
Personal Flying Cars May Be Luxury's New Status Symbol

In the future, having a flying car will be a unique and cutting-edge status symbol, even more than owning a customized Maybach or Rolls-Royce. Elite travelers will take to the skies, avoiding traffic, in their personal vehicles.
Doroni Aerospace is on the cutting edge of the market. The company recently secured $180 million in investment to bring America's first personal flying car to market.
The very modern company has its roots in the cartoons of the space age. "My whole life I've been fantasizing about flying cars—ever since I was young. I grew up watching shows like The Jetsons, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Back to the Future—all the futuristic stuff," Doroni Aerospace CEO Doron Merdinger told Newsweek.
"The idea basically started at the end of 2016. I had a 'eureka' moment when I saw this kid playing with a drone," he continued. "2016 was around the time when drones really started to be seen more frequently. I saw how accurately they flew, how sustainable they were, and how easy they were to control. I knew it was only going to progress."

The vision of what flying cars could look like led Merdinger to begin Googling like-minded people. "I knew I needed engineers from different specialties—like aerospace, battery technology, structural engineering, and more. Eventually, I pulled together a team: Ukrainian aerospace engineers, UK software systems engineers, and a battery expert from the U.S.," he said.
The first concept the newly-formed team came up with was an open single-seater, something Merdinger likens to a flying motorcycle. "But over time, I realized that the open cockpit wasn't the most compelling or sustainable concept. You want to feel comfortable and secure," he said.
By 2021, the company was approached by potential investors and shifted focus to a roadster-style two-seater prototype called the H1-P1. It was equipped with four ducted fans embedded inside the wings, engineering the company patented, and two rear thrusters.
With advanced technology and market feasibility comes added challenges. "We understood the challenges drones and helicopters face. For example, drones need to tilt more as they speed up, which can be uncomfortable for passengers and inefficient from an energy standpoint. That's why we knew ducted fans would set us apart. They offer key advantages: safety from bird strikes or people getting close, the ability to fly near urban areas or trees, better energy efficiency and lower noise levels. Plus, they look better—clean and compelling," Merdinger said.
In the post-COVID years, Doroni has been focused on developing a viable product that it can bring to market. The Doroni H1-X combines electric power with vertical takeoff and landing technology (eVTOL).
"In February 2023, we began test flights. I even flew inside the full-scale H1-P1 myself. We have also secured a special airworthiness certification from the FAA. That was huge as it shows the FAA is beginning to recognize and provide credibility for vehicles like ours," Merdinger said.
The company continues to raise funds. "Once the funding comes in, we'll expedite the vehicle's development. We'll have a 24-month runway where we will be focused on development and extensive testing, and parallel work on certification. There will be a lot of testing and building as we approach the product launch," the CEO said.
The company's website touts the H1-X production model's fast recharge time. It can bring its state of charge up to 80 percent in 25 minutes under ideal charging conditions. It is said to be able to fly for 40 minutes at a time with a range of 60 miles.
Owners will be able to take off and land their Doroni eVTOL on the flat rooftop of a two-car garage, or at one of the country's vertiports. A number of airfields and airports across the country are installing vertiports, including at some military bases.
Potential customers can reserve their H1-X with a $1,000 deposit. The expected cost of the unit is estimated to be around $350,000, about the same price as a Rolls-Royce Ghost.
"We currently have over 500 pre-order requests, many of whom have already put down deposits. All the pre-orders so far have come from individuals, which we like. We want to work closely with our first buyers to understand how they see this vehicle fitting into their lives, how they use it, how safe it feels. It's about learning together and delivering the safest, most groundbreaking personal vehicle possible," he said.
The company predicts that it won't be able to deliver its eVTOL to customers until at least 2026. "We expect the MOSAIC rules approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to stretch into 2026. We're introducing a whole new category of vehicles. It's important to take our time, work closely with the FAA, and do things the right way. We know this is disruptive technology which is why we need to stay grounded—no pun intended. We're creating something entirely new. It's important to stay cautious, iterate carefully, and remain aligned with the FAA," Merdinger said.
The FAA's MOSAIC (Modernization of Special Airworthiness Certification) rules are designed to expand the current light-sport aircraft category to include eVTOLs and other advanced aircraft.
"Once we're out there, the market will only grow exponentially. Companies are already approaching us with use cases—from luxury shuttle systems flying from New York to Tokyo in under an hour, to servicing wind turbines in remote ocean locations, and to farming. The use cases are endless," he concluded.
