TMC slams Oppn after HC stays relief scheme for sacked non-teaching staff

The TMC on Friday reiterated its respect for the judiciary but strongly criticised opposition parties for allegedly "denying humanitarian relief" to thousands of non-teaching staff who lost their jobs after the Supreme Court quashed the 2016 recruitment process, calling the move by the opposition parties inhumane.
The remarks came immediately after the Calcutta High Court restrained the West Bengal government from implementing a scheme that sought to provide monetary support to sacked Group C and D staff until September 26 or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
Justice Amrita Sinha passed the interim order on petitions challenging the state's proposal to pay Rs 25,000 to each affected Group C employee and Rs 20,000 to each Group D staff member.
The court had reserved its verdict on June 9.
The state government has been asked to file its affidavit in opposition within four weeks, and the petitioners have been given a further two weeks to respond.
Responding to the court's order, TMC spokesperson and senior leader Kunal Ghosh alleged that certain political elements were "deriving monstrous glee" from the misfortune of those who lost their livelihoods.
"Following the SC directive, over 26,000 people lost their jobs, bringing monstrous glee to some. It was our compassionate Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who stood by the affected," Ghosh said.
He noted that while a review petition is currently underway in the Supreme Court, a new recruitment process has also been initiated in compliance with the apex court's judgment.
"In SC's respect, a recruitment process was also initiated. Additionally, relief was arranged on humanitarian grounds by the CM for Group C and Group D employees who lost their livelihood. There was opposition to that, and Calcutta HC Justice Amrita Sinha issued a stay on that as well," Ghosh added.
"We will follow a legal recourse, but we will also identify who moves courts and get these inhumane orders," he said, launching a veiled attack on opposition leaders who have publicly supported the legal challenges to the scheme.
The West Bengal government had earlier launched the scheme to provide "limited livelihood, support and social security on humanitarian grounds" on a temporary basis, and made it subject to the orders of any competent court.
The initiative came after nearly 26,000 teaching and non-teaching staff in government-aided and -sponsored schools were dismissed following a Supreme Court judgment that held the 2016 recruitment process conducted by the West Bengal School Service Commission to be tainted.
The ruling TMC had defended the relief package as a stop-gap measure to support distressed families until fresh appointments could be made.

"I announced a hike in the social security pension to Rs 1,500 at a press conference on Dec 6 last year. Now the NDA govt has been compelled to follow suit." The JD(U) defended the move as a continuation of the govt's development agenda. "This hike reflects Nitish Kumar's commitment to 'development with justice'," a party spokesperson said, advising Tejashwi to focus on serving the poor rather than criticising the govt. Deputy CM Samrat Chaudhary hailed the decision as historic and thanked the CM for addressing the needs of vulnerable people.

CBI Finds Losses Over Rs 4,200 Crore In JNPA Dredging Project Corruption Case

New Delhi: Financial losses of over Rs 4,200 crore have been flagged by the CBI in a corruption case linked to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority dredging project, NDTV Profit reported. The case has exposed deep-rooted corruption, inflated costs, and rigged contracts. A huge network of criminal conspiracy involved manipulated tenders, suppressed competition, and collusion between officials and private firms. The investigation centred around senior officials of JNPA and executives from Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE). It found a pattern of systemic irregularities and abuse of authority. The CBI's complaint highlighted two main instances of over-dredging that led to wrongful losses of Rs 365.90 crore in Phase-I and Rs 438 crore in Phase-II. These figures are presented as key findings that initially surfaced during the enquiry. However, the investigation goes much deeper. The CBI document explicitly notes that these losses are part of a broader web of financial misconduct and criminal conspiracy, which includes inflated estimates, tender manipulation, and rigged bidding processes. Some of the most serious findings were: Rs 1,163 crore was added to the project cost due to the choice of a deeper 15-meter vessel draft (Option II) over the originally proposed 14-meter draft (Option I), without reassessment or justification. A Rs 557 crore loss resulted from the adoption of composite dredging rates for hard and weathered rock, along with unnecessary pretreatment costs, instead of using differential rates. The violation of PIANC (Permanent International Association of Navigation Congresses) guidelines led to Rs 964 crore in losses due to unauthorized channel widening in both phases. An additional Rs 430 crore was paid for over-dredging during Phase-II, despite no supporting evidence of required depth. Sources told NDTV Profit that CBI officials said all accused, including former JNPA Chief Manager Sunil Kumar Madabhavi and Devdutt Bose of TCE, will be summoned for questioning. "The investigation is ongoing, with further financial and criminal liabilities likely to emerge," a source added.

BJP worker found dead in Bengal's Hooghly, party alleges ‘political murder'

A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker, Sheikh Bakibulla, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in his house at Goghat in Hooghly district in West Bengal on Saturday (June 21, 2025). Mr. Bakibulla was reportedly found hanging in his house this morning. The BJP has alleged that it was a 'political murder'. The police sent the body for post-mortem on Saturday and initiated an investigation. 'In this specific case at the Goghat police station, a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against unknown persons under section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (murder). After the post-mortem examination, the surgeon verbally opined that the death was due to hanging,' a high-ranking official of the West Bengal Police told The Hindu. The father of the deceased, Sheikh Abdullah, told reporters that Mr. Bakibullah was an activist of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) before he joined the BJP. 'Out of pain and misery, he joined the BJP. When he was in the CPI(M), the Trinamool (ruling Trinamool Congress) was after his life. They had assaulted him multiple times in the past,' Mr. Abdullah said on Saturday after his son's body was discovered. Mr. Bakibulla's bereaved widow said that her husband had gone to bed along with her the previous night, and that she was unaware of anything unusual happening until morning. 'His hands were tied, and there was blood at the spot. It is clear that this is a murder. We have a clear demand for the police administration — immediately send the body for post-mortem and find out who did it. This cannot be covered up,' Biman Ghosh, the BJP MLA of Hooghly's Pursurah, said. The saffron party also took to X to accuse 'TMC-backed goons' of being behind Mr. Bakibullah's death.
