Air India plane crash: Surat grandfather buries son, daughter-in-law; heads back to Ahmedabad to collect 4-year-old granddaughter's body

It was an unusual early morning for the people of Haripura in the walled city area of Surat on Wednesday when a large number of Muslims gathered to offer 'Namaz-e-Janaza' prayers for British citizens Akeel Nanabawa and his wife Hannaa Vorajee, who were among the 241 killed in the Air India flight crash on June 12. The Gloucester couple was buried around 2 am Wednesday, after which their relatives returned to Ahmedabad to collect the remains of Sara, their four-year-old daughter. Akeel (36), his wife Hannaa (31), and daughter Sara had flown from London to Ahmedabad and reached Surat on June 6, a day before Bakri Eid, to surprise Akeel's father Abdulla Nanabawa, a resident of the Haripura area. A huge crowd of mourners — clerics, social workers, relatives, friends and members of the Bohra community — from different parts of Surat city assembled at Haripura on Wednesday early morning to pay their last respects. Akeel's younger brother, Hamza, and their mother, Sajeda, also flew to Surat from London to participate in the final rites. Abdulla (62) had been in Ahmedabad since June 12 to receive the bodies of his son Akeel and his family. On June 16, the DNA test results for Akeel and Hanna were confirmed, while Sara's DNA test report arrived early on Wednesday morning. Abdulla was inconsolable as his friend Rashid Shaikh, a social worker, and a few others tried to speak to him. Talking to The Indian Express, Abdulla Nanabawa said, 'There are no words to express my feelings about my son and his family. We all enjoyed the Bakri Eid festival fully. We celebrated it with all the rituals. I dropped him at Ahmedabad on June 12 for his return flight back to London. His trip was short, but his company was memorable to me and will remain so forever.' On the early morning of June 12, Abdulla Nanabawa booked a car from Surat to Ahmedabad, carrying Akeel, Hannaa, and Sara. After dropping them at the Sardar Vallabhbhai International Airport (SVPIA), Abdulla headed to Surat, where he learnt of the plane crash. When Akeel and Hannaa were being laid to rest, Abdulla received a call from Ahmedabad Civil Hospital informing him that Sara's DNA had been matched. He and his friends left for Ahmedabad Civil Hospital at 7.00 am on Wednesday and received Sara's body; they are now on their way back to Surat.

Five arrested in Assam's Goalpara for allegedly throwing beef near temple, says CM

The Assam Police have arrested five persons for allegedly throwing beef near a temple in Goalpara in a 'deliberate attempt to incite communal tension', Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday. In a post on X, the Bharatiya Janata Party leader said that Bodir Ali, Hazarat Ali, Tara Mia, Shajamal Mia and Jahangir Alom, all residents of Lakhipur, were arrested for attempting to incite tensions after the Muslim festival of Eid-ul-Zuha. 'A case has been registered and strict action is being taken to ensure all such elements face the full force of the law,' Sarma said. This comes after at least 60 persons were arrested over the course of a week in connection with communal tensions that broke out in Dhubri on June 8. The tensions had erupted after the remains of an animal were discovered near a temple. On June 13, the state government issued nighttime shoot-at-sight orders in Dhubri to bring the situation under control. Sarma had claimed that the animal remains found near the temple on June 8 were part of the head of a cow. The chief minister claimed that the next day, another severed animal head was found in front of the temple premises, which sparked violence. Widespread protests had broken out in Dhubri on June 8 morning, with a large number of residents blocking a road adjacent to the temple. They shouted slogans and burnt tyres as part of their demonstration. Deputy Commissioner Dibakar Nath issued orders prohibiting five or more persons from gathering in Dhubri town. The administration had also banned rallies, processions, meetings and demonstrations. The situation was brought under control by June 10 and the prohibitory orders were withdrawn. On Friday, the chief minister had also claimed that a day before Bakri Eid, which was celebrated on June 7, a poster showing Dhubri to be part of Bangladesh was found in the town. Sarma alleged that a group was attempting to spread tensions in the area.

