Tommy Fleetwood denied first PGA Tour win on last hole at Travelers Championship

Fleetwood had been defending a three-shot lead following his flawless 63 on Saturday, sitting at 16 under par ahead of Bradley and Russell Henley.
However, a couple of early bogeys threatened to derail his bid to end his record of the most top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour since 1983 without claiming a title.

The 34-year-old, though, steadied himself around the turn to edge back ahead of Bradley with birdies at the 11th and 13th.
Having found a path on the right of the 15th before going on to save par, Fleetwood looked to be on course once again – only to drop another shot at the 16th.
Fleetwood then came up short of the green with his second shot on the 18th.
Spurred on by a partisan home crowd, Bradley promptly sent his follow-up to within a few feet.
Fleetwood's birdie attempt fell short just behind Bradley's marker, with the Englishman then missing his par putt, having to settle for a bogey and a two-over final round.

The American – who could yet qualify as a playing captain at Bethpage Black in September – then nervelessly rolled in a birdie to finish at 15 under, sparking wild celebrations around the 18th green.
'I feel like from where I was, I should at least be in a play-off,' Fleetwood said.
'I didn't really feel like I hit that many bad shots execution-wise, just sort of a couple of bad decisions and didn't clean 'em up, which is pretty poor and things that I have to work on.'
Fleetwood added: 'I haven't been in this situation for a while. When it sort of calms down – I am upset now, I am angry – but when it calms down, I will look at the things that I did well and look at the things that I can learn from.
'I did plenty of things well enough this week to win, but I didn't do that and it hurts.'

Henley chipped in from the edge of the green on the 18th to secure a tie for second with Fleetwood at 14 under.
Harris English and Australian Jason Day finished at 13 under in a tie for fourth.
World number one Scottie Scheffler and Masters champion Rory McIlroy both shot five-under-par final rounds to get to 12 under and finish in a share of sixth place.
Newly-crowned US Open champion JJ Spaun had the best round of the day, starting off at the 10th, as he carded a seven-under 63 to climb up into the top 15.
Viktor Hovland had earlier withdrawn on the third hole of his final round because of a neck injury.

Russell Henley suffers for honesty at Travelers with Ryder Cup consolation prize left after title miss

Henley called a penalty against himself when his ball moved a fraction in the rough before he played a shot Honest Russell Henley suffered for his classy act of sportsmanship as he came up just short at the Travelers. But the American star admits it was worth it to see United States skipper Keegan Bradley surge towards the title and a place in the Ryder Cup team. ‌ Henley displayed classy honesty during his second round at TPC River Highlands when he called a penalty against himself when his ball moved a fraction in the rough before he played a shot. ‌ It was not seen by anyone else or TV cameras, but he still did the right thing and, in the end, that crucial one-shot deduction cost him a place in a play-off with Bradley. Ironically, as Bradley is now being pushed to play for the United States, he could also knock Henley, who is seventh in the US Points List, out of the automatic qualifying spots come final reckoning. But he's almost sure of a pick either way and he had had nothing but good things to say about his potential skipper and wants him as a player as he said: 'I mean, I hope so. "He's just won, he's been playing great. I think he would be a great team-mate. He just plays with so much passion. "He wants it, he wants to compete, he wants to win. He just, it just means so much to him. That was a really, really cool moment on the 18th. I definitely feel for Tommy [Fleetwood] and I've been in that situation before and it stings, so it's the nature of sport.' Henley's admiration for Bradley is reciprocated by the captain as he sees the prospect of a top-notch individual on his roster. ‌ Victory at the prestigious Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill rocketed Henley up the Ryder Cup standings and cemented his chances of facing Europe in New York. Henley also formed a formidable partnership with Scottie Scheffler at the Presidents Cup last year when he and the World No.1 to secure points as Jim Furyk's men got the better of the International team at Royal Montreal. Henley looks a strong bet to be at Bethpage and that Bradley says he didn't need to watch him down the Travelers stretch as they played together in the final round to judge his minerals with a last-hole chip-in proving his again showing his class and character. He said: 'Russell's way up high on the points, won Bay Hill this year, consistently contends in the majors, finished in the top five at US Open, world-class player. "I wouldn't want to play [against] him come Ryder Cup time. The chip on 18, like he's just nasty and I love it because he's like the nicest guy ever, but he's an amazing competitor. If it was a younger player maybe, but not a guy like Russell.'

