Hiroshy Wong chips in as Indiana State recruit Owen Roberts does it all for Waubonsie Valley. ‘Anything to help.'
Welcome to the club, dude.
That's what Waubonsie Valley's Hiroshy Wong, approached Thursday by a reporter for a postgame interview, seemed to be thinking as he flashed a knowing smile when the first question focused on the performance of Indiana State-bound pitcher Owen Roberts.
Of course it was.
Wong, a senior third baseman and the team's leading hitter Thursday, was once again up close to to witness another standout performance by the senior ace and hard-throwing right-hander.
'He's very confident in the first place,' said Wong, who was brought up to the varsity for the final four games of his freshman season and has started since his sophomore year. 'He knows what he has to do and he also knows, as a defense, we're going to make plays for him to make it easy.
'Owen is always very good. He's always throwing strikes and trying to get the quick innings.'
That held true again Thursday night as 10th seeded Waubonsie Valley cruised to a 4-1 upset of the second-seeded hosts Porters in a Class 4A Lockport Sectional semifinal at Ed Flink Field.
The pitching and hitting of Roberts led the way for the Warriors (22-12), who advanced to play at 11 a.m. Saturday against Downers Grove North (30-7) in a rematch of last year's sectional final, won 3-2 by the Trojans on a walk-off home run in the seventh.
Roberts, meanwhile, carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and handcuffed the Porters (24-14) on two hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. He hit one batter.
'We give him the ball at the beginning and tell him we'll get it back at the end of the game,' Waubonsie coach Bryan Acevedo said. 'That's what he's done for two years now.
'He's been really special for us. Any time he's on the mound, we've got an opportunity to win.'
Roberts (8-2), who went 10-0 last season, also is the team's No. 2 hitter. He drew a walk and singled and scored twice as the Warriors took a 3-0 lead after three innings.
Wong, who bats third and leads the team with a .390 average, was in the thick of those rallies, advancing Roberts with two of his three singles.
In the seventh, Roberts gave himself some insurance with his second home run of the season, clearing the left field fence and doinking the ball off the scoreboard beyond it.
'That felt good to get it over the fence,' Roberts said. 'We came out a little slow this season, but we're starting to find our identity. Our pitching has been great all year.
'We're scrapping a few runs together and the defense has been amazing.'
That was evident from the start, when junior left fielder Aidan Kornak ranged far to his right and made a sliding catch on the first Lockport hitter.
Wong went far to his left, charging a slow grounder past the mound in the sixth and throwing the batter out, ending up on the right side of the infield.
'I have pretty good range,' Wong said. 'I've actually been moving around. I play second and third base and also play in the outfield, too. Anything to help my team.
'I'm mainly a utility guy. I play everything.'
He also upped his career hit total to 125, five short of the program record of 130 held by former major leaguer Michael Bowden.
Lockport coach Scott Malinowski said Roberts, who needed only 90 pitches, was as good as his team has seen.
'He throws hard, but what separates him from most hard throwers at this level is he fills up the strike zone,' Mallinowski said. 'There were a lot of short at-bats and short innings. It's why he was easily able to go a complete game.'
On top of that, Acevedo pointed out that the Warriors have come around, going 9-1 in their last 10 games after being 13-11 when seeding took place.
'All the pressure has been on the other teams since we're the 10th seed,' Wong said. 'We were looking forward to getting a rematch with Downers Grove. We're playing good baseball now.
'We just started doing all the little things right and aren't making those little mistakes.'