Assam: 38 more arrested after communal violence in Dhubri

Thirty-eight more persons were arrested overnight in connection with communal tensions that broke out in Assam's Dhubri town on June 8, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday. The tensions had erupted after the remains of an animal were discovered near a Hindu temple. The arrested individuals have been booked under non-bailable offences, India Today NE reported on Saturday. The arrests were in addition to the 22 persons the police on Friday confirmed to have held. Sarma had told reporters on Friday that he visited the area to review the situation and had issued shoot-at-sight orders for nighttime. 'Whoever will create disturbance, we will shoot them,' he had said, adding that the Rapid Action Force and the Central Reserve Police Force had been deployed in Dhubri. The chief minister also claimed that the animal remains found near the temple were part of the head of a cow. 'The day after Bakri Eid [on June 8], some persons kept a severed cow head in front of a Hanuman temple,' claimed Sarma. 'Representatives of both the communities met thereafter, a peace committee meeting was held and the conflict seemed to have been resolved.' The chief minister claimed that the next day, another severed animal head was found in front of the temple premises, which sparked violence. Widespread protests broke out in Dhubri on June 8 morning, with a large number of residents blocking a road adjacent to the temple. They shouted slogans and burnt tyres as part of their demonstration. They also prevented the police from removing the remains of the animal, insisting that it must remain untouched until 'those responsible are identified and arrested'. As the demonstrations continued till Monday, Deputy Commissioner Dibakar Nath issued orders prohibiting five or more persons from gathering in Dhubri town. The administration had also banned rallies, processions, meetings and demonstrations. The situation was brought under control by Tuesday and the prohibitory orders were withdrawn. On Friday, the chief minister claimed that a day before Bakri Eid, which was celebrated on June 7, a poster showing Dhubri to be part of Bangladesh was found in the town. Sarma alleged that a group was attempting to spread tensions in the area. Dhubri shares a border with Bangladesh. The Bharatiya Janata Party leader had said on June 8 that 16 persons were arrested in the state for allegedly slaughtering cattle illegally on Bakri Eid.

Back on duty after Eid break, Pune crew member killed in Air India flight crash in Ahmedabad

Pune: It was just his third day on duty after a short three-day break to celebrate Bakri Eid with his family when 22-year-old Irfan Shaikh lost his life in one of the deadliest air crashes in India's aviation history on Thursday. Irfan, one of the 12 crew members on board the ill-fated Air India flight, AI171 Boeing 787 Dreamliner, was a resident of Sant Tukaram Nagar at Pimpri Chinchwad in Pune. His family — his father Samir, mother, and elder brother Amir — rushed to Ahmedabad soon after they received the heart-wrehcning news of the crash. Amir, an IT professional, told TOI on Friday over the phone from Ahmedabad that they are waiting to take custody of Irfan's body at a hotel, where the airline had arranged accommodation for the bereaved relatives. Irfan joined Air Vistara around two years ago after completing a diploma course with a private institute in Pune. He lived in Mumbai in a rented flat alone while his family were in Pune. "For nearly 1.5 years, he worked with domestic flights. But after the airline's merger with Air India six months ago, the company started assigning him duty on international aircraft as well," said Samir's cousin Firoz Shaikh, who lives in Pimpri Chinchwad. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Firoz further said Irfan would ring up his mother before he boarded or deboarded a flight every time. "Hence, she was aware that he was on the flight that crashed on Thursday. However, we were still hoping that he might survive, but that did not happen. The entire family is now in a state of shock." Azhar Khan, a relative from Yerawada, recalled Irfan's visit to their home on Sunday (June 8) for a Bakri Eid celebration. "I had invited Irfan and his entire family for dinner. He was very happy as it was his first job as a crew member with an airline and a dream come true," he said, adding that Irfan long aspired to work in the aviation industry and was an inspiration to his own son who also wants to pursue such a career. On Friday, Irfan's father Samir told the media in Ahmedabad that an airline official informed them that their son's face was identifiable, but govt officials were still making them wait and go through a DNA test to hand over the body. "This process will take around 48-72 hours." Irfan landed in Ahmedabad on Wednesday and it was their layover before taking off to London the next day, Samir further said. "Irfan would never forget to inform us before take-off and after landing. That was his routine." Firoz said his nephew Irfan always respected everyone. "Whenever he came on holiday, he never missed visiting our house." According to the family members, Irfan's grandfather shifted to Pimpri Chinchwad from Satara district when he was young and settled here. Samir, who earlier worked in a private firm, runs a food outlet (paratha house) near their home in Pimpri. Irfan completed his SSC (standard X) from D Y Patil School and standard XI and XII from Jai Hind School in Pimpri.
