Ahead of Pune civic polls, Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena eyeing leaders from other parties
Uncertain about any pre-poll alliance for the upcoming civic elections, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena is going all out to make its presence felt in Pune city, where it has lost its sheen over the past few years, with only one of the 10 former corporators of the undivided party joining the Maharashtra deputy chief minister's faction.
After the Shiv Sena split led to the distribution of workers between the Shinde-led party and the Shiv Sena (UBT) of Uddhav Thackeray three years ago, all the former corporators except for Nana Bhangire preferred to continue with Thackeray. A few of the nine leaders later joined the BJP, instead of any of the two Senas.
Also, the Shinde-led Sena struggled to make its presence felt in the Maharashtra Assembly elections.
The Sena first roped in former Congress legislator Ravindra Dhangekar with the responsibility of reviving the party in Pune city. 'We will induct leaders and workers from other political parties soon. The Shiv Sena's strength will increase in the city with a focus on preparing to contest civic polls independently,' said Sena leader Dhangekar, adding that it was not known whether there would be a pre-poll alliance with Mahayuti partners, the BJP and the NCP, before the civic elections.
The Shiv Sena is all set to induct Congress leader Sonali Marne and other potential candidates for civic polls from other parties. 'I have decided to join the Shiv Sena as the Congress is not fulfilling its responsibility. The Congress is no more active,' said Marne.
Dhangekar said there would soon be a party rally in the city, where Eknath Shinde would induct Marne and other leaders.
Earlier, the Shiv Sena (UBT) inducted former MNS leader Vasant More to revive the party in Pune. The Opposition party has recently held protest rallies in the city against the ruling Mahayuti.

Row erupts after J&K CM Abdullah opposes flow of Indus water to Punjab; AAP, Congress, Akali Dal hit back
CHANDIGARH: A row has erupted after Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah opposed the flow of water from the three rivers of the Indus system in Jammu and Kashmir to Punjab, reminding the neighboring state of how it had 'maltreated' J&K for years. Political parties in Punjab including the Aam Aadmi Party, Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal have hit back, saying it's the responsibility of the Centre, which had put the Indus treaty in abeyance, to appropriately distribute the water and give Punjab its rightful share. Reacting to Omar Abdullah's statement that J&K will not give water from the Indus river to Punjab, AAP Punjab spokesperson Neel Garg accused him of deliberately politicizing the issue. Garg said the authority to decide on river waters lies with the Centre and Omar Abdullah cannot take a unilateral decision on the matter. He emphasized that Punjab should also get a share of the Indus water. Garg pointed out that, like Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab is also a border state. Whenever war occurs, Punjab becomes the battleground, and when the country needs food grains, it becomes the granary of the nation. Now that there is water available, Punjab has a legitimate claim over it. "In the process of filling the nation's granaries, we have been deprived of our own water. Now that the Indus Water Treaty has been annulled, Punjab has the primary right over this water because it will not only bring relief to our barren lands but also boost our agriculture. When farmers prosper, the nation prospers," he said. Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring also criticized Omar, saying it was unbecoming of the JK CM to make such remarks. He regretted that Omar was now trying to politicize the issue and score some brownie points. 'Where will you send the water and where will you divert the canals?' he asked, pointing out that Punjab would be the natural course of flow for the canals. He noted that the statement smacks of partisan political rhetoric.