Keegan Bradley set for Ryder Cup job that hasn't existed for 62 years after stunning PGA Travellers Championship win

KEEGAN Bradley is set to become the first Ryder Cup captain to play in the event in more than 60 years after denying Tommy Fleetwood his first PGA Tour win. Exactly a year after being handed the USA reins for Bethpage Black in September, Bradley's birdie on the last at the Travelers Championship coupled with playing partner Fleetwood's bogey saw him win by a shot. 6 Keegan Bradley celebrates with his son Cooper Credit: Reuters 6 Keegan Bradley celebrates after sinking the winning putt at the Travelers Championship Credit: Getty 6 Keegan Bradley reacts to making a birdie putt to tie the lead on the ninth Credit: AP 6 Bradley is a serial winner having won eight times on PGA tour Credit: Getty And Bradley, 39, admitted he is closer to selecting himself for the US dozen than at any stage since he took the role - setting up a potential Sunday singles rematch with the Southport golfer. Golf legend Arnold Palmer was the last playing captain when he led the US to a crushing 23-9 mauling of Great Britain and Ireland at East Lake, near Atlanta, in 1963. But Bradley, now up to seventh in the world rankings and ninth in the US Ryder Cup standings - the top six qualify by right and the captain will select the other half of the team - is ready to rewrite the recent history books. Bradley said: 'I never really planned on playing. I really wanted to just be the captain. 'I really felt strongly about that. I want to serve the guys. 'They asked me to do a job. I want to do it to the best of my abilities. 'But this changes the story a little bit. 'I never would have thought about playing if I hadn't won. Tommy Fleetwood's emotional and honest reaction to latest PGA Tour heartbreak

Tommy Fleetwood couldn't his frustration after blowing a golden opportunity to win his first ever PGA title in the final three holes of the Travelers Championship on Sunday Tommy Fleetwood admitted he was 'upset' and 'angry' after blowing his best ever chance to win his first PGA Tour title at the Travelers Championship with two bogeys in the final three holes. 'It was probably the worst way to finish,' said the world No.13. The Ryder Cup star took a three-shot lead into the final round at the TPC River Highlands in Connecticut - and still led by two on the 16th tee. ‌ But he dropped a shot on the par-3 16th after failing to find the green on the 155-yard hole. And when still leading by one on the final hole, the Everton fan nailed his drive but came up short of the green from 149 yards after changing his club. He took three putts from 50 feet for another bogey before Keegan Bradley nailed his five-foot birdie putt in a Ryder Cup-style atmosphere to take the $3.6m first prize. The US captain admitted he could now pick himself after climbing to world No.7 and ninth in the American rankings. ‌ But Fleetwood was left to reflect on his sixth runner-up finish on the PGA Tour without a win - the same as Colin Montgomerie - after 159 appearances. 'I am pretty gutted right now,' he said. 'I'm upset now, I'm angry. 'It's a crappy way to finish. A couple of wrong clubs down the last couple. I obviously didn't putt great today. That long putt on 18, I left it in the worst possible spot just behind Keegan's ball. Not the best putt there either. Things to work on there. 'Not been in that situation for a long time. Thought I did a good job for the most part. Probably the worst way to finish, leading by two with three to play and leading by one going down the last and you don't even make it to a playoff. The worst way it could go but Keegan did great down the stretch. 'Felt like I did a lot of good things, but there was things that I definitely can do better, and I have to do better. 'I would love to ust go and sulk somewhere and maybe I will do, but there's just no point making it a negative for the future really, just take the positives and move on. We will go home, start practising again. Tournaments start again in a bit.' ‌ Fleetwood, who is next scheduled to play at the Genesis Scottish Open on July 10, has now played in the final group in the fourth round seven times on the PGA Tour. He averages 71.48 and has only broken par once. The Olympic silver medalist made only one bogey in his first three rounds - and hit every fairway in his Saturday 63 - but dropped five shots on Sunday. He is golf 's nearly man. 'This is probably as close as I came,' he said. There's been a handful of times where coming down the last with a chance. But, yeah, this was a very close one, this is the longest I've led a tournament, I think, so yeah this probably is the closest.' When Fleetwood found water at the last while in contention for the 2020 Honda Classic, former US Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger caused a storm by dismissing his achievements on the DP World Tour. 'Well it's not on the PGA Tour,' said the American. 'And they know that and I think Tommy knows that. It puts a bit of pressure on Tommy.' After his latest near miss, Fleetwood said: 'Obviously there's a lot of chat about it. I would have loved to have done it today, the search goes on, I guess. When it happens it will be very, very sweet. I know I keep saying it but I haven't really been in a position where I've really been in contention to really worry about when my win might come. Today was one of those days, led for 71 holes and it didn't happen. But in my mind, yeah, I've won loads of PGA TOUR events, I just haven't done it in reality and I'm sure that time will come if I keep working.'
