Jeff Stelling couldn't resist taking Rangers parting shot with Celtic comment on Sky Sports

Daily Record28-05-2025

It has been two years since the iconic Jeff Stelling bid farewell to Sky Sports, and the former Soccer Saturday host made sure to go out with a parting Celtic quip at the expense of Rangers
Jeff Stelling left Sky Sports two years ago to the day, but not without a quick Celtic jibe aimed at Rangers.
It has now been 24 months since Sky stalwart Stelling stepped down from Soccer Saturday hosting duties and said his goodbyes, having been part of the broadcaster's furniture since 1992.

The Englishman, who had dedicated 30 years of his life to the revered programme, went out on this day in 2023 to a standing ovation, but not before leaving a parting gift for Rangers, as he alluded to Celtic's dominance in both the men's and women's game.

Stelling's final show took place on the Sunday, and he, along with colleagues Paul Merson, Clinton Morrison, Kris Boyd, and Matt Dawson, covered the final weekend of that year's Premier League season.
Also on that afternoon was the Women's Scottish Cup final, where Celtic Women faced off against their bitter Glaswegian rivals, Rangers Women.
Fran Alonso's side took a 2-0 lead into the closing stages, and Stelling couldn't help but allude to Celtic's dominance within the men's game too.
Before Stelling could receive a standing ovation from those in the Soccer Sunday studio and bid goodbye, he touched on the cup final scoreline and took a jibe about Celtic's men lifting the Scottish Championship the weekend prior.
"It's the Women's Scottish Cup final as well, and like the Scottish Premiership, to be honest, it's going Celtic's way," admitted Stelling as his final appearance drew to a close.

After this admission, things would get even better for Ange Postecoglou's men's side, as just a week later, they would win the Scottish Cup themselves, sealing a historic domestic treble with a victory against Inverness.
For Stelling, that final programme would mark the end of a storied career, and he made sure to thank all those who helped him over the course of decades as he bowed out.
"It's a team game, right from the people in the call centres who take your calls to the runners, the production team, the people behind the cameras," began Stelling.
"Everyone I've worked with over the past 30 years, I'd like to thank you for that. It's not just on this show; I just want to mention the people in the winning post, the horse racing paper I worked on for many years.
"Times of Our Lives, which I adored doing, the live snooker, darts, greyhound racing, pool. It's been absolutely wonderful, it's been the best job anyone could wish for.
"The principal success is you lot at home. Soccer Saturday will be back and I'll be watching - when Hartlepool are not playing," he concluded.

Arsenal consider Benjamin Sesko transfer U-turn as Marc Guehi call made

Arsenal are set for a busy summer in the transfer market as they look to sign a new striker, winger and midfielder to aid their latest Premier League title challenge Arsenal are yet to sign any new players, but Mikel Arteta is keen to strengthen his squad in a number of positions. The Gunners boss has told fans to expect a "big summer" in the transfer market. A new striker is top of Arsenal's shopping list and they have been heavily linked with several potential options, including Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres. A deal for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi has also been lined up. ‌ Arsenal have finished second in the Premier League for the last three seasons and Arteta will be hoping that his side can finally get over the line next year and lift the title for the first time since 2004. ‌ Here, Mirror Football takes a look at all the latest transfer news and rumours from in and around the Emirates... READ MORE: Sesko frustrations Arsenal are reportedly growing frustrated with Benjamin Sesko's wage demands as they look to wrap up a deal for a new striker this summer. Arsenal are ready to pay £70million for the RB Leipzig star but talks with Sesko's camp over his wages are not going smoothly. The report states that the 22-year-old's representatives want a deal 'much higher' than Arsenal are willing to pay. As a result, the Gunners could perform a U-turn and move for Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres instead. Gyokeres is keen on a move to the Premier League and Arsenal are keeping their options open. Guehi makes decision Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi is ready to snub Arsenal in favour of a move to Liverpool, according to a report from the Sun. ‌ Both clubs are interested in the England defender, but Guehi wants to be guaranteed first-team football and that is more likely to come from Liverpool. William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes have formed an impressive centre-back pairing for Arsenal in recent season. Liverpool, meanwhile, are selling Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen and there are doubts over the future of Ibrahima Konate as his contract is due to expire next summer. ‌ Zubimendi delay Martin Zubimendi's move to Arsenal is expected to be formally confirmed in July, even though the midfielder has already travelled to the UK to finalise the deal. Zubimendi was in London on Friday to put the finishing touches on the move, but Real Sociedad do not want the move to be ratified until July for financial reasons as the current football financial year is due to end on June 30. Zubimendi has a £51m release clause, but the Gunners are set to pay a fee that could reach £55m after negotiating more favourable payment terms with Sociedad.

Tommy Fleetwood denied first PGA Tour win on last hole at Travelers Championship

Fleetwood had been defending a three-shot lead following his flawless 63 on Saturday, sitting at 16 under par ahead of Bradley and Russell Henley. However, a couple of early bogeys threatened to derail his bid to end his record of the most top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour since 1983 without claiming a title. "I'm upset now. I'm angry … it hurts." — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) June 22, 2025 The 34-year-old, though, steadied himself around the turn to edge back ahead of Bradley with birdies at the 11th and 13th. Having found a path on the right of the 15th before going on to save par, Fleetwood looked to be on course once again – only to drop another shot at the 16th. Fleetwood then came up short of the green with his second shot on the 18th. Spurred on by a partisan home crowd, Bradley promptly sent his follow-up to within a few feet. Fleetwood's birdie attempt fell short just behind Bradley's marker, with the Englishman then missing his par putt, having to settle for a bogey and a two-over final round. THE LOCAL KID. @Keegan_Bradley IS A WINNER IN CONNECTICUT FOR THE SECOND TIME IN THREE YEARS! 🏆🏆#TravelersChamp — TravelersChamp (@TravelersChamp) June 22, 2025 The American – who could yet qualify as a playing captain at Bethpage Black in September – then nervelessly rolled in a birdie to finish at 15 under, sparking wild celebrations around the 18th green. 'I feel like from where I was, I should at least be in a play-off,' Fleetwood said. 'I didn't really feel like I hit that many bad shots execution-wise, just sort of a couple of bad decisions and didn't clean 'em up, which is pretty poor and things that I have to work on.' Fleetwood added: 'I haven't been in this situation for a while. When it sort of calms down – I am upset now, I am angry – but when it calms down, I will look at the things that I did well and look at the things that I can learn from. 'I did plenty of things well enough this week to win, but I didn't do that and it hurts.' 273-yard 5-iron around a tree 👀 Special shot from Rory McIlroy. 📺 CBS — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) June 22, 2025 Henley chipped in from the edge of the green on the 18th to secure a tie for second with Fleetwood at 14 under. Harris English and Australian Jason Day finished at 13 under in a tie for fourth. World number one Scottie Scheffler and Masters champion Rory McIlroy both shot five-under-par final rounds to get to 12 under and finish in a share of sixth place. Newly-crowned US Open champion JJ Spaun had the best round of the day, starting off at the 10th, as he carded a seven-under 63 to climb up into the top 15. Viktor Hovland had earlier withdrawn on the third hole of his final round because of a neck injury.
