The byelections are to fill vacant seats in the legislature, specifically those for Edmonton-Strathcona, Edmonton-Ellerslie, and Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills.

Candidate nominations for the races are open until 2 p.m. on June 5, though many candidates have already been selected.

Edmonton-Strathcona has been vacant since Rachel Notley stepped down effective Dec. 30, a period of nearly five months, just one shy of the legislated time limit.

The riding has had an NDP representative since 1997 and was also the riding of former NDP leader Raj Pannu.

The seat for Edmonton-Ellerslie was vacated by the NDP's Rod Loyola, who left to run in last month's federal election after winning three consecutive elections in the constituency.

Gurtej Singh Brar is seeking to retain the seat for the NDP and will be most immediately challenged by the UCP's Naresh Bhadwaj, who represented the riding for the former Progressive Conservative Party after winning in the same riding in both 2008 and 2012.

Ellerslie is also home to one of two separatist candidates running with the Republican Party of Alberta's Fred Munn, also seeking the seat.

The riding has been represented by three different parties since it was first contested in 1993.

The seat for Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills had been occupied since 2015 by MLA Nathan Cooper, who is set to depart the province to represent Alberta in Washington.

Premier Danielle Smith used a clause in the UCP's constitution to forego an open nomination race and selected Alberta Grains chairperson Tara Sawyer as the party's candidate.

The separatist Republican Party's leader Cameron Davies is also set to contest the race, which has been won by candidates for conservative-leaning parties since it was created in 1997.

The NDP nomination process for the race is ongoing, and a candidate is expected to be announced later this week.

There are currently 46 United Conservative MLAs, 36 with the NDP, two independent members, along with the three vacant seats to be decided next month.

Canada signs new security and defence partnership with Europe
BRUSSELS - Canada and the European Union opened a new era of transatlantic co-operation Monday with the official signing of a security and defence partnership at a joint summit in Brussels. The agreement commits Canada and Europe to collaboration on defence and is a step toward Canada participating in the continent's massive new defence procurement program, known as ReArm Europe. Prime Minister Mark Carney, who travelled to Brussels for the Canada-EU Summit, is pursuing more options for defence procurement as Canada seeks to reduce its reliance on the United States. Carney met with European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at the summit, before the final deal was signed. Costa said Canada and the EU are 'looking at the world through the same lens' and this meeting has taken the partnership to a new level. Von der Leyen told Carney he was 'here among friends.' She said Canada and the EU are two strong democracies bound by historic ties and connected by a 'dynamic, fair and open' trade partnership. She said the EU wants not just to reaffirm the friendship and partnership with Canada but also to reshape it. She said the agreement is the 'most comprehensive' ever completed. 'We know we can count on you and you can count on us,' she said. Carney said the leaders are putting into practice some of what they discussed at the G7 and have been working on for years. Carney said the deal is crucial for Canada and 'shows a way forward.' Under the terms of the agreement, Canada and the EU will hold an annual 'security and defence dialogue' involving top officials. The agreement also commits both partners to expanding co-operation in support of Ukraine, improving Canadian military mobility in Europe and enhancing maritime co-operation in regions of 'mutual interest' like the Indo-Pacific. Canada will need to sign a second agreement with the European Commission before it can take part in the 150-billion-euro ReArm Europe initiative. The security and defence agreement also pledges further collaboration on emerging issues in cybersecurity, foreign interference, disinformation and outer space policy. Carney also met with Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever ahead of the Canada-EU Summit. De Wever said that Canada's partnership with the EU is vital now because 'we've woken up in a world that doesn't look that friendly anymore.' A government official briefing reporters on the trip said the partnership is expected to make procurement easier and more affordable, while also allowing Canada to diversify its sources of equipment. On Tuesday, Carney travels to The Hague for the NATO summit, where member nations will decide whether to fully endorse a substantial increase in the defence spending target, from two per cent of GDP to five per cent. Carney said earlier this month Canada would increase its defence spending this year to meet the two per cent target for the first time since it was established in 2014. By Catherine Morrison.

Canada starts busing citizens out of Israel days after allies began

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand says bus services started this morning from Tel Aviv and the West Bank to Jordan. She says bus routes also started yesterday to take Canadians who fled Iran for Turkey to locations where they can secure transport out of the region. Last Thursday, Anand announced that Canadian consular officials would be standing by at border crossings to help citizens who fled Israel or Iran to reach Canada through commercial means. Countries like France and Australia have been evacuating citizens by bus, while some have managed to flee Israel by ship. The airspace has been largely closed over both countries and other parts of the Middle East as Israel and Iran exchange missiles. Ottawa has come in for criticism over its arrangements for Canadians looking to escape the region and federal officials are set to brief media on the situation this afternoon. By Dylan Robertson.

Union Calls for Mediator and Offers Media Blackout While Canadian Hearing Services Still Refuses to Bargain
Article content TORONTO — No interpreters, no mental health counsellors, no access to hearing aids, and no bargaining for more than a month: that's the situation as a strike at Canadian Hearing Services (CHS) grinds into its ninth week. Article content CHS and CUPE 2073 – representing more than 200 workers who support deaf, deafblind, and hard of hearing Ontarians – last met on May 21. CHS left bargaining without tabling an offer, considering workers' proposals, or offering more dates to negotiate. They made clear that they'd only return to the table, if workers agreed to a media blackout, among other demands. Article content In the intervening weeks, political and community pressure has mounted on CHS with several ONDP MPPs voicing concern and deaf and hard of hearing organizations pointing to the impact on their communities. CHS, meanwhile, still refused to bargain. Article content In the interest of resolving a strike that's actively harming deaf Ontarians, CUPE 2073 made their greatest overture to CHS in offering a media blackout. In a letter delivered to CHS' lawyers on June 17, CUPE mapped a path toward a freely negotiated settlement, with both parties jointly paying for an external mediator for a block of days and a media blackout for the duration. Article content CHS did not respond to the letter. Article content 'If CHS wanted to end this strike, if they wanted us back at work restoring services to deaf Ontarians, they'd be at the table. We've tried everything to get back to negotiations because we know how much pain this disruption is causing. CHS hasn't shown any urgency and it's impossible to interpret that as anything other than a lack of consideration for the challenges deaf people face,' said Mara Waern, president of CUPE 2073 and an employment consultant with more than three decade's experience at CHS. 'The community wants an end to this strike. Workers want an end. The only party that's refusing is CHS.' The last strike took place in 2017 and was only settled after 10 weeks through the involvement of a third-party mediator.
