Rookie cornerback Jahdae Barron, making his way to the Denver Broncos, was a surprising transaction to many.

Some media personalities expected the Broncos to use their first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft on a player at a position of greater need. Others – like Draft Wire's Jeff Risdon, who listed Barron as the best cornerback prospect in the draft not named Travis Hunter – expected Barron to already be off the board by the time the No. 20 overall pick came around.
That's not how the dominoes fell, however, and Barron became a Bronco on April 24, 2025.
Vance Joseph, the Broncos' defensive coordinator, will be working closely with Barron as he navigates his first season in the NFL. And it's safe to say Joseph was happy about the decision the team's front office made.
"When you watch his game in college, you see a very intelligent player. You see a guy who played multiple positions in college – corner, he played some safety, he played some nickel. He's a very mature, smart football player," Joseph said. "[There] wasn't a bunch of negative points to his game. So, for us, it was a no-brainer. He's sitting on the board; he's the highest guy on the board. It was a no-brainer for us to draft him."

Joseph had familiarized himself with Barron's game and personality well before the Broncos evaluated the rookie in the pre-draft process. Joseph's cousin, Terry Joseph, served as Texas' defensive passing game coordinator from 2021 to 2024, the final four years of Barron's college football career.

Barron's character both on and off the field only made him more sought-after in the Broncos' eyes, Joseph said.
"Obviously, with these young guys you're drafting, the person sometimes kills the player. But I knew he was a good person. He was a very mature, intelligent person. That was one of the things that we loved about the player," Joseph said. "And you watch the tape, and he's a football player. He can tackle; he can cover. He had ball skills."
Barron heads into his rookie season coming off a decorated five-year career with the Longhorns, where he was a consensus All-American and winner of the Jim Thorpe Award (which is given annually to the top defensive back in college football) during his senior season.

Commanders RB Highlights When He Knew Jayden Daniels Was Star

Commanders RB Highlights When He Knew Jayden Daniels Was Star originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Washington Commanders knew early on they had a star on their hands in 2024 second-overall pick Jayden Daniels. Advertisement Washington reached the NFC Championship Game last season for the first time in 30 years, thanks mainly to Daniels' rise to stardom. For coaches, Daniels' arrival was quick and painless. For some of the team's veteran players, the quarterback's star power was shown at the the start of the regular season. Running back Austin Ekeler spoke on the Ross Tucker Football Podcast to detail just how special Daniels was in their Week 1 contest against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. "I remember hearing defensive players talking to him after the game, just kind of praising his speed," Ekeler said. "First game, not running to throw, but running to run. Kind of like college. Advertisement "We've seen him make some end-of-game plays—game-winner against Atlanta, basically the Eagles, the Bears. Shoot, the list goes in the playoffs, going down and winning that Bucs game." Daniels and the Commanders lost their Week 1 matchup against the Buccaneers but got payback during the wild card round of the playoffs. Along the way, Washington became one of the best offenses in the league. Ekeler and Daniels were key parts of the offense and will remain critical to future success. Ekeler's time in the NFL will end within the next few years, though. Daniels' run is just getting started. And that's what makes the quarterback, and the Commanders in general, so dangerous not only in the present, but also in the future. Kevin Walters questions Broncos' brutal $3.5m Selwyn Cobbo move amid rival links

