 60pc worth doing, it's worth trying,' says Helen.
