Karnata Govt agency orders dispatch of 89,389 vials of rabies vaccine to hospitals
Bengaluru: In response to growing concerns over the shortage of emergency vaccines, the state health dept has initiated corrective measures to ensure the uninterrupted availability of anti-rabies vaccines (ARV) and anti-snake venom (ASV) across the state.
The move comes after several public hospitals reported dwindling stocks and delayed updates on the e-Aushada platform, triggering fears of delayed treatment for animal attack and snakebite victims—conditions that require immediate medical intervention.
Currently, 1.5 lakh vials of ARV are available in state-run hospitals. To further bolster supplies, the Karnataka State Medical Supplies Corporation (KSMSCL), the nodal agency for procurement, issued an order to dispatch 89,389 vials of rabies immunoglobulin to hospitals across the state within the next two weeks.
Dr Raghunandan, deputy director of non-communicable diseases (NCD), told TOI that while some vaccine stock is available in hospitals, the larger supply for this year is still in the procurement stage at KSMSCL. "We realised the available quantity would not be sufficient for ongoing treatments. Instructions have been issued to ensure strict compliance with stock management protocols and real-time inventory updates in all govt health facilities," he said.
Asked about the readiness of storage infrastructure, Dr Raghunandan clarified that the department scaled up facilities to safely store the incoming stock. "We ramped up storage to ensure none of the vials goes to waste. Our focus is on 100% utilisation without unnecessary discards," he added.
Karnataka has reported 1.9 lakh dog bites and 16 related deaths, along with 4,786 snakebites and 36 fatalities so far this year.
To streamline the vaccine supply and prevent future lapses, the department issued a fresh set of operational guidelines to district health authorities and institutional medical officers. Facilities have been instructed to update patient-wise drug usage daily on the Aushada software, allowing real-time visibility of stocks and consumption.
Indents must now be raised strictly based on actual usage, not assumptions or stockpiling, to prevent hoarding and ensure equitable distribution.
District officials have been directed to monitor stock levels closely, track usage patterns, and intervene to avoid artificial shortages. Hospitals holding excess stock must redistribute it within their districts before placing fresh requests, and all local procurements must be recorded immediately on the Aushada platform to maintain visibility at all levels.
Compliance will be closely monitored by the district health officers and reported to the state's Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP). The department warned that any institutional lapses in following these protocols will invite strict action.

COPENHAGEN: More than three-quarters of bathing waters monitored in the European Union, Albania and Switzerland were of "excellent" quality in 2024, the 27-member bloc's environment agency said on Friday. All but four per cent met the EU's minimum standard ("sufficient") and just 1.5 per cent were of "poor" quality, the European Environment Agency said in its annual update on the beaches, rivers and lakes that are tested for faecal contamination. Overall, Europe's bathing waters were of the same standard in 2024 as in the year before. The EEA monitors more than 22,000 bathing areas for bacteria such as Escherichia coli (E. coli) and intestinal enterococci, caused essentially by pollutant run-off from livestock farms and household sewage pipes. "Europeans can confidently bathe in the vast majority of the EU's bathing sites that meet the EU's bathing quality standards," European Environment Commissioner Jessika Roswall said. The best bathing waters last year were in Cyprus, where 99.2 per cent were of excellent quality, followed by Bulgaria with 97.9 per cent, Greece with 97 and Croatia with 95.2. The EU-wide average was 85 per cent. Albania came bottom in the ranking, with just 16 per cent of excellent quality bathing waters -- a drop of more than 25 percentage points over the space of a year. Poland was second from bottom at 58.1 per cent, a slight improvement from 2023. In general, beaches were cleaner than rivers and lakes because of seawater's better capacity for renewal. Many of central Europe's inland bathing areas are found in relatively small lakes, ponds and rivers, which are more susceptible than coastal areas to short-term pollution caused by heavy rains, the EEA said. The agency said climate change was expected to increase the intensity and frequency of various extreme weather events, including heavy rains. "In turn, these events will impact bathing water quality through pollution from sewer overflows, floods or surface run-off. "This will come with corresponding potential increased health risks for bathers," it said on its website. The EEA no longer collates data on bathing water in the UK, which left the bloc. But the national Environment Agency found that in 2024, just 64.2 per cent of England's bathing waters were "excellent" and 8.2 per cent failed to meet the minimum standard and were classified as "poor". British water companies, privatised since 1989, have repeatedly come under fire for allowing the discharge of large quantities of sewage into rivers and the sea. EU members, meanwhile, are obliged to monitor popular bathing places from May to September and rank the water quality as excellent, good, sufficient or poor. Of the 321 bathing sites that were recorded as poor in 2023, a fifth had improved by last year. In such cases, authorities must shut the area to bathers the following year and take steps to reduce pollution and health hazards before they can re-open. Sanitation certificates can now be obtained on T.N. e-Sevai portal
: Sanitation certificates can now be obtained on the Tamil Nadu e-Sevai portal — The Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, in a communication, said that the 'issue of sanitary certificate service' was now live on the e—Sevai portal. On May 29, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin officially launched the 'SimpleGov' initiative, marking the full transition to an online Sanitation Certificate system. All institutions are now required to apply or renew certificates exclusively through the e-Sevai portal. Applicants should visit the portal, complete or update their registration, upload all necessary documents, including the sanitation protocol, and submit a self-affidavit signed by the authorised person. On successful submission, the sanitation certificate will be auto-generated with a validity of one year. As per a Government Order, the types of institutions required to obtain the certificates include schools, colleges, shopping malls, marriage halls, factories, including micro, small and medium enterprises, old age homes, children's homes, and working women's hostels. These institutions are considered critical due to their high footfall, raising the need for hygienic conditions to prevent public health risks. The sanitation certificate must be prominently displayed on the premises, along with this, the sanitation protocol must be followed. Authorities from the directorate will be inspecting the institutions, and taking necessary action, whenever required. Manual method ended As per the revised procedure, the existing manual process for issuing the certificates has been discontinued with immediate effect. No physical copies of applications or documents will be accepted. Applications, document submissions, and processing would be carried out exclusively through the Tamil Nadu e-Sevai portal, the directorate said. All District Health Officers have been requested to ensure that the revised procedure is disseminated to all stakeholders in their respective districts, including establishments and field staff.

Southern Railway launches telemedicine link to bring specialist care to remote railway units

CHENNAI: Southern Railway has launched an integrated telemedicine facility in railway hospitals and health units, allowing patients in remote areas to access specialist and super-specialist care without travelling long distances. Inaugurated by general manager R N Singh at the Southern Railway Headquarters Hospital in Perambur on Friday, the system links divisional hospitals and health units to the headquarters hospital here. The facility was developed under the Government of India's e-Sanjeevani scheme. Using real-time video consultations and live streaming of diagnostic reports such as ECGs and X-rays, medical officers at remote locations can now consult directly with specialists at Perambur, streamlining treatment decisions. Officials said the facility proved crucial during the Covid-19 pandemic and is now the first of its kind in Indian Railways. During the launch, Singh witnessed a live consultation from the Divisional Railway Hospital in Madurai and urged officials to ensure high-speed internet across all health units. He reviewed new digital queue systems and signage boards at the Perambur OPD block.