Former Broncos coach Kevin Walters has claimed the club appears to be pushing Selwyn Cobbo out the door with the winger linked to a number of new teams. Cobbo has fallen out of favour with coach Michael Maguire in 2025 having been relegated to the reserves after a mixed start to the season. Cobbo won't feature against the Sharks this weekend and he was delivered a hammer blow after reports the Broncos moved to extend the contracts of a number of players. Cobbo is on around $650,000 this season but a salary cap crunch at the club has left his future in doubt and the Broncos are yet to table the off-contract star a fresh deal after prioritising other players. According to , Brisbane have finalised extensions for captain Adam Reynolds, gun centre Kotoni Staggs and promising young hooker, Blake Mozer. The $3.5 million retention blitz has left Cobbo's future at the club in doubt and on Friday night Penrith legend Greg Alexander felt it was clear Maguire wasn't sure on Cobbo being in his plans unless he takes a huge pay cut. 'They don't want him, do they. They've shown they're not that keen on keeping him,' Alexander said. And former coach Walters agreed the Broncos appeared to be pushing Cobbo out of the club. 'That's fine (re-signing other players) but they're virtually squeezing him out of the club, that's their message. You can't expect someone to stay and play on half price, can you. 'There was some talk of a million dollars at the start of the year. I think Selwyn is a wonderful footballer. His value at any club is he can play centre, he can play wing, he can play fullback. 'You can't just upgrade and extending everyone and expect to keep them as well. Someone gets squeezed out and it looks like Selwyn will be that person. He'll be a great pick-up for any club.' RELATED: Tigers fans call out Marshall over bizarre snub of star as issue answered Raiders stars in stunning move for Ricky Stuart and son after tough week While it appears from the outside the Broncos are making it hard on Cobbo, coach Maguire claimed on Saturday he wants the winger to prove himself at the club. And if he does so, this would go along way in sorting out his future contract. "Selwyn is aware what he needs to do at this present moment and that is the most important thing for him. Contract talks always sort themselves out by what you can do on the field, so he's focused on that," Maguire said. "With the salary cap and trying to fit things in, I have inherited where things are at at the moment. So you've got to work your way through it and I know the organisation is doing that. And there appears no shortage of clubs keen on signing Cobbo. reported Cobbo's management has met with the Dragons in Sydney, while the North Queensland Cowboys have entered the race. Cobbo's next destination could come down to his asking price and where the club would be keen to play the versatile back.

Dart Gives Progress Report After Minicamp

Dart Gives Progress Report After Minicamp originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The moment the New York Giants drafted Mississippi quarterback Jaxson Dart, he became the most important player on the roster. The Giants are treating him as such and structured their quarterback room to best develop the new face of the franchise. Advertisement That process began with veteran Jameis Winston, who signed a two-year deal in the opening days of free agency. Days later, New York signed Russell Wilson to a one-year, $10.5 million contract, which made him the Week 1 starter. The Giants will redshirt Dart until he's fully ready to go, a privilege bought by having two competent quarterbacks ahead of him. While New York's older passers prepare for the season, they'll also be mentoring Dart, putting their combined two decades of experience to good use. After minicamp ended, Dart gave a progress report, reflecting on the work necessary to become a starter. 'I feel like I've made tremendous strides, especially from my first day to now, just being able to understand the pictures of the offense and whatnot,' Dart told reporters. 'Obviously, I have dive into a lot more but I'm definitely just trying to take it to the next level over the summer. Really just lock in, hone in on as much as I can throughout this time, so that way when I get back for training camp, I'm on an even better level than I'm now.' Advertisement Dart has his fans, but critics pointed to the offense he operated at Mississippi as being elementary compared to what head coach Brian Daboll will ask of him. Dart will have to go through traditional dropbacks and full-field progressions far more often than he did against SEC defenses, and that's a hurdle not every passer can clear. Things so far seem to be going well. Beat reporters have praised his practice performance, and Daboll is getting him action with the starters and backups alike, forcing him to take control when necessary. 'I think the biggest thing is there's a lot of times where you're making a throw and you feel confident, and you have guys on the other end who are extremely talented, great playmakers who either break a pass up or make a great play on it,' he said. 'So, I think probably the biggest thing is just the qualities and just the overall athleticism on the other side of the ball.' In a league filled with the best of Dart's collegiate competition, he knows there is little room for error. The time for those miscues, though, is now, where his aggression is a teaching point that won't show up on the scoreboard. Advertisement 'I'm an aggressive player as is, so I think that's definitely something that I have to continue to learn,' Dart admitted. 'I think this practice setting is a great time for me to do it. Then obviously you make mistakes, you do some really good things and you get to go back and watch the tape and pick up on the things that you need to improve on.' Giants fans won't know Dart's fate for months, but if he's going to play in Year 1, starting on the right foot is imperative. It looks like he's done that, and if his comments are any indication of what's to come, the New York faithful have every right to be excited.