UPA abandoned Mumbai to its fate, Mahayuti saved it with massive infra investment: Amit Shah
Mumbai: Union home minister Amit Shah on Friday said the UPA regime neglected Mumbai, but the BJP-led Mahayuti government "saved" it with over Rs 7 lakh crore of infrastructure projects. Investments in the irrigation sector helped end the spate of farmer suicides in Maharashtra, a problem that had been afflicting the state for many decades, the senior BJP leader said. Speaking at the inauguration of the new headquarters of the Maharashtra Chambers of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture here, Shah said India will move up one place to be the third largest economy by 2026-27, and claimed there has been a "symmetric" development in the country over the last 11 years. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Simple Morning Habit for a Flatter Belly After 50! Lulutox With elections to the Mumbai municipal corporation around the corner, Shah said till a few years ago he used to fear what would happen to Mumbai given its problems like population explosion, old and creaking housing, slums, and traffic congestion. Congratulating Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for reversing the situation, Shah said Fadnavis helped the state, and noted that the state also benefited when Eknath Shinde led the previous government where Fadnavis was deputy CM. Live Events Before 2014, there was a "double engine" government of Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi at the Centre with NCP's Sharad Pawar also being part of it, yet the Congress-led ruling alliance "left Mumbai to its fate" for those ten years, he alleged. "The double engine governments under Narendra Modi (at the Centre), and Fadnavis-Shinde (in the state) have saved Mumbai with investments of Rs 7 lakh crore," Shah said. To highlight the BJP-led government 's achievements, he listed infrastructure projects such as the 337-km Metro network at an investment of Rs 1.50 lakh crore, Rs 1.08 lakh crore Bullet train between Mumbai to Ahmedabad, Rs 80,000 crore, greenfield port at Wadhawan, Rs 17,000 crore Atal Setu trans-harbour bridge, Rs 55,000 crore Versova-Virar sea-link and Rs 60,000 crore Virar-Alibag multimodal corridor. Shah also asked if the people now criticizing the style of functioning of the BJP governments had the vision to plan such projects, and added that if they had implemented such projects, Fadnavis would have been left with nothing to do. There are also accusations and criticism regarding ongoing slum rehabilitation projects, Shah rued, without mentioning any specific project. Notably, the opposition has been targeting the BJP government over the Dharavi redevelopment project involving the Adani group. The Fadnavis government also implemented projects in the rest of Maharashtra, he said, citing the examples of new airports at Shirdi and in Sindhudurg district. When he entered politics, farmer suicides in Maharashtra were being discussed at the global level, Shah said, adding that BJP-led governments boosted investment in irrigation which ensured that farmer suicides ended in the state. Replying to criticism of Maharashtra facing injustice in central allocations, Shah said the total devolutions and grant-in aid to the state increased to Rs 7.82 lakh crore between 2014 to 2024, against Rs 1.91 lakh crore between 2004 to 2014 during the UPA era. Additionally, grants were given to irrigation and infrastructure projects as well, the Union minister said. Shah urged industry chambers like MACCIA to sensitise the government about the challenges faced by its members for better policy outcomes, recalling how suggestions to build the Konkan Railway by lobby groups helped economic growth. Underlining that global events like Israel- Iran and Russia-Ukraine wars are having an impact on the domestic economic activity, Shah said business chambers should engage professional bodies to be relevant, which is possible if they continue to make necessary changes in their functioning. Shah also asked MACCIA to introspect on its own policies and think of how to get young blood into its working.

55,000km of rural roads built in Bihar in 10 years, says PM
Patna: Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi on Friday said around 55,000km of rural roads have been constructed in Bihar over the last 10 years. Addressing a public rally at Jasoli in Siwan, where he launched development projects worth over Rs 9,000 crore, Modi greeted the crowd in Bhojpuri and highlighted the state's infrastructural progress under his govt. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He said more than 1.5 crore households in Bihar have been connected to electricity and water supply in the past decade and over 45,000 common service centres have been established. "Despite overnight rain, a large number of people came to bless me. I promise a new beginning in Bihar," he said. The PM laid the foundation stone for a 500MW-hour battery energy storage system project, aimed at strengthening the state's power infrastructure and supporting renewable energy. The Centre has approved Rs 135 crore as viability gap funding, calculated at Rs 27 lakh per MWh or 30% of the capital cost, whichever is lower. Batteries ranging from 5MW to 20MW will be installed at substations in Muzaffarpur, Motihari, Bettiah, Bhagalpur, Sitamarhi, Fatuha, Mushahari, Jamui, Kishanganj and Siwan. He also flagged off the Patliputra Junction-Gorakhpur Vande Bharat Express and the first consignment of diesel locomotives manufactured at the Marhaura plant in Saran, which is being exported to the Republic of Guinea. "They used to call Saran backward, but now engines made here are being sent to Africa. Bihar will be hailed in Africa too," he said, taking a dig at the opposition RJD-Congress alliance. Modi inaugurated the new Vaishali-Deoria railway line worth over Rs 400 crore and launched a new train service on the route. He also opened six sewage treatment plants under the Namami Gange project worth over Rs 1,800 crore and laid the foundation for water supply, sanitation and STP projects valued at more than Rs 3,000 crore in various towns of Bihar. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Projects launched include sewerage and water supply works in Patna, Mokama, Fatuha, Begusarai, Bakhtiyarpur, Motihari, Raxaul, Buxar, Ara, Bettiah, Siwan, Sasaram and Chhapra. He said the new Vande Bharat train would boost tourism and industry by connecting Baba Hariharnath in Sonepur and Baba Gorakhnath in Uttar Pradesh. "It will also create job opportunities for youth," he added. Modi said more than four crore poor people have received pucca houses under PMAY, including 57 lakh in Bihar and 1.10 lakh in Siwan alone. "Three crore more houses will be built. I will not sleep peacefully. I will keep working day and night because you are my family. All our schemes prioritise the poor," he said. "What pleases me most is that many of these houses are registered in the names of women who never had property before," the PM added. Over the past few years, tap water has reached more than 12 crore households across the country, including 4.5 lakh families in Siwan, he said, adding that pipelines and STPs have now been approved for dozens of additional cities in Bihar. Goods like makhana, fruits and vegetables from Bihar will also reach international markets, he said.
