BBC to air disastrous First Dates episode as Fred Sirieix steps in
One dater's bizarre behaviour was actually for a very interesting reason
CBBC is set to air its own spin on Channel 4's First Dates, and viewers are in for a wild ride.
Fred Sirieix, known for hosting the beloved dating show, is guest starring in BBC's new children's comedy, Horrible Science. The fifteen-episode series is helmed by the BAFTA-winning team behind Horrible Histories, which featured iconic sketches about real historical figures.
In a similar vein, this new series treats viewers to comical sketches with a focus on scientific topics. In episode eight, Fred steps into his well-known role and hosts 'Scientific First Dates,' which he introduces by stating: "The world may often seem cold and hard, but there is beauty and romance to be found."
Tying in with the show's theme, this segment revolves around animals' mating rituals, which the first dater believes will help him find his perfect match.
Liam is introduced as an animal lover, who has been studying wild courtship rituals ahead of the dinner date. As soon as he meets his new match, Kayleigh, he makes his first bizarre move.
He offers her pebbles and instructs her to choose a favourite. While it comes across as strange, the courtship ritual is actually common among Adélie penguins, but naturally, Kayleigh is less than impressed by the offer.
She quickly fires back: "I don't suppose you know any penguins that present their partners with chocolates?"
Unfazed by his partner's reaction, Liam springs into a new ritual, this time it's a bird dance. He explains the courtship tradition, saying: "Well, the blue-capped cordon-bleu bird impresses its date by bobbing, singing and tapping its feet so fast, you can't see the move"
Before Kayleigh can even respond, Fred rushes to the rescue, calling attention to a different ritual that had fallen under the radar.
"Sorry to interrupt but we've had a complaint about the smell," says the maître d, prompting Liam to reveal: "That's me, I weed on my head, like a billy goat trying to impress a nanny goat."
The dinner spirals into even more chaos as Liam admits that he also pooed in the restaurant, mimicking male hippos' unusual mating ritual. However, despite the odd date, Kayleigh is charmed by her date's effort and accepts to see him again for a second date.
Fans of Fred's First Dates antics are in for a treat with the new BBC show, which premieres tonight on CBBC. The 53-year-old has cameos in episodes three, eight and eleven, all of which feature different dating disasters.

Before Free, from her latest record, Simz told the audience: 'This next song, I wrote as a poem, and I'm so happy I made it into a song, because, it's even stuff I need to hear sometimes, you know? 'If you know it, if you like it, I would love if we can sing it together, I think it'll sound beautiful in here.' For Peace, the rapper brought out singer May, who she said she had known 'for a very long time, since we was like 14, 15', adding that they used to sit in a park in Shoreditch and write songs together, saying it was 'so special' to perform with her on the night. Obongjayar, who released his second album Paradise Now in May, brought upbeat party vibes for Lotus's Lion and Sometimes I Might Be Introvert's Point And Kill. London-born rapper Wretch 32 appeared on the balcony as Simz began the duet Blood from her latest album, making his way down to the stage, where they were joined by singer Cashh for the family argument-turned song. Before last two songs, Woman and Gorilla, she said: 'This has been so special, man, thank you guys for being here, thank you so much to Chineke! Orchestra, most importantly you guys, man, you guys, honestly. 'It's been so much fun, you've been dancing, you've been singing and really catching our vibe. 'I'm so very grateful.' This year's Meltdown, curated by Simz, has seen performances from the likes of Lola Young, The Streets and Ghetts since the 11-day festival began on June 12. Each year the event is curated by a different artist, with last year's event being planned by Chaka Khan, while other past curators include David Bowie, Grace Jones and Patti Smith. Legendary BBC presenter quietly bows out after almost 50 years of TV hosting
BBC and ITV sports presenting icon Steve Ryder gave his last broadcast on Sunday as he presented the British Touring Car Championship at Oulton Park for ITV4 Sports presenter Steve Ryder has announced his retirement from broadcasting after an impressive 48-year career. The 75-year-old covered major sporting fixtures for both the BBC and ITV over the course of his time on the air. On Sunday, the star was broadcasting from the British Touring Car Championship at Oulton Park in Cheshire when he revealed he would be hanging up his microphone. He was covering the event for ITV4 when he announced the news of his departure from the screen. A montage of clips was then shared showing drivers including Lando Norris, Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill, Jenson Button and David Coulthard all bidding farewell to the broadcaster. Over the years, he has hosted Sportsnight and Sports Personality of the Year, as well as the BBC's coverage of every Olympic Games between 1988 and 2004. He departed the BBC in 2005 and joined ITV where he presented coverage of Formula One, as well as the football and rugby World Cups. His final appearance proved to be a muted exit, but he has previously explained why he decided the time had come to quit. He told the Daily Mail: "The biggest emotion as you get into the last two minutes of something like that is, 'For God's sake, don't c**k it up.' "Because you'd be thinking about that for the next 20 years. I've probably outstayed my welcome. I've been hugely lucky with the places that the career has taken me. But it's close to 50 years now, so the cracks are showing." Steve famously used to present Match of the Day and was left miffed when he was replaced by Gary Lineker as the main host - admitting he had cut the former footballer out of his life. The beef began when Gary said in 2015 that he though the R&A as 'pompous' and accused them of feeling like 'superior beings'. This, in turn, provoked a furious reaction from Steve. He told the Golf Paper: "I hold Gary Lineker in the highest regard as a football presenter, but his reflections on his experiences as a golf presenter need a huge reality check. For four years, the R&A and most other observers knew that Gary was the wrong man in the wrong job. Hazel Irvine has just delivered once again at the Open presentation skills of the highest quality. Not many people can do that and Gary certainly came up short. "Roger Mosey, the head of sport, knew Gary was a golf fanatic and was further encouraged by Gary apparently volunteering for the Masters vacancy within a few minutes of my exit from Television Centre. "But if Mosey thought long and hard before offering Gary the golf job, it's even more baffling. Match of the Day is scripted and rehearsed. Golf presentation, especially at Augusta, is seat of the pants, unpredictable and demanding." Away from sport, Steve also won praise for being open about a battle against prostate cancer after he was diagnosed with the disease in October 2023. He underwent emergency surgery which stopped the cancer from spreading. He previously told BBC Breakfast: "They took one look and said, 'We're going to operate in two weeks'. "No messing around. We did Brands Hatch for ITV on the Sunday and I had the operation on the Thursday. So it slotted into the schedule quite nicely!"

Sting gives update as support act suffers cardiac arrest on stage in Liverpool
Sting's long-anticipated return to Liverpool took on a somber tone as he opened his headline performance at On The Waterfront by addressing a medical emergency that unfolded earlier in the day involving a member of local band The Christians. The Grammy-winning artist took the stage at Pier Head on Sunday night, closing out the four-day festival, but not before updating fans on the dramatic incident that had temporarily paused the event just hours before.
