Cong govt's caste survey forced PM Modi to include it in Census: Mahesh Goud

Time of India09-06-2025

Hyderabad:
Telangana Congress
president B Mahesh Kumar Goud on Monday said that despite immense pressure to hold panchayat elections so that pending central govt funds are released, the state govt postponed it to first fulfil the election promise of passing bills for 42% reservation for BCs in local bodies, education and employment.
"The Congress govt successfully conducted the caste survey and passed 42% quota bills for BCs.
Rahul Gandhi
promised a caste survey and it was conducted, with Telangana emerging as a role model for the country. It is because of the caste survey done by the Congress govt in Telangana and pressure from Rahul Gandhi that
Prime Minister Narendra Modi
was compelled to announce a nationwide caste census," Mahesh Goud said at a meeting in Khammam district.
The TPCC chief called upon all groups to feel proud of being born in their community but ensure that there was no hatred for other castes and religions.
"The Congress ideology is social justice through welfare of the poor irrespective of their caste, community, or religion. Follow this ideology in letter and spirit," he said.
On the traditional occupations of various castes, Mahesh Goud said education is an important tool for the development and uplift of the community.
"I personally feel that traditional occupations should continue, but along with this, the younger generations should pursue education and adopt modern technologies in traditional occupations. The Congress govt will support every caste in their traditional occupations, education, and economic growth," he said.

Kerala Bypolls: Counting begins in Nilambur seat, Congress candidate leads in early trends

Counting of votes for the bypoll in the Nilambur Assembly seat in Kerala's Malappuram district began at 8 am Monday. Early trends show that Congress candidate Aryadan Shoukath is leading as the first round of counting was in progress. The constituency voted on June 19 after CPI(M)-backed two-time Independent legislator P V Anvar quit last year. The Nilambur Assembly seat, which falls within the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat represented by the Congress's Priyanka Gandhi, had registered 75.87 per cent of polling. In the first stage of counting, 1,403 postal votes will be opened before unlocking Electronic Voting Machines, which had recorded 1,74,667 votes. Votes in electronic machines will be counted in 19 rounds. The CPI(M) has fielded its young party state secretariat member M Swaraj, and the Congress has nominated Shoukath, the son of late party veteran Aryadan Muhammed, who had uninterruptedly represented the seat from 1987 to 2016. Anvar, who had quit raising a revolt against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, is contesting as an Independent candidate. The Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded Mohan George, who had been with the regional Christian party Kerala Congress before embracing the BJP after the by-election schedule was declared. The bypoll outcome is crucial for the ruling CPI(M)-led LDF regime and the Congress-led Opposition UDF as the Kerala Assembly elections are slated for April-May 2026. A victory in the by-election will serve as a major boost for the Pinarayi Vijayan regime, which is gearing up for a third consecutive term. Anvar has declared that he is in the election fray to defeat 'Pinarayism,' (style of functioning). Congress, which has been in Opposition for the last nine years, has stated that it is fighting to prove the anti-incumbency factor against the Vijayan regime.

Iran-Israel conflict: Congress asks govt to show moral courage, slams it for not condemning US strikes

NEW DELHI: US President Donald Trump's decision to unleash American air power on Iran makes a "mockery" of his own calls for the continuation of talks with Iran, the Congress said on Monday and slammed the Modi government for neither criticising nor condemning the US bombing and Israel's aggression. The opposition party reiterated the absolute essentiality of immediate diplomacy and dialogue with Iran. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said President Trump's decision to unleash US air power on Iran makes a mockery of his own calls for the continuation of talks with Iran. "The Indian National Congress reiterates the absolute essentiality of immediate diplomacy and dialogue with Iran. The Government of India must demonstrate greater moral courage than it has so far," he said. "The Modi Government has unequivocally neither criticised nor condemned the US bombing and Israel's aggression, bombings and targeted assassinations," Ramesh said on X.

Counting Underway For Bypoll In 5 Assembly Seats Across 4 States

New Delhi: The counting of votes is underway for the by-elections to five Assembly seats in four states -- Gujarat, Punjab, Kerala and Bengal. The bypolls were held on June 19 for two Assembly seats in Gujarat -- Visavadar and Kadi; and one each in Punjab (Ludhiana West), Bengal (Kaliganj), and Kerala (Nilambur). In Gujarat, the Visavadar seat recorded 56.89 per cent voter turnout; in Kadi, the turnout was 57.90 per cent. Kerala's Nilambur registered a 75.27 per cent voter turnout in the bypoll. West Bengal recorded 69.85 per cent voting percentage in the Kaliganj seat, and in Punjab's Ludhiana West constituency, 51.33 per cent voters turned up. The deaths of the incumbent legislators necessitated the bypolls in one seat each in Gujarat, West Bengal and Punjab, and the resignation of two MLAs led to the polling in Kerala and another seat in Gujarat. In Gujarat's Kadi, the BJP has fielded Rajendra Chavda, Congress has Ramesh Chavda, a former MLA from the same seat, and AAP has fielded Jagdish Chavda. In Visavadar, the BJP nominated former Junagadh district president Kirit Patel against AAP's Gopal Italia and Congress' Nitin Ranpariya. The key contenders in West Bengal's Kaliganj are Congress candidate Kabil Uddin Sheikh, backed by the Left Front, Trinamool Congress' Alifa Ahmed, and BJP's Ashish Ghosh. In Kerala, the ruling LDF nominated M. Swaraj for Nilambur bypolls, whereas Aryadan Shoukath (Congress-led UDF), Trinamool Congress' P.V. Anvar, and Mohan George of the BJP-led NDA are the other candidates in the fray. In total, ten candidates are in the fray. The contest is seen as a litmus test for the ruling LDF government and its prospects in next year's Assembly elections. Ludhiana West bypoll has a four-cornered battle among Sanjeev Arora from the AAP, Bharat Bhushan Ashu from Congress, Jiwan Gupta from the BJP and Parupkar Singh Ghumman from Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). Arora is AAP's Rajya Sabha candidate, and it is being speculated that Arvind Kejriwal may be nominated for the upper House in case Arora wins. Though the AAP leaders have so far denied this move. The counting of votes for the Ludhiana West Assembly is being held at Khalsa College For Women.
