RM100k goes missing from retired teacher's bank account
JERTIH: A retired teacher here lost RM115,003 after falling victim to a phishing scam.
Besut OCPD Supt Azamuddin Ahmad@Abu said the 56-year-old man realised that the money in his bank account had decreased when he attempted to make a withdrawal at a bank branch in Jertih on Monday (June 16) night.
"The victim was shocked to find that his account balance was only RM130,015.18, whereas the last known balance was over RM245,000.
"Upon checking his bank statement, he discovered 14 unauthorised transactions even though he claimed he had never clicked on any suspicious links or made any banking transactions," he said in a statement on Wednesday (June 18).
He added that investigations are ongoing and advised the public to never click on links received from unknown individuals and to be cautious of advertisements on social media.- Bernama

Video clip case: MACC calls in another Sabah politician
KOTA KINABALU: Another Sabah politician has been summoned by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to give a statement at the Sabah Federal Government Administrative Complex on Monday (June 23) morning. It is learnt that the state assistant minister was called in as part of the ongoing investigation into a corruption case involving a mining prospecting scandal. A source said that the politician, who is a state assemblyman and also a Member of Parliament, arrived at the MACC office at about 9am, accompanied by two lawyers. Sabah MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy declined to comment on the matter. A state-owned investment arm company chairman, who was questioned by Sabah MACC for nearly four hours on Wednesday (June 18), is expected to be charged on June 30. Also expected to be charged is a whistleblower known as "Albert", previously linked to the circulation of video clips related to the case. ALSO READ: Three likely to be charged in Sabah mining scandal Earlier, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed that an assemblyman and a businessman had been detained under Section 16(b)(A) of the MACC Act 2009. The alleged offences are believed to have occurred between 2023 and last year, involving the solicitation and receipt of bribes amounting to approximately RM200,000 in connection with the processing of mineral exploration licence applications. Both individuals have since been released on MACC bail and are expected to be charged at the end of the month.

GOF seizes Thai saplings, lorry worth RM400,000 over disease fears
RANTAU PANJANG: The General Operations Force (GOF) has seized 10,000 plant saplings and a lorry worth about RM400,000 over concerns the plants may carry harmful disease. GOF Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abd Hamid said a 34-year-old lorry driver was also arrested during the operation. A GOF team from the Ninth Battalion stopped the lorry near the Gual Tinggi health clinic around 11am, he said. "After checking the vehicle, they found 5,000 Barbados cherry saplings and 5,000 clove flower saplings inside it. "The GOF personnel believe the plants may be infested with harmful pests and disease. "They then detained the lorry driver and confiscated the plant saplings. The value of the seizure, including the lorry, is RM400,000," he added. Ros Azhan said initial investigations showed the saplings were headed to a local nursery. In a separate operation, the GOF seized various types of cosmetic products, estimated to be worth RM28,000, at an illegal jetty in Tumpat on Sunday. The suspected smugglers, however, fled to Thailand by boat upon realising the presence of the GOF team.

Seven arrested in Serdang police ops on burglars and snatch thieves
SERDANG: District police have solved a house break-in and a series of snatch thefts with the arrest of seven suspects in two separate cases. In the first case, two men with criminal records were detained over a burglary in Bandar Putra Permai here. Serdang OCPD Asst Comm Muhamad Farid Ahmad said the victim left his home at about 7am on June 7. "When he returned at 4pm the next day, he discovered his house had been broken into. "The house was in shambles and his car and valuables were missing," he told a press conference at Serdang district police headquarters on Monday (June 23). ACP Farid said the losses, including the car, two laptops, sunglasses and cash, came up to about RM42,000. "An investigation led to the arrest of two men, aged 38 and 44, in Klang on June 18. "We recovered the stolen items as well," he said, adding that the suspects had been remanded until today and police would apply for an extension. In the second case, ACP Farid said a snatch theft gang consisting of three men and two women, believed to be responsible for 39 cases in Selangor, was busted in an operation codenamed Ops Sentap Jay. "The suspects aged 20 to 30 were detained on June 19. "We believe they are responsible for cases in Serdang, Kajang and Subang Jaya," he said. Several items were seized, including a motorcycle, helmets, a laptop, a pawn shop receipt and jewellery, he added.