New York to Tokyo in under an hour may seem impossible at first glance. However, transportation and aerospace engineers are working on making it a reality. The 6,700-mile journey could be possible in three segments: a 20-minute flight using Doroni's H1-X from the passenger's home to the departure shuttle, a high-speed transcontinental flight lasting approximately 20 minutes and a final 20-minute flight from the arrival shuttle directly to the passenger's final destination.

Fortune Business Insights projects that the flying car market will be valued at $1.53 trillion USD by 2040.
There are several companies in the eVTOL development space, including Joby Aviation, which acquired Uber's flying car unit in late 2020. Uber then invested $75 million in the company.
Lilium, Archer Aviation and Vertical Aerospace are also working on eVTOL travel, as is aerospace powerhouse company Airbus.

Russian authorities have again declined Anadolu Efes' proposal to buy Anheuser-Busch InBev's (AB InBev) stake in their joint venture (JV). In a filing on Turkey's Central Securities Depository, Anadolu Efes said, 'pursuant to the notification made by the Russian regulatory authorities and considering the developments during the period, the relevant application has been rejected'. 'We are reviewing next steps with AB InBev,' it added. AB InBev and Anadolu Efes established AB InBev Efes in 2018. The JV combines both their Russian and Ukrainian businesses. The venture operates 11 breweries in Russia, producing beers under brands such as Klinskoe and Efes Pilsen. Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Belgium-based brewer announced in April 2022 its intention to divest its stake in the joint venture and began negotiations with Anadolu Efes. In December 2023, AB InBev, known for Leffe, confirmed it would sell its 50% stake in the Russian joint venture to Anadolu Efes. However, Russian authorities blocked the transaction in August of the following year. Two months later, AB InBev and Anadolu Efes finalised a new agreement for the sale of its share in the Russian operations of their joint venture. In exchange, the Belgian brewer planned to acquire Anadolu Efes's stake in the Ukrainian side of the partnership. Moscow assumed control of the Russian segment of the joint venture in January. The Russian government transferred the local assets of AB InBev Efes to a group of companies called Vmeste under "temporary management", according to statements from both brewers at the time. In its first-quarter results for 2025, Anadolu Efes excluded its Russian beer operations from consolidated financials, classifying them as a 'financial investment' due to temporary external management. I took the Cybertruck of electric scooters for a test ride — 3 things I like, 1 thing I don't, and 1 I dunno
As electric scooters and electric bikes gain popularity, could electric mopeds and motorcycles be far behind? How about one that looks like it comes from the future? The Infinite Machine P1 is an electric moped that has a futuristic, cyberpunk-like design, as if you took an 80s Lamborghini Countach and put it on two wheels. Available now for $10,000 — the company is in its early stages — it definitely looks different than every other scooter out there. I took the P1 for a test ride around Long Island City, NY, to see what it could do — and if it's worth its price. Here's my impressions. Top speed: 65mphRange: 60 milesBattery: 72V, 45Ah Motor: 6kW rear hubPrice: $10,000 It was fast Cruising around the streets of Queens, it was hard to really open up the throttle of the P1, but when I got the chance to try it even a little, I was thrown back into my seat as the machine took off. Its throttle was very responsive, accelerating at the slightest twitch of my hand, which made it easy to maneuver at slow speeds, when all I needed was a short burst here and there. You can set it to operate in three riding modes (you can limit it to under 30mph or, if you have a motorcycle license set it to its max of 65mph), plus there's a Turbo Boost button to blast you out even faster. I didn't dare try this on the streets. It was a smooth ride Infinite Machines' showroom is in Long Island City, New York, which afforded me some great views of Manhattan as I was cruising around. Part of the charm of this neighborhood are its cobblestone streets, which, while lovely to look at, can be a nightmare for anyone on two wheels. So, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the P1 handled these bumps with ease; while there was a little bit of rumbling underfoot, the whole experience was far more pleasant than I anticipated. Its ABS brakes were also very responsive, stopping the P1 very quickly. Smart features When you first turn the P1 on, you're greeted with a huge display in between the handlebars. Even better, if you connect your iPhone, it will work with CarPlay, so you can get a massive map and navigation features right before your eyes. There's some other nice tech features: You can lock and unlock the P1 via NFC, it has GPS location tracking, and also boasts front and rear cameras to not only record your rides, but provide extra safety when backing up. An alarm system will also sound a siren and immobilize the scooter if someone tries to make off with it. The P1's 3.2 kWh/45Ah battery is also removable, so you can charge it up separately