No Origin stars, no worries; Panthers in boilover win
An undermanned Penrith have secured a critical 28-18 victory over the high-flying Warriors despite missing their swag of State of Origin stars. The Panthers arrived in Auckland without five stars including Nathan Cleary and Isaah Yeo due to the travel factor from Origin II in Perth to New Zealand. But the rookie outfit shocked the third-ranked hosts in their Saturday clash to bank a third straight win and continue their climb up the NRL ladder. Depending on results the defending premiers could finish inside the top eight at the end of the round for the first time since Las Vegas in the opening round. Winning seven of their past eight matches, the Warriors were expected to outclass Penrith but the Panthers' young halves Blaize Talagi and Brad Schneider stood up to steer the visitors home. Talagi won't be stopped 🔥 #NRLWarriorsPanthers Telstra Moment of the Match. — NRL (@NRL) June 21, 2025 With Moses Leota leading the way up front with 147 run metres, second rower Scott Sorensen also stood tall, scoring two of their five tries. The Warriors weren't helped by losing Marata Niukore to a head knock 10 minutes into the match and then winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, who appeared to suffer a serious ankle injury. Sorensen went on report for the tackle that ended Watene-Zelezniak's night. Trailing 6-8 at halftime, the Warriors' hopes of a big finish were also hobbled as halfback Luke Metcalf struggled with a quad injury. The Panthers started with a bang with Sorensen held up over the line early but they made no mistake in the 16th minute when centre Casey McLean found winger Tom Jenkins, who bagged a hat-trick last week. In a pulsating contest the Warriors soon levelled with a ball bouncing up for Jackson Ford after Leka Halasima skittled Penrith players leaping for a Metcalf bomb. Sorensen again put his team ahead, scoring his first try with three minutes remaining in the half. The Warriors edged ahead soon after the break through Jacob Laban but the full house at Go Media Stadium had little to cheer about until a 78th minute consolation try by Moala Graham-Taufa. In the meantime, the Panthers piled on a further three tries, with Talagi and winger Paul Alamoti getting in on the action, to seal the win.

Three-Team NBA Trade Idea Gives Warriors' Steph Curry, Jimmy Butler Three New Teammates
Three-Team NBA Trade Idea Gives Warriors' Steph Curry, Jimmy Butler Three New Teammates originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Golden State Warriors lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round of the 2025 NBA playoffs in five games. Advertisement Warriors superstar point guard Steph Curry suffered a Grade 1 left hamstring strain in Game 1 and missed the rest of the series. The Warriors, who won Game 1, lost four consecutive games without Curry. Golden State made a blockbuster trade in February, acquiring All-Star small forward Jimmy Butler from the Miami Heat. Now, one NBA analyst has proposed that the Warriors make another big trade this offseason. Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report came up with the following trade idea involving the Warriors, Chicago Bulls and Charlotte Hornets: Bulls get: Jonathan Kuminga. Warriors get: Lonzo Ball, Jalen Smith, Josh Okogie, 2026 Portland Trail Blazers protected first-rounder (from Bulls), 2029 second-rounder (from Hornets), 2029 Denver Nuggets second-rounder (from Hornets), 2031 second-rounder (from Hornets), 2031 Phoenix Suns second-rounder (from Hornets). Advertisement Hornets get: Moses Moody, Jevon Carter. Kuminga becomes a restricted free agent this offseason. The small forward and the Warriors are expected to explore sign-and-trade scenarios once the 2025 NBA Finals end. This NBA trade idea gives Golden State Warriors stars Steph Curry and Jimmy Butler three new teammates. Troy Taormina-Imagn Images "The trade needs to wait until July 6, when Kuminga can sign a contract, starting at $30.4 million," Pincus wrote. "Charlotte uses its non-taxpayer mid-level exception to take in Carter, leaving a $7.3 million balance and triggering a first-apron hard cap. "The Bulls also gain a first-apron hard cap by taking in a player via sign-and-trade. The Warriors are hard-capped at the second apron by bringing back players for Kuminga in the sign-and-trade and using aggregation. The Trail Blazers' first is lottery-protected." Advertisement This trade idea would send Ball, Smith and Okogie to the Warriors, who have won four championships in the Curry-Draymond Green era. Ball averaged 7.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists for the Bulls this season, Smith averaged 8.2 points and 5.6 rebounds for the Bulls, and Okogie averaged 7.1 points and 2.8 rebounds for the Phoenix Suns and Hornets.
