Plea seeks nod to offer Eid prayers at August Kranti Maidan; HC asks Maharashtra govt to decide

Gopalani had moved the HC after the Gamdevi police station refused permission for the mass namaz. The festival is likely to be celebrated on June 6-7.
A vacation bench of Justices Neela Gokhale and Manjusha Deshpande asked a social worker, Umer Abdul Jabbar Gopalani, to approach the government's social and cultural affairs department to seek permission to hold mass prayers at the ground.
Mumbai, Jun 6 (PTI) The Bombay High Court on Friday asked the Maharashtra government to decide, preferably during the day itself, a representation seeking permission to perform namaz during Bakri Eid at the August Kranti Maidan in south Mumbai.
While refusing permission, the police had reasoned that traffic issues and a possible 'law and order' situation might arise due to the use of the public ground for such a religious purpose.
The plea claimed that the local Muslim community has been using the ground to perform mass namaz during Eid for the last 50 years, and there has never been any law and order situation or traffic problem.
The bench referred to an order passed by the HC in 2006, which said that permission for the use of the August Kranti Maidan can be given only by the Secretary of Maharashtra's Cultural Affairs and Social Justice Department, as the ground is a 'protected monument'.
August Kranti Maidan is the place where Mahatma Gandhi had launched the Quit India Movement in 1942.
The court asked the petitioner to make a representation to the authority and said the same shall be decided, preferably by Friday itself. PTI SP NR

Omar Abdullah sharply reacts to Trump-Munir White House lunch: ‘They do not care for any other country'

Upset with US President Donald Trump hosting Pakistan Army chief Asif Munir for a White House lunch, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday said that Washington can do anything to secure its interests and the US was a "friend" of other countries only till its benefits were served, reported PTI. Speaking to reporters at the Srinagar Railway station, Omar Abdullah said, as quoted by PTI, 'The US President is a master of his own will. Can we tell him whom he should invite for meals and whom not? It is a separate issue that we used to think the US President was our very special friend, and he would respect our friendship. But obviously, America does what benefits it. They do not care for any other country.' The chief minister and his father, Farooq Abdullah, travelled to Jammu on the recently launched Vande Bharat train. On his train journey, he said, "Had it not been good, why would I have returned via train by train. The manner in which the people are trying to book trains for this train, and that the process of waiting list has started, we want the length (capacity) and the frequency of the train to be increased." He added, "It has become a successful service in just a few days; we would want more people to benefit from it." Commenting on the Iran-Israel conflict, Omar Abdullah said the war should stop and the issue resolved through dialogue. "This bombing should not have started. Before this, when the American intelligence in-charge was asked if Iran had the nuclear bomb, he had said he did not think Iran could make a bomb for a long time. But Israel attacked Iran within a few months. This attack should stop and the issues resolved through talks," he said. When asked about the local students studying in Iran, he said, "We cannot bring them back overnight, as airports and ports are closed. We are bringing them via road first to those cities where there is no bombing, then they are being brought back through Armenia. We are hopeful that today, 300-400 students are returning, a majority of whom are from J-K. We will bring them home safely." Abdullah said the LG should approve the business rules that have been approved by the cabinet to end the confusion. "I have never said LG has all the powers. You check the J-K Reservation Act. The LG has himself said that his responsibility is limited to only the security and law and order. That is why I am saying that the business rules approved by the cabinet should be signed and returned by the LG so that there is no confusion," he said. "The LG has one responsibility: He should protect the people of J-K and improve the security scenario here … Rest of the responsibilities are ours," the CM added.

Sun TV Network Defends Promoter Kalanithi, Says All Legal Obligations Met

Agency: PTI Last Updated: Sun TV Network in a regulatory filing says the agreements between the two brothers had been "duly vetted" by "intermediaries" concerned before the company's public issue. A day after reports emerged of former Union minister Dayanidhi Maran accusing his brother of 'fraudulent practices" and 'misgovernance", the elder sibling Kalanithi-run Sun TV on Friday said the division between the promoter family done 22 years back was in compliance with all legal obligations. Defending its promoter Kalanithi, Sun TV Network in a regulatory filing said the agreements between the two brothers had been 'duly vetted" by 'intermediaries" concerned before the company's public issue. According to reports, Dayanidhi has sent a legal notice to his brother and several others, accusing them of 'fraudulent practices" and 'misgovernance" in taking control of Sun TV after their father Murasoli Maran's death in 2003. Dayanidhi, who is also a Lok Sabha member from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), has sought to restore the company's shareholding structure to its pre-September 2003 status. The board of Sun TV Network is led by Kalanithi as Executive Director and Chairperson. His daughter Kavya Kalanithi Maran is also on the south-based broadcaster board. Kalanithi, as a promoter, owns 75 per cent shareholding in Sun TV Network. On Friday, Sun TV Network, in its regulatory filing said, 'The alleged matter dates back to 22 years when the company was a closely held private limited company." Defending the promoter, it further stated, 'Statements allegedly made in the articles are incorrect, misleading, speculating, defamatory and not supported by facts or law". 'We wish to inform that all acts have been done in accordance with legal obligations and the same had been duly vetted by concerned intermediaries before the public issue of the company," it said. Moreover, Sun TV Network also said the media reports claiming a rift between the promoter Maran brothers 'does not have any bearing on the business of the company or its day-to-day functioning". Sun TV Network also clarified that it is a 'family matter of the promoter" and is 'purely personal in nature". Besides Kalanithi, financial institutions, including mutual funds and insurance companies, own 10.46 per cent of the shareholding of Sun TV and 6.87 per cent by the foreign portfolio investors. Chennai-based Sun TV Network is among India's leading media conglomerates, having 37 television channels in seven languages, with a reach of more than 140 million households in India.
