Nuklear Malaysia Launches Book On Technology In Plant Breeding At International Book Festival

KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Nuclear Agency (Nuklear Malaysia) today unveiled a scientific publication titled Teknologi Nuklear dalam Biak Baka Tanaman Hiasan (Nuclear Technology in Ornamental Plant Breeding) during the International Book Festival organised by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) here.
In a statement, the agency said the book forms part of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation's (MOSTI) efforts to raise public awareness of peaceful nuclear technology applications and to strengthen the nation's research and development ecosystem.
'The book focuses on the application of nuclear technology in agriculture, particularly mutation breeding techniques using radiation to develop new varieties of ornamental plants.
'This technology has been utilised in Malaysia for over three decades, successfully producing a variety of new plants that have contributed to the growth of the local floriculture industry,' the statement said.
The launch ceremony was officiated by MOSTI Deputy Minister Datuk Mohammad Yusof Apdal and was attended by Nuklear Malaysia director-general Dr Rosli Darmawan.
In his speech, Mohammad Yusof underscored MOSTI's commitment to broadening the use of strategic technologies, including nuclear technology, across key economic sectors such as agriculture, industry, medicine and the environment.
'This initiative aligns with MOSTI's vision to position science and technology as the foundation of national progress, while promoting the peaceful and responsible application of nuclear technology in strategic sectors like agriculture,' he said.
He added that the effort is consistent with the National Nuclear Technology Policy (DTNN) 2030, which emphasises the safe and responsible development and utilisation of nuclear technology for the benefit of the nation and its people.
The agency highlighted that since the early 1990s, it has developed more than 30 mutant plant varieties, with about 60 per cent comprising flowering and landscaping ornamental plants.

BATU PAHAT, June 19 (Bernama) -- Despite early setbacks during the prototype development phase, the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) A team refused to give up and went on to emerge as champions of the 2025 Malaysian Robocon Competition at university level. Team leader Moh Nian Chun said he and his five teammates constantly sought solutions to ensure their robot functioned smoothly, in line with this year's competition theme - 'basketball match'. The student from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering said the idea to build two robots with distinct roles – one as an attacker and the other as a defender – began in November, and both robots were successfully completed within six weeks. 'In the beginning, our robot, which was made of steel, had problems moving smoothly due to its weight. 'We had to change materials several times, and after a few demonstration sessions and input from senior students, we finally chose aluminium as the robot's main material,' he said when met after the prize-giving ceremony here today. The prize-giving ceremony was held at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) and officiated by Deputy Director-General of Higher Education (Governance and Development), Ahmad Rizal Adnan, together with UTHM Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Abdul Rashid Abdul Razzaq. Moh said the team also conducted several trial demonstrations to prepare for the actual competition, and their continuous efforts paid off when they were crowned champions and will now represent Malaysia at the international level. 'Our next challenge is to compete in the ABU Robocon International Competition, which will be held from Aug 23 to 25 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. We will do our best to bring glory to the country,' he said. Meanwhile, Ahmad Rizal said the competition, organised by the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) since 2002, is not merely a robotics contest but a strategic platform to foster a culture of innovation and technology among undergraduates.

Seminar Ignites Passion For Islamic Astronomy Among Students
KUALA LUMPUR, June 19 (Bernama) -- Astronomy is gaining traction among young people, with more than 270 pupils from 32 schools in the federal capital and Putrajaya taking part in the 'Seminar Falak: Simfoni Keajaiban Di Langit Semesta 2025' here today. Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) chairman Syed Kamarulzaman Syed Kabeer said the seminar aimed to deepen understanding of Islamic astronomy, covering celestial phenomena, the solar system, kiblat direction, and prayer time calculations. The event was organised by MAIWP's Pondok Moden Al-Abaqirah in collaboration with the Federal Territory Mufti's Office (PMWP). 'Student interest is tangible; 18 schools have established astronomy clubs, and efforts to expand these clubs are ongoing. 'Through these clubs, students are not only acquainted with the theory; they also achieve recognition, such as winning a national championship in the parachute water-rocket event at the 2019 Melaka Astronomy Carnival,' he said when closing the seminar here today. Also present were MAIWP deputy chief executive officer Mohd Fauzi Abidin and its Human Development manager Farizah Kamaruddin. According to Syed Kamarulzaman, astronomy plays a vital role not only in Islamic worship but also in modern technologies such as global positioning systems (GPS) and telecommunications. He also noted that Malaysia currently has 29 official 'hilal' sighting locations gazetted by the Keeper of the Rulers' Seal for observing the new moon, essential for identifying the start of Ramadan and Syawal. Meanwhile, Nur Hidayah Mohd Yusoff, deputy curriculum manager of Pondok Moden Al‑Abaqirah, highlighted that the institution had launched its own astronomy club to raise awareness of astronomy and its importance.

Former Teacher Reflects On Regional Round Tables

Dr Kamaleswaran Jayarajah, who once taught Chemistry and Biology at Kolej Tingkatan Enam Desa Mahkota which is the writer's former alma mater and SMK Chenderiang, Perak is now based at the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) Secretariat in Bangkok. Originally from Tanjung Malim, he is the eldest of three siblings and the first in his family to pursue studies beyond his hometown. With eight years of teaching experience under his belt, followed by four years in the Ministry of Education and three years in the regional education sector, he now contributes to regional policy efforts in Southeast Asia. Moderating one of the forum's sessions titled 'Leveraging on Technology and Innovative Strategies to Reduce OOSCY Barriers', Kamaleswaran said the event's focus strongly resonated with his current work. 'Every country in ASEAN faces unique challenges,' he said when met here and stressed the importance of collaboration, teacher empowerment and cultural sensitivity to address education gaps. ASEAN education policymakers had gathered here, at the Jewel of Kedah, from June 17 until today for the ASEAN Ministers of Education and Higher Education Roundtables (#EduRoundtables2025).