from the scooter itself, which is handy if you have to park it in a public space. The price At $10,000, the P1 is not a cheap bike, even by electric moped standards. By comparison, the Vespa Elettrica is $8,000, and the NIU NQI GTS starts at $4,800. So, you're definitely paying a premium for this ride. I get that Infinite Machines is a small start-up, so their costs are going to be higher than a bigger manufacturer. Here's hoping that its future mopeds will cost less. In the meantime, if it's the design you're after, the company also announced the Olto, a really cool-looking electric bike (also for a rich $3,495) that has a top speed of 33mph and a range of up to 40 miles. It will ship this fall. Fairly or unfairly, the Infinite Machines' P1 looks very similar to the Tesla Cybertruck (there's no affiliation between the two companies). I'm sure when the P1's design was originally developed, Elon Musk enjoyed a much higher reputation than he does now. Maybe the company should sell stickers that say "this was designed before I knew Elon was crazy." Still, it is an eye-catching design. During my test ride, one passerby even commented "cool bike" as he walked in front of me. If we're going for sci-fi movie comparisons, it gives off more "Judge Dredd" than "Tron" vibes. Time will tell if its look becomes as iconic as a Vespa. I also wish the seat compartment were a touch bigger, so it could accommodate a helmet. While it does have a locking hook where you can attach the chinstrap, I'd prefer something more fully concealed. I didn't hate the design of the P1, but it's definitely an acquired taste. One advantage to its flat sides, though, is that if you drop the bike — accidentally or otherwise — the fact that there's no protruding surfaces means you're less likely to dent the panel. And, in the event you do, it can be unscrewed and replaced fairly easily. I genuinely enjoyed my time riding around Queens on the Infinite Machine P1; it was fast, smooth, and comfortable, and its unique design certainly made it stand out. owever, I'd have to really think hard about buying one, and how much I'd use it, before plunking down ten grand. (I'm also really tempted by company's new electric bike, the Olto, which also isn't cheap, but it's more attainable). Despite its high price, the company's first two batches sold out; you'll have to wait until the fall if you order one from its third batch now. So apparently the company is doing something right. U.S. Pushing Allies to Limit Focus on Ukraine in NATO Summit Communique
The United States is pressuring European allies to limit references to Ukraine in the final communique coming out of next week's NATO summit, according to several sources, a symbolic move that would signal a decline in support for Kyiv under U.S. President Donald Trump's administration. Trump officials have pushed NATO allies to agree to limit mentions of Ukraine in the communique, the document issued at the conclusion of the annual conference that lays out the security alliance's priorities, according to multiple sources in Washington and Europe who are familiar with the negotiations. The current draft of the summit's communique only includes one passing mention of Ukraine's defense capabilities and does not include a broad statement of support for Kyiv, a European official who viewed the draft told Newsweek. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Newsweek. If the U.S. and other NATO members approve the draft, it would represent a departure from the strong statements of support for Ukraine issued at the end of the NATO summits held under former President Joe Biden after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. "People in Moscow, Beijing and in other major capitals of the world look carefully at how the United States and NATO characterize the international security situation," said Jeff Rathke, the president of the American-German Institute at Johns Hopkins University. "If NATO backs away from what it has previously committed to [at the summit], it's a signal of weakness that will very much be picked up on." NATO members are expected to take some steps at the summit to show support for Ukraine. Secretary-General Mark Rutte has called on member states to increase their annual defense spending to deter Russia. The alliance is expected to announce new spending targets of 5 percent at the summit, according to several sources. The figure would consist of 3.5 percent spending on core defense programs and 1.5 percent on military-related infrastructure and logistics. The plan represents a significant victory for Trump, who has long called on NATO members to step up their defense spending. In recent months, the United Kingdom, France, and other countries have also pledged greater military aid to Ukraine, which has relied on Western support in its fight against Russia. The aid has raised tensions between Europe and the U.S. since Trump took office, vowing to bring a swift end to the war in Ukraine. The administration brokered peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, but the negotiations haven't resulted in any meaningful breakthroughs so far. Trump has expressed frustration with both countries for failing to reach a deal, but he has more frequently criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky than Russian President Vladimir Putin.
